A new 5-part thriller is starting on BBC 2, 9th November at 9pm

A romance between an MI6 code genius and an ordinary man promises happiness. But tragedy strikes when the spy dies in suspicious circumstances, forcing his lover to pursue the truth behind his death.

Have a look at the trailers and write-ups and see if you fancy watching it and joining in this MN thread.

''You might be the most innocent person I know'' - This is a clip from episode 1: On a walk by the sea, Danny flirtatiously questions whether Alex did background checks on him before going on their date.

I thought Danny was a honey trap agent too. But the sense of him falling in love seemed to be being played for 'real' - Oh! too many questions! Anyone got an advanced copy of next week's ep. pretty purlease?

JustCallMeDory · 11/11/2015 13:42

onlylovers it's the cheekbones, girl, the cheekbones Blush

Cerseirys · 11/11/2015 13:47

You can look but don't touch ladies, the lovely Ben plays for the other team and is taken!

squoosh · 11/11/2015 13:50

I don't think anyone thinks he's straight!

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 13:51

Like that's ever put anybody off a sleb, ever Grin

I read on scurrilous websites think he used to go out with Hayley Atwell, anyway, so not always/completely gay...

squoosh · 11/11/2015 13:53

I can't fancy gay celebs. My imagination is fertile but also practical. I'd dream up some filthy scenario only to hear a booming imaginary voice say 'he wouldn't like that you know'.

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 14:08

I don't think I DO fancy any apart from Ben.

It doesn't seem to matter to my imagination.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/11/2015 14:21

We went to see Spectre on Monday so it was very odd catching up with this on Tuesday. Grin He's a bit different as Q.

JustCallMeDory · 11/11/2015 17:40

onlylovers of course - I'd forgotten about the 'must change my battery' thing.

The80sweregreat · 12/11/2015 14:37

I loved this, Jim Broadbent is one of my fav actors and Ben Wishaw looked liked a young David Essex! I know it was slow and a bit dark in place, but i am hooked! Who was 'Alex' ? ( or Scottie, come to that ) !

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/11/2015 15:33

Not only 'must change my battery' but:

Short, rather portentous pause
Turns up volume on radio
'Must change my battery'

Classic 'we're being bugged, I must try to make it difficult for them to hear this' behaviour - or at least it was in ye olden spy thrillers.

KurriKurri · 12/11/2015 15:44

onlylovers - not sure about the toning up - I saw Ben W in Bakkhai in August and he looked thin as a rake - clothes hanging off him, no belly I could see (and I was looking closely Grin) You are right he exuded sexual energy in that performance - it was brilliant. He had some very good hair going on too Grin

I wonder how long ago this spy thing was filmed?

OnlyLovers · 12/11/2015 16:15

Kurri, really? I thought he was quite soft in the belly, certainly in the dress, although I agree the first outfit (drapy T-shirt and low-hanging trews) did hang off him a bit. I didn't like the long hair much, I have to say, although I liked how he preened and played with it.

Don't know at what point they filmed London Spy, but I read an on-location interview with Ben and others where he was holding a hot-water bottle, so maybe this winter or early spring, before Bakkhai?

MitzyLeFrouf · 12/11/2015 16:24

I'm picturing you both, opera glasses in hand! Grin

London Spy starts on BBC Two - Monday 9 November - 9pm
KurriKurri · 12/11/2015 16:30

Grin Mitzy.

Onlylovers may have been wishful thinking on my part - I can easily overlook a belly if I choose to Grin But yes I was thinking in those low trews he looked skinny. He's a very slightly built chap generally though.

JustCallMeDory · 12/11/2015 17:50

I, ahem, had reason to watch it again but only to pick up on the bits DH talked over honest and, alongside having missed the turned up radio - definitely we're being bugged behavior - I can confirm that there. are. no. black. pants.

Although there is a strong, dark shadow at one point. Blush

OnlyLovers · 13/11/2015 12:37

Mitzy, how DID you get hold of that pic of me? Grin

In fact I didn't need my opera glasses – I was right at the front all three times.

Dory, I'm convinced there were black pants in the sex scene!

OnlyLovers · 13/11/2015 12:38

PS, slight derail but I meant to say I went to see The Lobster and GOOD HEAVENS Ben looks handsome with shorter hair!

LocalFilms · 16/11/2015 18:07

My 15 year old daughter is mad about Ben Whishaw so we watched the first episode together. I found the gay sex scene and the sex toy drawer a little strong but I still want to watch with her. What does everyone else think? Educational or too much too soon?

OnlyLovers · 16/11/2015 18:12

Disclaimer: I don't have children or much contact with them BUT I'd say that the sex scene was shown in the context of love, respect, understanding and communication. Much more sensitive and positive than a lot of the sex we see on TV, IMO.

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/11/2015 20:44

Was The Lobster any good Only? I liked the sound of it.

Checking in for tonight's deconstruction which helps me understand it better

AppleYumYum · 16/11/2015 21:06

Checking in too, really drawn in by last week's episode, was beautifully put together...

Gruach · 16/11/2015 21:20

Ahhhh ... Here you all are.

I watched part 1 of this yesterday and cannot wait for 10 pm and iplayer for part 2.

Echoing every good thing said about Ben Wishaw (I'm another fan of the cool, quicksilvery, consumptive look.)

Surely the coming episodes will cover the eight months that were skipped over in part 1? So we'll discover how Danny picked up his rapid, spookery skills. I had the impression (via the Guardian) that the thing in the phone was a bug.

Such a shame my tiny phone screen hinders the scrutiny of strong, dark shadows ...

I wouldn't say Alex's his mother was overly generous with the hugs.

That warehouse where he hid the microchip thingy with a notebook. Did we see that last week? Seems an odd hiding place. And we don't know what was on the chip! And now there's another chip, a sweetie chip. Which was also put away without further investigation!

I thought Fake Dad was going to try and kill him.

And I think the MI5 woman he had the coffee with after the interview stuck a monitoring device on his lapel.
