A new 5-part thriller is starting on BBC 2, 9th November at 9pm

A romance between an MI6 code genius and an ordinary man promises happiness. But tragedy strikes when the spy dies in suspicious circumstances, forcing his lover to pursue the truth behind his death.

Have a look at the trailers and write-ups and see if you fancy watching it and joining in this MN thread.

''You might be the most innocent person I know'' - This is a clip from episode 1: On a walk by the sea, Danny flirtatiously questions whether Alex did background checks on him before going on their date.

I wonder if Scottie knew about Alex's toy cupboard antics.

PseudoBadger · 10/11/2015 22:01

That was all planted surely Confused

MajesticWhine · 10/11/2015 22:09

I have no idea what's going on, but I thought it was very attractive to watch and I got drawn into watching it without really meaning to.

JustCallMeDory · 10/11/2015 22:38

Pseudo the keys were for 'Alex's' (getting lost in quotation marks /apostrophes here) flat. Or did I miss something?

Can anyone tell me why Danny suddenly thought to look int he back of the laptop for something - or did he find the thing he swallowed in the music box?

MissWimpyDimple · 10/11/2015 22:42

Do we know for sure that the body was 'Alex'? I'm a bit slow on the uptake in these things doesn't help that I always have one eye on the ipad.

I also missed what the thing was that he swallowed. When he was unwrapping it it looked like cling film.

I'm not really getting this am I Confused

TheSpottedZebra · 10/11/2015 22:59

Dory I think he knocked the phone, and found a - thing (external hard drive? Sim?), and that made him think to return to the laptop, look in the battery compartment, and find a different thing. And that thing contained some film which of of course all codey and spy-tastic.

But he's presented as an innocent, isn't he? Yet at the beginning, when he'd first met him, he was really strategic about tracking him down again, almost like he was reeling in an agent. And then he seemed to know the right thing to say, how to play him. And then the keys, he seemed to k ow exactly what to do. And then he found the canister AND SWALLOWED IT like he'd been at the scene of a million and one crime scenes. So I say hmmm to him. A bit.

Maybe Scottie had deployed him as a kind of honey trap in the past? Or maybe Danny's a agent too?

SoupDragon · 11/11/2015 07:18

I missed the opening few minutes and I thought Danny was the spy and Alex the target at the beginning.

laplumeofmyaunt · 11/11/2015 08:00

Really enjoyed this. IMDB have Ed Holcroft listed in all 5 eps so whether we see more of him in flashback or he's not really dead, who knows?

Love Ben Whishaw - amazing actor and he looks like Brian Cox!

Cerseirys · 11/11/2015 08:26

Hehe, are you Ben Whishaw or his agent OP?? Grin

Watched it last night. Bit slow at first but v good and am intrigued to find out what happens next. Must've been deja vu for Ben to be looking up longingly at the MI6 building!

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 09:14

I watched it last night too. Thought it was beautifully shot, stylish but not afraid to show 'grubby' parts of London.

Excellent acting apart from Alex; I can understand why he'd fall for Danny, who's a live wire, endearing, and heartbreakingly eager to be in love, but I don't really get how Danny would fall in love with him. I thought he was a charisma/interest vacuum.

No, I don't think Danny knew Alex was a spy. He told the police in all innocence that he was an investment banker.

He knew to look in the laptop because when he suggested going away for the weekend, Alex said very meaningfully, 'I need to change my laptop battery before I go – it's important' or words to that effect.

I think he knew to swallow it because he's watched spy dramas, just like the rest of us! Also, he has a slightly dodgy or at least very druggy past and has quite possibly smuggled drugs around and into clubs etc. I'd imagine he's no stranger to being furtive; but I don't think he has a background in spying.

Apparently Ofcom are investigating the show because there have been thirteen complaints about the 'explicit' Confused 'gay' Confused sex. People really need to get lives. The sex wasn't particularly explicit and was in a context of love and compassion. I thought it was believable, very touching and not at all titillating.

Cerseirys · 11/11/2015 09:38

Was it ever established that Alex/Alastair was the body in the trunk?

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 09:54

No, not explicitly, but the police questioning Danny about Alex suggests that it is – well, certainly that we're MEANT to think that it is... It could still not be him, I guess.

PseudoBadger · 11/11/2015 09:55

"No, I don't think Danny knew Alex was a spy. He told the police in all innocence that he was an investment banker."

So why all the comments between them about "I know your work is secret", "tell me your real name", "they would use someone like you to get to me" etc?

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 10:00

"they would use someone like you to get to me" etc?

Oh, I missed that line. Blush

But the others – I thought Danny was just accepting what Alex told him about his banking work being confidential. I'm quite probably wrong, though!

So, how are we the viewer going to be shown that Danny knew Alex was a spy? Flashbacks and explicatory monologues?

PseudoBadger · 11/11/2015 10:04

I'll give you the confidential bit for the codes related to bank work. I'm at work now, but I'm sure when they were on their walk, or maybe the bath/bed scene they have a conversation with the above words which made me sure that Danny knew.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2015 10:16

I know your work is secret

DS1 did work experience for an investment company and he had to sign a non disclosure agreement so there is an element of secrecy.

givemushypeasachance · 11/11/2015 10:38

Re the 13 complaints about the explicit and gratuitous sex - Gay Times has looked into those claims and contacted Ofcom direct, and Ofcom told them they've only received one complaint. Huh, not like reputable news organisations such as The Sun and The Fail to make shit up for outrage-stirring purposes, is it?

Frankly I think if they were going to lie they should have gone bigger - claimed hundreds of people complained, someone fainted...

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 10:42

give, really? How pathetic of the papers.

And I agree, thirteen is a paltry number to make up if you're going to make one up. A missed opportunity. Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 11/11/2015 10:42

13 complaints is nothing!

89 complaints were received about 1 episode of BGT, saying that the women's neck lines were too low.

squoosh · 11/11/2015 10:43

13 complaints is brilliant. 20 years ago the Ofcom lines would have gone into absolute meltdown. For days!

squoosh · 11/11/2015 10:44

13 being the 'massaged' figure is even better!

TheSpottedZebra · 11/11/2015 10:45

12 of those complaints would have come in anyway just because 2 chaps were on a beach together.

squoosh · 11/11/2015 10:47

givemushypeasachance · 11/11/2015 11:14

Gay Times article about it here.

I'm guessing the headlines wouldn't look so good where it's just "one person thought the gay sex scenes were too much/gratuitous". Not that 13 would be terribly more significant either!

OnlyLovers · 11/11/2015 11:18

Thanks for the article, give.

Honestly, hack 'journalism' isn't what it used to be...
