NoahVale · 17/08/2016 06:51

Niles Wilson did so well, bronze in the high bar, first high bar medal for GB. totally overshadowed by other events.
and lovely Amy Tinkler.

of course Trott and Kenny were just fantastic. had to go out at 10.25 but luckily they delayed their race, twice Grin how nerve wracking though

Floralnomad · 17/08/2016 10:41

I do think that the events are being somewhat spoiled by the crowd , we first noticed it during the men's floor title when the crowd were cheering when the Japanese and American gymnasts made mistakes and the treatment of LaviIllenie is just disgusting .

IwannaSnorlax · 17/08/2016 10:56

I haven't noticed other than when Murray was playing & they removed someone (& Gatling being booed!). What happened with Lavelline?

Igneococcus · 17/08/2016 11:20

Lavillenie was booed during the medal ceremony, that is rubbish behaviour by the audience.

IwannaSnorlax · 17/08/2016 11:45

I'd just looked it up on the BBC Sports news - that's a disgrace. Why would they boo him during the medal ceremony?

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2016 12:02

Renaud had complained in a post event interview ( straight after) about the crowd booing him when he was trying to jump , he had equated it to the treatment of Jesse Owens at Munich and was very distressed . Yesterday morning he apologised for using that analogy by stood by the fact that the crowd were terrible and not proper sports fans and hence they booed him again last night . The medal ceremony last night was really sad but I'm sure at the next Diamond League in Europe the crowd will hopefully make up for it a bit .

StopLaughingDrRoss · 17/08/2016 15:23

I read somewhere (bbc?) that booing in Brazil is actually a compliment Confused

I don't think that was the case with Lavillenie and whilst his comparison was crass, it really isn't in the spirit of the Games to continue to boo despite his obviously sincere apology.

I must say I quite like the fact drug cheats who are now able to cheat are not getting the respect like the other athletes. Considering many are competing due to winning an appeal rather than flat out acceptance makes it quite hard to swallow on occasion. I think it's a sad state actually that these days when someone does an incredible sporting feat (ie the mens 800m world record or the absolutely amazing WR in the female 10k), people are immediately suspicious. I've seen people saying dodgy things about the British cyclists ie don't win until the Olympics. But things like the Russian doping scandal certainly don't help...

I don't know what the answer but all sports need to really be seen to clamp down. Hats off to the paralympic movement who seem to be much stricter and are flat out banning previous dopers from their Games - no appeals, no chances.

StopLaughingDrRoss · 17/08/2016 15:23

Oops - drug cheats who are now able to compete...

LotsOfDots · 17/08/2016 16:24

My goodness, the sprint kayak chaps are stacked aren't they! Enormous pecs and shoulders. It's a fast and furious thing isn't it!

CaveMum · 17/08/2016 16:31

Nick Skelton and Ben Maher have made it through to the next round for the individual showjumping medals. Michael Whitaker had to withdraw as his horse colicked last night (colic is a generic term used to describe a digestive tract problem in a horse, a lot of the time it can be resolved with some painkillers and walking the horse round to ease discomfort but in severe cases it can require surgery and be fatal).

GreenShadow · 17/08/2016 17:39

Stayed up for the first time last night to watch some athletics as I've been getting very frustrated about lack of the key Olympics sport at my only possible viewing time (i.e. evening). I can't normally watch during the afternoon and am not normally a night owl.

I love variety of athletics but watching it on catch-up is just not the same - I can't get very excited about sporting events that have already happened, even if I don't know the result. I haven't even managed to find much of an athletics highlights TV slot on in the evening as there are so many other sports to cover.

I might try staying up again if the 'big' events were soon after midnight but unfortunately most the ones I'd like to see are late (200m semis and Women's final tonight aren't until 2am onwards and the relays won't be until the end of their evening)

All frustrating but at least we had London last time so I suppose can't complain too much.

Andro · 17/08/2016 18:46

The crowd were utterly disgraceful during the pole vault ceremony, not the first example of appalling conduct and I doubt it will be the last. I would imagine that the IOC will think twice about sending the games to a south American country again after this!

Dolly80 · 17/08/2016 19:46

Good people of mumsnet ... I'm confused again! There's gymnastics on one of the BBC Olympic channels, but it's not for medals. In fact some of the gymnasts didn't compete in Rio (there was tumbling which I don't think is in the Olympic programme) Is it like an exhibition event to mark the closing of gymnastics?
