'The Young Pope' - is there a thread yet?

I am riveted.
And I am imagining how much fun the writer/s must have had writing the dialogue.
And whoever wrote/chose the music is a genius.

I have no faith and do not have a Catholic background, and yet find myself quite unsettled by Pius XIII.
I think we have yet to figure out whether his a Good or a Bad character.

What do you all think?

My favourite bit was the dream homily in Episode 1 Grin

I love the randomness of the kangaroo.

I have just re-watched Ep 1 with my parents and it is even better than I remembered.
V weird, but excellent.

I've watched eps 1 & 2 but have to admit I've not given it my full attention so don't really understand what's going on. But beautiful sets, powerful music, and Jude Law (who I don't normally admire) is very easy on the eye! Will keep going with it and try to focus more Wink

After recording the first 3 episodes I finally got round to watching - wish I hadn't bothered. Muddled, confusing and no idea what's supposed to be going on, Lasted about 20 minutes and deleted all the rest,.

Oh, Dany, I think you missed out.

It is weird and confusing and not v linear.
I love the fact that even after episode 4 it is not quite clear wether The Young Pope is a Good Thing or Not Grin

Ashamed to say, whilst of work for a couple of weeks I may have binged watched it online, up to episode 9/10.

I am a little bit addicted! It's genius.

I spent the first 3 episodes unsure as to whether I liked it and wondering whether it worth persevering with... I'm now really glad I've stuck with it and love it! Still totally confused and most of the time as to what it's all about or where it's heading, but it's such entertaining watching and I love Jude Law in it and have never been a fan till now.

I think he is 'the second coming of christ' but all his 'turmoil' (vivid imagery/hallucinations an first couple of episodes) means he's conflicted, and could be the form of 'the anti-christ'...........I think his parents leaving him at the orphanage, is because there was a bigger plan for him.

I never had much of a thing for Jude Law, but he really owns this role.
Although the American accent is a bit dodgy in places...

After reading upthread that it's weird and confusing, I'm really glad I gave up on it - I can't do weird or confusing. Everything has to be very plain for my brain to cope with otherwise I drive everybody mad asking questions!!

I love it too, but it did take time - I actually fell asleep in one of the first few episodes. The music is brilliant, as is the opening sequence, and don't get me started on the kangaroo...

Not sure about Diane K's role - she seems a bit underused.

I love it! Same as pp I was never a jude law fan but he's absolutely excellent in this.
The whole cast is excellent and it's visually stunning.

The young pope is almost terrifying but also really funny. I love the bits of humour scattered around.
I also want a kangaroo Blush

They are just amazing - and, to me, more so because I know that they actually exist and are worn. All hand-made by the faithful, of course.

I would love to know whether the series was filmed on location Grin.
I cannot imagine the Vatican giving permission if they got to read the script. And I cannot imagine them giving permission without reading the script.
If all the locations are sets and green screens and clever computer wizardry - well, I'm well impressed.
How do you 'mock up' the Sixtine Chapel??

Another fan here. That scene last night between the pope and the Italian Prime Minister was just superb.

I've been wondering about the locations too - surely they must be using Rome and I'd assume the Vatican, but as others have said how earth would they have been given permission! I wonder what the Vatican think of it?

OMG - just watched episode 5.

I'm loving the series/plot development but really do NOT like the pope this week.
His friend otoh seems to have more humane qualities.

That poor young lad Sad

I believe it's filmed in Italy and New York. I don't know how I know that so I'm off to Google it....

A lot of us Catholics who went to convent schools, had struggles with the whole male/female thing with the church and have become "lapsed"over our adult lives are enjoying watching Pope Lenny go after the hypocrisy, greed and naked power struggles amongst the Cardinals.
I am loving the series, and think Jude Law is great. I find myself laughing out loud in recognition of particularly crazy stuff. But then again, I am the great granddaughter, in NZ, of particularly repressed RC Irish immigrants My grannies were terrified of the priests and thought they could do no wrong. They would probably think I deserved to be excommunicated for watching the programme.
If anyone is particularly outraged by Lenny's tough stuff, don't overlook his big wink in the opening credits. And how about the compassionate and kind way he treated the young woman who was blackmailed into trying to seduce him?

I cannot help but wonder what practicing catholics may make of the program though?

Yes, I am still hopeful that he has what I would consider 'good' intentions, not rabidly lets-interpret-the-bible-literally-word-for-word ones.
His wanting to purge the Church of gay priests to 'set them free' made me chuckle. Although all the 'I want fanatics' and anti-abortion stuff is quite hard to see as a more worldly compassionate view.

And, can he or can he not actually work miracles? Shock

I love it - I'm a lapsed/ethnic Catholic (to quote Dara O'Briain 😉) and think the character of Lenny is brilliant. His face when he "made" the kangaroo jump this week was hilarious.

I think it's superbly written, though I did feel the cut scenes at the start of the episode (in Honduras) were a bit over done/shocking.

SongForSal, are there other legal sites where we can watch British television for free? We use Filmon.TV at the moment, but it would be good to have other options. Thanks
