I think LF has his Valerian steel dagger back! I spotted it in the conversation with Ned just before Robert dies and LF betrays Ned in the throne room - I reckon it would have been very simple for LF to take it from Ned's office with everything else going on

OlennasWimple · 02/07/2016 02:13

Oh, I spotted three of those 21 "Easter eggs"

Fiderer · 02/07/2016 08:31

Mr Tormund Giantsbane MP, Beyond The Wall Constituency, Shadow Defence Secretary Grin

I like all the links too

Trills · 02/07/2016 10:23

I was so pleased to see the direwolf back on top of clockwork Winterfell!

Middleoftheroad · 02/07/2016 11:08

Maybe Jorah and a stone army from old Valyria can defeat the walkers

Maybe wolves will rule in the end

Not checked out the Easter Eggs yet but will head there now thanks

TheHiphopopotamus · 02/07/2016 16:06

Sorry for asking so many (probably stupid and obvious questions) but what was the point of Jon Snow dying?

Was it just so he could leave the Night's Watch? Or does it fulfill some ancient prophesy? Because it doesn't seem to have changed him in any way, his personality seems to be exactly the same.

Trills · 02/07/2016 16:08

The point? Well, it was a great cliffhanger.

And now his watch is ended.

TheHiphopopotamus · 02/07/2016 16:17

The point? Well, it was a great cliffhanger

I'm not so sure it was. In a show that's famed for killing the popular characters off, I think it was a bit of a cop out.

And didn't Beric Dondarrion say he came back a bit different every time? (I may be wrong, can't remember exactly) Jon seems to be exactly the same. I suppose it has Christ-like undertones though.

TheHiphopopotamus · 02/07/2016 16:21

I'm probably not articulating it very well though Grin I don't think anyone thought they were really going to kill him off.

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 02/07/2016 16:21

I think it was firstly to release him from his vows (a big deal as deserters get beheaded so needed to happen) and to show he is special and give him gravitas

EverySongbirdSays · 02/07/2016 16:24

I think ultimately "the point" is that he took a "until death" oath with The Night's Watch. If he breaks that Oath they are supposed to kill him. That's why Ned beheads the guy in the very first episode - for deserting the watch.

He hasn't deserted. He was with the watch until he died.

There is some other Azor Ahai related stuff which is less explicit in the show. Mel has visions of him and shit. North or Cait will be along Grin

Narratively speaking the point was to release him from the Watch.

MustStopAndThinkBeforePosting · 02/07/2016 17:28

I think he's changed. He seems a lot more cynical since getting stabbed and betrayed by his "brothers"

TheNorthRemembers · 02/07/2016 17:46

I love the Easter eggs. Only spotted the King in The North scene. Thick as a castle wall I am.

Mel in the books: Yet now she could not even seem to find her king. "I pray for a glimpse of Azor Ahai, and R'hllor shows me only Snow."

King Robert: “Kings are a rare sight in the north.” Robert snorted. “More likely they were hiding under the snow. Snow, Ned!”

In the show someone (maybe Dany) saw a vision of snow falling on the Iron Throne.

Now thinking about when Summer sees a dragon over Winterfell that may just symbolise Jon. Dragons in visions and prophecies in Dunk and Egg always symbolised Targs.

TheNorthRemembers · 02/07/2016 17:49

The prophecy:
"when the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone."

WingMirrorSpider · 02/07/2016 18:00

It's all really clever isn't it? All these seeds planted in the early books/episodes that you didn't notice at the time but now click into place.

I love reading the theories which is a good job as I need something to keep me going until the next series or book comes out (can't see it being the book tbh).

One thing I've noticed about the show are a few inconsistencies with accents. Robb and Jon had/have northern accents but the other Stark kids don't. I wonder why they didn't cast northern accented kids for them (although I can't imagine anyone else playing Sansa, Arya and Bran as they're all fab) but Lady Mormont has a northern accent. Theon also has one, but his family don't. I know he grew up with the Starks from the age of 10 or so, maybe that's why.

And Roose and Ramsey were northerners too but didn't have the accent. Also Jorah.

Robert B. Had one but not Renly or Stannis, and why does Sam have a northern accent when he's from down south (the Reach?)

Not that any of this detracts from the show for me.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 02/07/2016 18:10

Robb and Jon had/have northern accents but the other Stark kids don't.

They had a southern mother and possibly southern governesses, because while Robb would have taken over Winterfel, the others would be raised to marry other aristocratic families around Westeros, so would be raised like our upper class/aristocracy and would all have the equivalent of a public school accent regardless of where their family seat was

EverySongbirdSays · 02/07/2016 18:12

There's a funny Kit Harington video about their accents

Apparently they were all supposed to do RP (presumably because that's the accent they know in the US)

Sean Bean was asked if he could do one and said "Nuuuuuuwww"

so they all got told they had to be Northern Grin

I'll see if I can find it.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 02/07/2016 18:12

and why does Sam have a northern accent when he's from down south (the Reach?)

Maybe because his brother was the favourite so trained at home, and Sam was shipped off to northern relatives for his training/education, as happened in the cousins war (children of home counties aristocracy raised/educated by governesses in Wales)

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 02/07/2016 18:13

What's RP?

Sansa would definitely not have a northern accent though, eldest stark daughter who was always groomed for wife-dom down south

EverySongbirdSays · 02/07/2016 18:17

ElspethFlashman · 02/07/2016 18:18

Well the funniest accent thing for me was Davos and Gendry sharing reminiscences about growing up on the same street in Kings Landing when they both had completely different accents.

Actually Davos's accent is just a weird choice overall cos the actor has an Irish accent, lol. So why choose Northern for a "Southern" character? ?

EverySongbirdSays · 02/07/2016 18:19

RP = Received Pronunciation

The kind of English you'd be taught in Elecution lessons, Speech and Drama.

Queens English

EverySongbirdSays · 02/07/2016 18:21

A lot of them Baelish, Davos, Catelyn, Rickon, Hodor are Irish

Richard Madden (Robb) is Scottish

BrieAndChilli · 02/07/2016 18:28

I'm surprised if they changed that accent for Sean Bean, he does loads of different accents in legends.
