Just saw a lovely trailer, it starts on 26th May. Can't wait

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 27/06/2016 22:33

I'm thinking it might be Jade.

Fontella · 27/06/2016 22:35

Bit surprised at that if I'm honest. I thought it would be Jade going.

Haggisfish · 27/06/2016 23:26

I thought Joyce. Jade did take a lot of care.

Haggisfish · 27/06/2016 23:27

Also think Charlotte to win.

SoupDragon · 28/06/2016 07:32

I'm thinking back to last series and only in the first one was the winner who I really expected it to be. On that basis, I'm thinking the editing has been done to make Charlotte look the obvious winner when actually it was Jade.

They are pretty evenly matched even with Jade's lack of experience.

LunaLoveg00d · 28/06/2016 07:55

I think it's too close to call for the final next week. They didn't show what they would be doing, but in the clips it appeared to be sparkly occasion dresses.

Tracey came across very well but I won't miss those smock things she wore with the "novelty" fabric panels.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/06/2016 11:05

Watching in iPlayer now, Charlotte's lovely, she's so happy to help.

TheSilveryPussycat · 28/06/2016 11:54

I enjoyed last night's episode hugely.

But I always feel frustrated afterwards at seeing the clothes I'd love (and have been searching for in vain), and not knowing anyone who might make them Sad - I'd be prepared to pay for one of those Japanese skirts (yes I know it'd be a lot of labour, but it would be a wardrobe mainstay).

I did sewing many moons ago at school. It took a term to make an apron - all straight seams! I even tried to make a dress at home when I was late teens - twas crap. So taking up sewing is not an option Grin.

BurningGubbins · 28/06/2016 12:19

Just caught up. It was a close call between Tracey and Joyce, but I don't think Tracey would have been up to the level for the final. She's a good sewer but her styles are just not there. I have no idea how the judges put her second in the alteration challenge, I thought hers was bloody awful!

Charlotte to win!

TheSilveryPussycat · 28/06/2016 12:24

It somehow looked better if you could leave aside that it was Tracey's. She lacked style, the style in this seemed kind of accidental, I was pleasantly surprised after seeing the making of it.

I was impressed at how she refined her sewing over the series. A busy woman who has learned to sew fast is my guess.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/06/2016 12:36

The japanese skirt is doable. it was just the time pressure that was difficult.

SoupDragon · 28/06/2016 12:46

I thought Tracey's alteration challenge looked poorly sewn. I also didn't like Charlott's but I think it would have looked better in a different pattern.

SoupDragon · 28/06/2016 12:50

Do you think the skirt is the "asymmetric skirt" listed in this year's book?

TellMeDani · 28/06/2016 13:09

I think next week could be a close call.

I think if Joyce is to win she will need to make her things more fitted and I can't see that happening...perhaps they should have given her a younger model if they wanted the stuff to be more fitted? Her model looks about my Aunts age and she would have worn the tea dress as it was.

LunaLoveg00d · 28/06/2016 14:05

Agree that the skirt wouldn't be too much of a nightmare if you had loads of time to do it. It was the time pressure and hte need to be so neat on the topstitching.

I didn't like the alteration challenge as much as some of the others in the series, the ones where they had to transform silk scarves or saris were much more interesting.

JudyCoolibar · 28/06/2016 16:11

Based on previous years, I suspect the finalists spent the last week frantically measuring up their nearest and dearest who will probably turn up as "surprise" models.

SoupDragon · 28/06/2016 16:13

I thought that :o

TheSilveryPussycat · 28/06/2016 17:33

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that Grin.

Actually I could understand how that skirt was constructed and the stuff about the notches and everything :) I could see you need time and skill though!

JudyCoolibar · 28/06/2016 19:06

I think you'd have to be a total masochist to try to make that skirt.

I thought Joyce was going to go, given the judges' enthusiasm over Tracy's duvet remake and the problems they pointed out on Joyce's dress. However, on reflection Tracy's dress was quite frumpy, and they might have taken into account that Charlotte saved her from disaster on the skirt.

Fontella · 28/06/2016 20:19

I agree about Tracey's alteration challenge - it was ugly but I think she got placed 2nd because it was so far removed from the original duvet, plus a lot of work had gone into it with all the pleatings, it was a two piece etc and although not attractive it was inventive.

The two behind her - Joyce's beach effort deservedly came last, and I think Jade's was just too uninventive - the sort of draped roman effort.

I initially thought Jade should have gone, but then reading your comment I think you are right. Tracey was a decent sewer but her styles just didn't hit the mark.

I'm happy now with the three finalists. All very different, but all with their strengths.

RueDeWakening · 28/06/2016 20:47

I think Tracey is a competent home sewer, but she just hasn't stepped up like the others have over the weeks. She's lacked the flair that Jade in particular has shown, and Charlotte too. I doubt Joyce will win, but she certainly has a lot of experience to call on, and I think that's carried her through sometimes so far.

I'm backing Jade to win, but wouldn't mind if it was Charlotte.

I also quite fancy having a go at that skirt, has anyone seen the pattern? Or a similar one? masochist alert :o

SoupDragon · 28/06/2016 21:20

There's an "asymmetric skirt" lists in the patterns for the new book but I don't know if it's the bonkers swirly one.

SunnyL · 28/06/2016 21:51

I've got the book and the skirt is in it. I didn't think all that much when I looked at the picture but now I've seen the programme I'm a bit intimidated. My mum text me halfway through sewing bee last night to drop hints about me making her the skirt.

The books nice though - got it for £10 on amazon

Fontella · 28/06/2016 22:23

For the first time ever I don't mind who wins.

All three have produced some outstanding work, all have different strengths. I doubt it will be Joyce but you just never know. If the others have a slip up.

Really looking forward to the final but will be sad to see the end of the series. One of my favourite programmes on the box .

frenchfancy · 29/06/2016 07:18

I think Tracy going was the right decision. I really liked her and thought she had skill but she was definitely saved by Charlotte in the skirt challenge (but then so was Jade). I really wish she would use her skill to make herself some nice clothes though - she is doing herself no favours in those tunics.

I'm really pleased Jade is in the finals. My 16 yr old DD has been getting into sewing on and off for a couple of years (read sew one thing wait 6 months then start again) and Jade has given her motivation and showed her that even though she is young she can make lovely things. She is going to make some Hareem pants today, and made a dress last week that she has already worn twice.
