A new 5-part thriller is starting on BBC 2, 9th November at 9pm

A romance between an MI6 code genius and an ordinary man promises happiness. But tragedy strikes when the spy dies in suspicious circumstances, forcing his lover to pursue the truth behind his death.

Have a look at the trailers and write-ups and see if you fancy watching it and joining in this MN thread.

''You might be the most innocent person I know'' - This is a clip from episode 1: On a walk by the sea, Danny flirtatiously questions whether Alex did background checks on him before going on their date.

Perfect sum-up Only

I'll miss it and Alex's gorgeous cheekbones too.

Well. I'm listening to an article on PM (R4) about Facial Recognition CCTV. And something called Facewatch which will send alerts.

It's to be used in shops and the technology will probably be overseen by robots.

Who will automatically zap supposed miscreants on sight. Maybe. They didn't actually say that but the rest is true.

Wasn't that something they used in "you me and the apocalypse"? Not that I spend all my time watching TV Blush

Really interesting Q&A with the writer in the Guardian today

"The big question wasn’t who killed Alex or anything about the spy world. It was whether their love story was real: did Alex really love Danny? That was the key revelation. If I’d moved into something topical like real-world terrorism, what would that have had to do with their relationship? That would have no resonance beyond being the thing that killed his lover."

"I don’t have any desire to explore the real-world spy consequences of what was going on. It was a relationship drama refracted through the prism of the spy genre. Once Danny had learnt that his love story was real – which was the key question to answer, for me – and re-evaluated his relationship with Scottie [Jim Broadbent] through this world, it was whether to close everything off or decide he’d found someone new and gone on this new adventure."

Before everyone cries out Zombie ! I am well aware this is a Zombie thread but unlike all the quite frankly bizarre reanimations of late, this one is a deliberate call-out to all the viewers on this thread. Plus Flowers for the fascinating comments and links.

I just binge-watched this on the net of flix and I know Ben Paddington got BAFTA nomination as did the series for best mini series even if it won neither. I also did enjoy it, I did and I get it was meant to be an exp!oration of lies/truth in relationships but I just don't understand the plot holes.

  1. Six Intel agencies agree that Alex's project is a threat to their countries' leaders all being able to flat out lie on TV as it detects lies simply from speech patterns instead of the usual being hooked up to detector for heart rate et cetera.
  2. But Mi6 already have the project and the technology to use on its inventor.
  3. They wish to discredit the spy hence the sex gimp get-up and grisly demise.
  4. Danny is intended fall guy/patsy.

So....

  1. Why did we only see one Intel agency, presumably the CIA, challenge Danny. Why weren't five of them trying to steal the project? Why were they still using iris/pupil scanning in conjunction with speech recognition?
  2. So why the need to kill Alex? To stop the other five agencies getting their mitts on it? And if so, why let Danny live? They did not know he even had the project at first? Why was Alex's laptop left out?
  3. Did they actually inject Danny with HIV or did Alex not practise safe sex the one time with escort?
  4. So why the U-turn? Why did they not just let him take the fall?

Adrian Lester. What was the point of him?ConfusedGrin
Frances. Why have her ask him the questions in the trunk?
Why did special branch let them cheese it in the car at the end?
Why was she left alive/watched over if they thought she could whistleblow?

I wish the writers of Spooks had been allowed at it to script edit and Kudos had produced it.
I wish Alex had ended up being able to give credence to 9/11 "truthers" or some such instead of the truth pattern.
I wish Danny had either been killed along with the two profs or that Alex was alive protecting him (or as someone said even found to be trapped in that crappy maths room although I did like the twist of being hoisted on his own petard).

If the writer had not wanted a second series why oh why did he write the Thelma and Louise ending?
