Previous Homeland thread - new thread for the sake of inter-episode tidiness.

I'd forgotten Javadi killed his wife too Shock. What is Dar's ethnicity meant to be?

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 28/03/2017 21:07

I find myself a bit disappointed with this season, the Berlin season wasn't all that great either.

I think Dar is Egyptian or maybe Syrian

Hassled · 28/03/2017 21:16

Can someone who can hold a thought (so not me) try and remember "The homeland data centre" if/when there's a need for a new thread?

The Redditers were pondering Ming's heritage here and eventually there is some sort of consensus that it's a Pakistani name of Kashmiri origin. Although it could also be Egyptian or Hungarian. But he'll always just be Salieri to me.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel

What's to be disappointed?
There have been explosions, police stand-offs, sieges, children, betrayals, secret trips, sex, drunkenness, sockpuppets, trolls, angry broadcasters, Mossad, Iranians, crying, anger, despair.

Only the Russians seen to be having a minor role, but after season 5 they can't be blamed for everything. Maybe the chief of staff will be found out to have had secret meetings with them, though. Wink

LurkingHusband · 28/03/2017 22:08

Only the Russians seen to be having a minor role

There's always The Americans S5 ...

ZilphasHatpin · 28/03/2017 22:10

Who had sex?? What did I miss?

Lweji · 28/03/2017 22:12

Well, not sex according to Bill Clinton...
First episode, Quinn.

ZilphasHatpin · 28/03/2017 22:30

Oh yeah! I had forgotten about that! Grin at bill C ref!

Lweji · 28/03/2017 22:36

Forgot torture and deaths, near deaths, hospitals, police car chases, houses by lakes, robberies.

Clearly most of them could do with getting laid, though. Particularly Shouty Radio Man.

IhatchedaSnorlax · 28/03/2017 23:03

Is The Americans back on TV Lurking? That's a fab show!

Bob19701 · 28/03/2017 23:12

This season has been a good one better than Berlin and thank goodness for this thread to keep up with the goings on.. but please no spinoff without Carrie (something for the Dads) 🙏

LurkingHusband · 29/03/2017 08:34

Is The Americans back on TV Lurking?

Yes S5 set in 1984 ... (don't know when UK terrestrial air dates are, I'm afraid) ....

I17neednumbers · 29/03/2017 21:08

Just rewatched (of course). Yes, Dar guesses because PE goes from being very serious and concerned and stony at first meeting with him, to chatty and joky at the second - it was too obvious a shift. She should still have stayed stony faced in the second meeting.

Question: does Dar love Peter? I really believed him in that scene, but then why would Dar have told woolly hat that Peter was just in Dar's house?

ZilphasHatpin · 29/03/2017 21:25

I dont think dar loves peter at all. I think it's all a play to manipulate him. I don't think dar loves anyone.

I17neednumbers · 29/03/2017 21:36

Oh no, I was completely taken in! But only for a short time.

I do believe Dar didn't order woolly hat to kill Peter though. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean he loves him. Maybe he "quite likes" him? He did genuinely seem upset in Berlin when they found Peter after the sarin attack and it looked as though he (Peter) was going to the great intelligence agency in the sky.

Fiderer · 30/03/2017 07:23

the great intelligence agency in the sky sounds like what I imagine MNHQ to be.

Dar means house in Arabic, so it would be a bloody bizarre name to choose for an Egyptian boy!

Trollspoopglitter · 30/03/2017 21:14

And, as there aren't always direct spelling translations between Arabic and Roman alphabets... Some theorise Adal... As it Dar Adal is Arabic for House of Justice

Wiki:
Adl (Arabic: عدل‎‎, ʻAdl) is an Arabic word meaning 'justice'. Also, one of the names of God in Islam.

Adel, and Adeel are male names derived from Adl and are common throughout the Muslim worlds and Arab.

Trollspoopglitter · 30/03/2017 21:17

I think Dar does have feelings for Peter and that's why he fell for such an old trick - the look of disguist on wooly man's face and Dar's DOH! face when he realised Peter just played him so he'd fuck up and call on an open phone line.

SoulAccount · 30/03/2017 22:19

I feel I know this, but I have forgotten. How did Quinn know that Dar is involved with woolly hat?

ZilphasHatpin · 30/03/2017 22:29

I think because Dar arranged for Quinn and Astrid to go into hiding in the lake house so it makes sense to Quinn that the only way an assassin (which dar happens to specialise in) would know where they were would be because dar told him.

Fiderer · 01/04/2017 09:17

But if Dar has feelings for Quinn then why have him rescued by Astrid and then send wooly man after him?

And Dar surely had no idea Quinn was on to something so why not leave him in Bellevue? No one would believe him with his paranoia anyway.

Unless the shooting at Carrie's house showed him where Quinn was living and he thought he may be a liability.

Trollspoopglitter · 01/04/2017 14:47

I don't think wooly man was meant to go after Quinn, but I took it to mean wooly man (correctly assessed) Quinn was a ticking time bomb that would find its way back to New York and Dar's plan to squirrel him away with Astrid's help wasn't working.

Also, the plan is to frame Carrie. Quinn ends up on national tv and manages to warn Carrie.

It was either kill him or hide him out of the way - I thought Dar hiding him out of the way (because he was never actually part of the destroy Carrie and her life plan) - showed Dar did care. Should've arranged for an accidental overdose or suicide while institutionalised to tie up the "loose" end if he didn't care for him.

Hassled · 02/04/2017 20:18

I'm not convinced that Dar has feelings for Quinn - or for anyone. He's pretty much a cartoon baddie at this stage - not an ounce of humanity left. But then I'm so confused by the Dar/Quinn/Woolly Hat triangle that anything could be true.

I've eaten a disgusting amount of takeaway curry and unless my stomach does the decent thing and actually explodes in the next 50 minutes, there will be no Saul Snacks tonight. I fear even a wafer-thin mint would finish me off.

Signing in.

I usually have toast for my Saul snacks but we've no bread so I'm having two mcvities chocolate digestives.

I agree hassled I don't think dar feels for anyone, but I would be really pleased if they actually did decide to give dar a human side in this season and give us a bit of insight into how he became who he is. Everyone else has a back story. He just seems like the token 2D villain.
