I swear to the old gods and the new, Dany and Jon better not end up together

OlennasWimple · 28/06/2016 00:42

I wrote a long post just now but it got lost...

I was struck by how many people on the other thread complained about the rape in GoT. Thinking back, I can think of 2 shown rapes (Cersei, Dany) plus off screen (Sansa) and told stories (Elia Martell, Lyanna), but the numbers are v low compared to gratuitous nudity / child violence / domestic violence / beheadings... Just interesting how casual viewers see it

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 28/06/2016 00:45

Can someone just answer two things for me? I'm so confused!

Why is Benjen blue and can't go over the wall?

Who is Gendry? 😳

EverySongbirdSays · 28/06/2016 00:46

I can think of many popular detective/crime series that are just as popular and more gratuitous. For example, I had to stop watching Hannibal, it was very good but I couldn't watch it. The gore was something else.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 28/06/2016 00:46

The dead can't cross the wall
but bran was touched by a white walker.. so doesn't that mean that he'll break the wall's magic if he crosses it, then all the dead can follow?

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 28/06/2016 00:48

I get that the rape scenes are difficult to watch

But I take issue with anyone who stopped watching it at the point of Sansa's rape
Because to get that far they tolerate Dany's marital rape and Cerceis rape
But not Sansa?

WeDoNotSow · 28/06/2016 00:48

I'm assuming so Adulting it makes sense

I really wanted to see the Weirwood tree door under the wall that only NW can go through, but no....

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 28/06/2016 00:50

No that came out wrong, I dont take issue with people who just stopped watching, season 5 was horrible
But the people who make an issue about it saying they were boycotting it because of the rape, I just think: what about the other women? why didn't you boycot it then?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 28/06/2016 00:51

So Benjen is dead??

EverySongbirdSays · 28/06/2016 00:51

Poppins

Gendry worked in a forge, mother unknown. Ned identified him as Robert's bastard and he got out of the city (with Arya) before Cersei killed him.

In the books, he ends up with the Brotherhood Without Banners.

In the show this goes further Melisandre takes him hostage and delivers him to Stannis were they use his blood "King's Blood" to perform witchcraft. Melisandre intends to sacrifice him as she did Mance and Shireen to make Stannis powerful. Davos rescues him and smuggles him out. He was last seen rowing alone on a boat out of Storms End about 3 years ago and so is oft joked about as being "on the boat"

In the book these events also happen but to Gendry's half brother Edric.

I thought the beginning (preparation for the trial) was really well done.

Varys gets about a bit, doesn't he?

EverySongbirdSays · 28/06/2016 00:57

Benjen is kind of like the White Walkers now. He's not quite dead but not really alive either after being revived by the Children Of The Forest.

He does not share the White Walkers purpose of needing to kill men, and retains that about him that made him "Benjen" but is one of "them" effectively.

RE Cersei's rape, that fucked me off too, he doesn't rape her in the book. It's super gross, but it's consensual.

OP posts:
AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 28/06/2016 00:58

yeah I didn't like that, the journeys in GOT are supposed to take weeks/months, and Varys has just seemed to have hopped on easy jet and nipped back to Mereen just in time!

SoTheySentMeA · 28/06/2016 02:01

Wow you guys are on page 15 already and I've only just watched!

First things first: R+L=J!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I completely freaked out and burst into tears Grin (read the first book back in 2005ish and guessed it back then (biggest clue was Danys vision where she saw a blue rose growing from a wall of ice right after someone in another storyline had said blue roses were Lyanna Starks fave flower and Jon had arrived at the Wall, as well as all of Neds internal bellyaching about Jon) so it was pretty cathartic to find out I was right after 11 years of waiting...

SoTheySentMeA · 28/06/2016 02:10

We had to rewind the Tommen bit and watch it again as we just couldn't believe it. Out the window, just like that!

SoTheySentMeA · 28/06/2016 02:13

Dany making Tyrion Hand. Knowing what that would mean to him.
#tears

SoTheySentMeA · 28/06/2016 02:17

Sorry if it's been mentioned already but did anyone else catch Sansa's smile when Lady Mormont said she knows only one King in the north and his name is stark, but then the smile dropped when she went on to proclaim Jon the King?

