They were not that small in the last scene when they are flying over the shops.

Trills · 01/07/2016 08:13

Small Arya is so much smaller!

I think that until this season the live dragons we saw were not much bigger than real animals - they've grown loads now and are getting closer to the size of the skullls.

TheNorthRemembers · 01/07/2016 08:35

Balerion, the Black Dread was the largest of the Targaryen dragons. This is my - What? I have never realised that!

From AWOIAF:
Balerion was the largest of all the Targaryen dragons. His fire was as black as his scales, his wingspan so vast that entire towns would fall under his shadow when he passed overhead. His teeth were as long as swords, and his jaws were large enough to swallow an aurochs whole, or even one of the hairy mammoths that are said to roam the cold wastes beyond the Port of Ibben.

But I would add that he was nearly 200 years or possibly more when he died. So the size of Dany's six-year-old dragon might be a bit of an artistic licence. I do not know.

Lweji · 01/07/2016 08:41

Eating a mammoth is not easy. Dany's dragons aren't anywhere close.

Btw, has Cersei spent all or most of that fire thing? Will she regret it when the dragons arrive? Or will she be able to make more?

AliceInHinterland · 01/07/2016 10:40

I'm wavering between re-read's and reading the prequel type things. Are they any good?
I can't work out the scale of the dragons I need to go and dig out a picture with Dany riding one.

pyrowall · 01/07/2016 10:52

I'm planning a first proper read (I read the first one in a hurry!)

I've just got to get all the books - anyone know of a good deal anywhere?

WeDoNotSow · 01/07/2016 11:06

pyro I saw the whole set in the works.
Don't know how much, but they tend to be v cheap

WeDoNotSow · 01/07/2016 11:09

Just checked, all 7 books for 29.99 in the works with box.
Or if you don't necessarily need them to be in the same set, but individually from eBay or Amazon from third party sellers (the buy second hand bit) and you'll be able to get them for a couple of quid each

pyrowall · 01/07/2016 11:10

I've got a few quid in my amazon account - might get a couple on there

pyrowall · 01/07/2016 11:12

Books or Kindle?

CaitAgusMadra · 01/07/2016 12:38

I have the main 5 on kindle and it's absolutely fine. Also means I don't have to deal with DHs eyerolls when he sees me reading them (not a fan of fantasy books!)

MustStopAndThinkBeforePosting · 01/07/2016 13:27

Final scene theory:

You know what Cercei says to Ned in S1E7 "When you play the Game of Thrones you win or you die"

YouTube here

  • so I reckon that in the final episode, after the white walkers have come south, absolutely everyone (who has been politically active during the series) will be dead except for one character - who will be one of the outsider possibilities for the Iron Throne eg Jon Snow or Gendry. Some common people who haven't been involved in affairs of state will survive but the final scene will bear out this quote from Cercei. Anyone who has made any kind of play for power throughout the 8 series will be dead unless they are the one who wins. I think that might mean every named character.

Bleak. But GRRM doesn't do happy endings.

OlennasWimple · 01/07/2016 15:34

What's really interesting is the fact that the Night King and the white walkers take us away from normal fantasy tropes towards an apocalyptic end game. Generally those sorts of films / books end either with a small band of survivors surveying the landscape on a bright day following a long, dark battle with the other forces and you have a sense of the challenge ahead, but also confidence It Will Be Ok.

Or - particularly if it is the start of a franchise - the above scene, but the final shot includes something unnerving, which the reader / viewer knows means that it will all happen again, possibly worse than the struggle we have just seen. So in GoT, perhaps a baby's eyes glowing blue, or a dragon egg cracking, or something similar to indicate it ain't really over...

OlennasWimple · 01/07/2016 15:35

I agree most main characters will be dead at the end

YesThisIsMe · 01/07/2016 16:03

The books have sold in huge quantities and some people inevitably won't like them once they've started, so I think your chances are very good of picking them up in charity shops - or even from the free book shelves at tube stations. I think I got most of mine from Save the Children.

pyrowall · 01/07/2016 16:13

I've bought first two for Kindle - £3.99 and £2.99
I'll look for the set in our local charity book shop

WeDoNotSow · 01/07/2016 17:24

I've done it, I only went and ordered the World book. Am excited.
DH thinks I'm sad. And geeky.
Yay!

iisme · 01/07/2016 18:26

I think Jorah will be significant somehow before the end. It can't be a coincidence that the Mormants have been so important to Jon - I think he'll turn up on team Dany.

Jaime would def be the head of the Lannister family instead of Cersei, unless he is disbarred because of previously being in the Kings guard - as with UK royal succession until a couple of years ago, women could inherit if there are no brothers, but brothers always take precedence regardless of age. Except in Dorne - hence the whole Myrcella plot (in the books, not the show).

Not sure how important Jon's legitimacy is going to be. There's been so much overthrowing of the old order and even more so when the dragons and the White walkers arrive. Jon has no right to be King in the North because he's illegitimate, but he's the one with the army and the control, and enough stark blood to make people feel the is some continuation.

Also, some pages ago, yes, I meant white Ravens rather than doves. cringe

fukkigucci · 01/07/2016 18:40

Spent a few hours reading this thread.
I think there won't really be any houses left by the end. I think that the monarchy type world will be the main casualty. The commoners in the GoT world really have no impact on the big houses and vice versa.
I'm running on no sleep so haven't really worded or explained the theory well, will try to expand when my brain is in gear.

EverySongbirdSays · 01/07/2016 20:43

Buzzfeed have done a pretty good "Easter Egg" run down

Am I link spamming too much?

Do let me know.

One of the theories is of course that they will have to melt the throne, and there will be no queen or King in the end.

Maybe echoing the end of meritocracy and replacement with democracy.

So no more Kings and you have elected people.

TYRION FOR PRESIDENT.

Or, they hold a referendum and the kingdoms all go their separate ways.

It could happen.
