Just saw a lovely trailer, it starts on 26th May. Can't wait

OP posts:
CatherineDeB · 29/06/2016 11:18

I have traced the skirt pattern and think it will be good for a pear shape Wink and I like it. Not that hard if you pin it, baste it and take your time. I plan on making it in a lightweight wool felt but half wonder if I could make it in something else like cord or denim, for summer travelling. I think I could do a rolled hem on my overlocker on the top bit to neaten the edge before I sew it.

I don't think Joyce will win even though she is very experienced, her tailored clothes are never fitted enough for them, although one dress was from memory.

I think it will be Jade, I think she is what they want this year, someone new, we have had a man, an older woman (from memory) and now a young thing I reckon.

TheSilveryPussycat · 29/06/2016 11:39

Perhaps I'll get the book and see if I can find someone near who might make it.

CatherineDeB · 29/06/2016 11:46

I have bought all the books Silvery even though I missed the first series - 20 odd patterns for £10 is incredible, even if you butcher alter them as I am inclined to do it is really good for ideas.

frenchfancy · 29/06/2016 11:57

Just ordered the book. I think the skirt in denim, with an overlocked edge, could be great.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/06/2016 12:04

You need lightweight denim though.
I would not overlock, the threads will spoil the finish. Just go slowly on the curves, I even would pin as I go, I think if I had too many pins to start with would restrict the natural way of the fabric.

I love sewing curves and always do the most minimal pinning I can get away with.

Light boiled wool type of thing would be lovely.

redexpat · 29/06/2016 13:38

There are books?!

CatherineDeB · 29/06/2016 14:30

They are really good value red, loads of patterns for £10!

chardonnay, seeing as they suggest neoprene, wool felt etc., I think it would be fine in any sort of denim (as in what I have got in my boxes will do for try no 1) with a tiny 2 or 3 thread rolled hem on the yoke .... but that is the beauty of home sewing, you can go in whatever direction you want to!!

Roussette · 29/06/2016 20:50

Just caught up on last two weeks as been away. I think Tracy was right decision to go, to be frank I really don't like what she makes when it's her choice... the materials and the styles etc.

Looking forward to next week's final, any one of them could win!

dillite · 29/06/2016 21:47

Finally managed to catch up- had to abandon the programme on Monday as we had to watch GoT.

That skirt was crazy! It looked like something you would make if you fancied losing your sanity.

I loved Charlotte's duvet cover dress. There was something about the pattern of that duvet cover that just made it look very cool.

The made to measure challenge was very good. Charlotte's was my favourite. Jade's looked like something she had already made before, it just felt like I had already seen it. Joyce's was very granny-isn. Maybe if she had taken it in a bit more it would have looked better. Finally, I disliked Tracey's dress greatly. Perhaps if it hadn't had that garish accent fabric and monstrous collar it would have looked better. Can't say I am sorry that she ended up leaving.

I am looking forward to seeing next week's final.

SoupDragon · 30/06/2016 07:13

That's where Joyce is "failing" on the pattern challenge isn't it? She sews it like she would at home when what the challenge is about is simply following the pattern and producing identically shaped garments.

loved Charlotte's duvet cover dress. There was something about the pattern of that duvet cover that just made it look very cool.

I disliked it because of the duvet pattern :o I thought the pattern was all wrong for the dress.

I do think that challenge was not so much about having a nice garment at the end but looking at how different they could be and how they could add lots of texture and structure into the garment. More about the techniques rather than the finished product.

Roussette · 30/06/2016 07:33

I thought Tracy's final dress was dire.. red with a huge bow on the back which Patrick seemed to ignore!

I also didn't really get the garment of the week but maybe it was because it was white and close up it looked good, to me it just looked a bit weird, one sleeved with bits hanging off but what do I know!

SoupDragon · 30/06/2016 07:35

I wondered why no one commented on the tails of Tracey's now being way longer than the skirt.

SoupDragon · 30/06/2016 07:52

Not sure what that random "now" is doing there!

Elendon · 30/06/2016 08:54

Lurked on this thread and now commenting to say that I agree with Fontella. I don't care who wins next week, they are all excellent. This has been such a delightful series to watch. All those who took part have been good. Off now to buy some of the books, I still hanker for the Apron Dress from the last series.

Roussette · 30/06/2016 10:34

Here is what we can look forward to for the Final.

Won't say what it is in case people like to be surprised, but think it's going to be great, and anyone can win.

jay55 · 30/06/2016 11:13

I think jade has stormed through the field and taken the most on board. I'd like to see her win because of how much she's improved.
That said I do like Charlottes clothes, in terms of them being pretty and wearable.

I wonder if Joyce had had a younger model if she'd have tailored things better. She's been very entertaining though.

RueDeWakening · 30/06/2016 15:45

I was trying to comment on this earlier this week, but the app had other ideas!

I'm backing Jade to win (plus she replied to one of my tweets so now I

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 30/06/2016 19:19

I think next week may actually come down to the first two rounds -- assuming the final challenge is evening dresses then I would expect all three to do very well as it suits all of their sewing styles, but I wouldn't be surprised if something a bit off-the-wall gets thrown in on the pattern and alteration challenges.

AnnieNoMouse · 01/07/2016 16:35

I noticed in John Lewis that they are selling the Vogue pattern for the YSL Mondrian dress (in the Sewing Bee section). I couldn't quite work out whether you needed to buy a separate pattern to go with it, because it called itself a Vogue "hack" for another Vogue pattern - and felt quite light for a whole dress pattern.
I also had a look at the SB book - and that also has a pattern for their version of the Mondrian dress - I am tempted to buy it. Haven't bought any of the others.

TheSilveryPussycat · 01/07/2016 16:42

Oh I wanted the Apron Dress too. I'm wondering if my local alteration place might point me in the right direction for finding someone. (I think round here some of them were set up by women who had been working in the garment industry... am in NE, and over the years as mining went, the women supported their families this way, till it too went...)

dillite · 04/07/2016 21:28

Are we all ready for tonight?

SoupDragon · 04/07/2016 21:28
Roussette · 04/07/2016 21:31

Here we go then!

SoupDragon · 04/07/2016 21:35

Rows of pin tucks. Gulp.

dillite · 04/07/2016 21:37

Joyce must have had her daughter very young.

I hate plackets. They are a pain in the arse.
