Interesting interview with the author. Particularly his meeting with the producers and the question he asked them.

GuinefortGrey · 21/06/2016 14:55

LadyStark yes a bit ick, but not massively so by GOT standards Grin. Also it's always been clear that Jon & Sansa were not close as children and she did not consider him her real brother.

EverySongbirdSays · 21/06/2016 14:57

I don't think they'll be a reaction that it's offensive to Hillsborough Cheddar - it's US produced so the cultural reference is unlikely to be on their radar and also, though it reminded lots of us of that - being crushed in battle was probably also a thing in those days, it's not deliberate.

It was me that mentioned Hillsborough cheddar but I understand that it wouldn't necessarily be on the radar of a US TV director.

It certainly wouldn't have been a deliberate reference - crushes happen all over the place - battlefields, rock concerts etc.

PuraVida · 21/06/2016 15:37

apols. i've had to skip from half way down so someone else might have said this; re: all the stuff about Sansa not telling Jon that LF was on his way. It was Ramsay who started the battle by walking out with Rickon so even if Jon had known they were on the way, it was all going to kick off at that point anyway. he wouldn't have left Rickon wandering around in no man's land while he waited for back up to arraive surely?

BelfastBloke · 21/06/2016 16:20

Except all the cast and production crew for those scenes are British and Irish - they would all get the Hillsborough reference, as their first reference point

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 21/06/2016 16:22

Pura- they had arranged the day before to meet on the battlefield that morning. It wasn't a surprise.

pyrowall · 21/06/2016 16:23

Good point belfast

OlennasWimple · 21/06/2016 16:50

There was a moment when Sansa could have told Jon about LF's troops, when they were talking after the Council and she was saying we don't have enough troops and Jon says we aren't going to get any more. I think she doesn't because:

  • she isn't 100% that they will turn up in time or at all
  • she is annoyed that Jon didn't seek her advice or listen to her input
  • dramatic effect

I think the last is the main one! Similarly, Jon didn't die because he is too important to the story right now - as a pp on another forum said, "he was wearing +10 plot armour"

However (having watched the opening again), why don't LF's horses fall into the trenches dug to prevent Bolton's horses encircling the Stark troops? (Davos reassures Tormund that they have done this, to prevent a repeat of what happened when Mance was defeated)

feckity · 21/06/2016 17:06

I think that was if they held their ground and made Ramsay charge them. By charging out to get Rickon, and making all his men follow him, Jon ruined the plan.

OlennasWimple · 21/06/2016 17:42

Jon Snow does know nothing, after all...

AliceInHinterland · 21/06/2016 18:11

I did wonder where the Stark banners were kept - they looked pristine. I could imagine someone putting them away carefully when the Bolton's took over Winterfell - just in case!
Will we go from the war of the five kings to to the peace of the five queens? (PP suggested seven but I think five is perhaps more poetic. Someone in Dorne, King's Landing (Dany), The North (Sansa or Arya), Yara in the Iron Islands and one more (preferably a Mormont - but maybe a wildling?)
Is there any support for the Others having a good side, they seem to be thinking beings, or are they just an out of control agent of destruction?

AliceInHinterland · 21/06/2016 18:12

(Bolton's = Boltons I can imagine this thread is riddled with terrifying pedants)

OlennasWimple · 21/06/2016 18:34

Maybe... Blush

TheNorthRemembers · 21/06/2016 18:44

Olenna You should know by now that LF and his troops can fly over trenches. This is how they can get anywhere very quickly and also hide, so that no one knows they are coming.

Very charitably people think Sansa worried about Ramsay's little birds overhearing that the Knight of the Vale are coming if she told Jon. But said little birds are so dim and blind that they did not notice 6-8,000 troops for weeks when there is a shortage of food and hard winter. They must have gone past at least Moat Cailin and the Dreadfort. There is only the King's Road, which sounds exactly like the dirt track the A1 in the North is. Also the North sounds like the place where everyone has known everyone else for generations, so they would notice total strangers.
I do not blame Sansa. It is just bad writing again.

For Alice's terrifying pedants

Doobigetta · 21/06/2016 19:12

So now what the hell is going to happen? There can't be many Northerners left after that, and Jon is going to have to execute most of them. And why did they all stay loyal to the Boltons until the end? I get why they wouldn't declare for the Starks before the battle, but surely the Umbers wouldn't choose to ally with the psycho who killed the youngest child of their old lord just to piss someone off.

I did like it when Ramsay clocked LF's army and his face just dropped. Beautiful.