CaptainWarbeck · 28/06/2016 02:45

Chewing a wasp

GrinGrinGrin

New favourite phrase!

OlennasWimple · 28/06/2016 03:35

Hmm, SoThey, just watched this bit back (got to it by coincidence when reading your comment). I see what you mean, but Sansa had already said that she thought of Bed as a Stark. Plus Lyanna spoke of a king, which clearly wasn't intended to be a reference to Sansa.

However... Why was Ned so shocked by Lyanna's naming of her baby? He is visibly reeling

And, where was Ghost? All the CGI budget spent on dragons and wildfyre..?

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 28/06/2016 04:44

I watched the name scene again and it doesn't look like she says aemon. I have no idea what she does say though

MustStopAndThinkBeforePosting · 28/06/2016 04:59

So....

R+L=J - it's natural that J would have Stark colouring despite being R's son as L is obviously just as Stark as Ned and Stark genes are obviously very dominant as only Sanaa has Tully colouring and all the rest are Ned.

I reckon that L's dying whisper to Ned includes the info that J is actually trueborn and that she had married R. The marriage doesn't have to take place before conception for the baby to be trueborm, just needs to be before the birth. Remember that this whole Tower of Joy thing is happening during Robert's rebellion - Ned returned home from that fight with little baby J. So within that conflict Robert has ordered the Targ line to be wiped out. R's wife and child are killed by the Mountain and R dies in battle but could he have managed a quick secret shotgun wedding with L when he hides her in the Tower of Joy for safety? Pretty sure that although the Stark/Baratheon line is that R kidnapped and raped L, actually it was all consensual.

Anyway - If so then J's claim to the Iron Throne outweighs Dany's as the son of the mad king's firstborn. Of course he doesn't have a fleet of ships, a Dothraki horde and dragons on his side, plus he doesn't want the iron throne.

Bran being touched by the night king in his vision left a mark on him that broke the magic protection of their wyrwood tree. When he crosses the wall he will break the magic of the wall and the white walkers will be able to cross it and devastate the southern lands. Good thing Dany's dragons can breathe that much fire.

I don't think there's a happily ever after for Dany. Even if she sits on the Iron Throne briefly, she is getting there with the help of a fleet of pirates, a horde of barbarian warriors who make Ghengis Khan look like a boy scout, and 3 dragons each of which needs to destroy some poor farmer's livelihood on a regular basis. I can't see this transitioning to a peaceful and prosperous reign, no matter who she marries. Best case scenario for her - if she wins the fight with Cercei for the iron throne then all her forces get defeated in the fight with the white walkers - including the dragons sacrificing themselves creating an almost nuclear-scale explosion to wipe out the last of the white walkers. She could then marry the next obvious candidate (Jon?) and have a happily ever after but GRRM doesn't specialise in those.

SausageSmuggler · 28/06/2016 07:25

Ooh I did enjoy that episode.
I had a bit of an Ayra celebration at Frey Bentos pie.

I reckon Jaime is done with Cersi now. His children are all dead because of her actions. Poor Tommen - he could've been a very kind ruler if he'd not been so easily manipulated.

I don't think Sansa will go off with LF but now Jon is King in the North she knows he'll be plotting against them. I can't see him getting to the iron throne but equally I don't think he'll die - he's too slimey.

Tyrion being made hand of the queen. Loved that scene, it was so sweet. I think he would actually make a very good husband for Sansa now he's matured a bit.

Not happy about the wait for the next season.

SausageSmuggler · 28/06/2016 07:32

Oh, I forgot to say that Lyanna Mormont is now my favourite character ever. Olenna comes a close second after shutting down the sand snakes. Grin

RJnomore1 · 28/06/2016 07:41

I don't see Dany and Jon getting together. I don't know why though.

TheDisreputableDog · 28/06/2016 07:48

I thought Arya's pie was an interesting back reference to the Rat Cook story Bran tells when they are crossing the wall where the cook is punished not for serving the King his son in a pie but for breaking the Guest rights law of hospitality 'salt and bread', which of course is the same thing the Frey's broke at the Red Wedding....
