ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

Deux

I've enjoyed reading this thread

That's good to know! We are keeping on top of the clues I think - usually one or the other of us spots the relevant scenes so we are able to put it all together. And I love the speculation/guesses.

I can't start posting the flashback screenshots I have got until about 6pm tonight when my last 24hours is up! (MN only allows 6 pictures per day) Lizzie's are worth waiting for though.

Ah, just catching up with this. sadwidow thanks for all the screen shots and info. Lots of different threads of narrative to bring in. I am wondering who was Jimmy's girlfriend? Jo-jo? The key belonged to a car registered to the Fenwicks? (Or have I misunderstood that... ) Frankie C/Sir Philip was their driver... I think they all know something, that's why they won't say. Looking forward to next episode.

Trying very hard to keep myself from muddling up with From Darkness: also dug up skeletons, and River: also Nicola Walker.

fuzzpig · 17/10/2015 15:46

I haven't watched episode 2 yet. Quirky I'm also watching From Darkness and River. It seems crime dramas are like buses. [cliche alert]

quirkychick · 17/10/2015 15:50

Hi fuzzpig I haven't watched any crime drama for a while but am ready for it now. Episode 2 is good, drawing in the different threads from last week, how those characters are all part of Jimmy's story.

Elendon · 17/10/2015 15:57

I think Jo Jo was Frankie Cross's girlfriend.

The80sweregreat · 17/10/2015 16:10

She might have been Elebdon, or the Rev's girlfiend? He phoned her from Southend pier.

sadwidow28 · 17/10/2015 16:30

Yay! Mumsnet says I can post pictures again!

I have 3 pictures for each of our 4 protagonists as they were shown Jimmy's photo.

Beth Laws/ Lizzie Walton is up first

You get 6 pictures in 24 hours (acc to Maryz, who knoweth all) and not per day, iykwim. So 6 pics for 24 hrs from the time of the first one.

sadwidow28 · 17/10/2015 17:42

Yes, Fiderer I am figuring out what 'per day' means in Mumsnet terms. I haven't posted many pictures before - so I haven't been alert to the rules of MN.

But we are fine! It will take me 2 days to finish posting the flash-backs.

I have screen-grabbed 3 per protagonist. Father Rob may cause a 'trigger' so I will have to remember to send a signal to say so.

Putting all the flashbacks together, Jimmy did NOT have a happy life in London. But I agree with DCI Cassie, if a historical case affects anyone who is still alive, then it must be pursued.

Yay! I have another 3 photo slots to use!

I will upload the 3 flashbacks I have for Frankie C (Sir Phillip Cross - recently appointed 'czar of entrepreneurs' )

Love this. Wonder what the writers would make of our dissection Wink

sadwidow28 · 17/10/2015 21:04

Okay, there are some questions posed and I don't know the answers:

(1) Is Jo-Jo the girlfriend of:

  • Jimmy
  • Frankie C, or
  • Father Rob who is still in touch by phone?

(2) The car key belonged to a car registered to the Fenwicks?

I can't answer question (1) at this time - no clues.

However, we have explored question (2) since episode 1. Cassie agreed that if the forensic scientists could find the key number, leading to the car, and therefore the owner - that would be "rather cool".

Key No: MS 1165174

At the car showroom we learn:

MS = Morton Spyder

1165 = Month and year of manufacture so .... November 1965

174 = Number assigned to car as it rolled off the production line.

The car was sold as a direct-sale from the factory - 12th January 1966

Reg: 775 UCC

Sold to a Stephen J White (DVLA confirms that S White is only reg owner)

The very frail Mrs White is visited - she says that the car was stolen and never recovered. Stolen from outside the house - Christmas 1975

The car was bought as scrap from Islington Car Pound in 1977 (a police pound). It was an 'unclaimed vehicle towed off the streets'.

DS Sunny asked why it was never returned to the owner.... "Human error - maybe?" is the salvager's answer. "No computers back then. Much harder to cross-reference things."

It was kept for spares until '91 and then it was sold to Steve Bennett. It was a restoration job by that stage.

Address: Steve Bennett, Midwinter Copse, Hazlemere, Surrey, KT18 9HC

The car is a shell, but as Cassie and Sunny are leaving the scrapyard, Sunny spots the distinct tyres of the Mortan Spyder in a trailer. Steve Bennett's son had stripped some parts off the car. When Cassie spotted the BOAC bag, the son recalls that he found it under the spare wheel in the wheel well.

The BOAC bag contains:

  • a shirt
  • a comb
  • toothpaste
  • a 1976 diary

--------------

I can't find the link from the car to Fenwicks yet.

But I am now alerted Wink

SuckingEggs Shall I tweet our MN link to a journalist?

I bet we can tell them a thing or two (ROFL)

Just found this thread. Loving it (programme and thread). Seeing all the flashbacks in episode 2 I'm predicting they will all have somehow had a hand in it. (Isn't there an Agatha Christie that's a bit like that?)

sadwidow28 · 17/10/2015 22:20

Look at the 3rd flashback screen-catch for Frankie C:

We are looking for someone who wears a watch on the right wrist. (I have checked Sir Phillip in episode 1 ..... no sign of a watch on either wrist so far.)

Keep your eyes peeled on Tuesday night folks!

I am posting a reminder to myself:

On page 4 of this thread, The80sweregreat said:

the opening credits show flashes of fire and matches

I need to get some screenshots of the opening credits because there might be clues under our noses that we would have missed with The80s saying what she did so early on.

Page 5 of this thread, we couldn't answer a question:

miaowroar Tue 13-Oct-15 12:29:26

OK - this has been puzzling me. Why is it Unforgotten? Isn't that the same as "remembered"?

I think episode 2 explained the title. Jimmy has been deliberately FORGOTTEN since 1976 - even the police dealing with the MissPer case (Missing Person) noted his parents as alcoholic and he was 'coffee-coloured'. Jimmy was put out of the minds of the protagonists and the 70's police (forgotten).

When the photo of Jimmy is shown to Frankie C (Sir Phillip) and Beth Laws (Lizzie Wilton) they deny knowing him. Father Rob gets a tip from the bishop that the police want to speak to him about an historical case; and Eric Slater sees the article in the newspaper. They each have 'flashbacks' - so the new police inquiry means that Jimmy Sullivan is now UNFORGOTTEN.

Does that make sense?

On page 7 of the thread, The80sweregreat said:

Unless its possible child abuse, which i doubt now

I am doing an early warning that the flashbacks from Father Rob suggest under-age male sex/child abuse of Jimmy - but not clear by whom.

I will try to remember to put a trigger warning on the post when I upload the screenshots.

Can I join?

just watched the whole three episodes on catch up, is Philip Cross supposed to be Alan sugar???

sadwidow28 · 18/10/2015 08:43

Christinayangstwistedsista

Oh we would love you to join in - welcome!

The more hands we have on deck to crack this case the better. We are determined to crack it ourselves before episode 6 (final episode) and we keep getting well in front of the clues.

We had made the connection between Frankie C (Sir Phillip) and Beth Laws (Lizzie Wilton) before episode 2 when the detectives caught up with us.

Sir Phillip Cross (about to be elevated to the Lords as entrepreneur czar - Lord Cross of Frogmore) is a believable character as a 'lowly London boy made good' through entrepreneurial skills/talents. Some characteristics have been drawn from the real life story of Lord Sugar who is now Baron Sugar of Clapton in the London Borough of Hackney. However, there is no suggestion that Lord Sugar has ever been involved with criminal gangs as Sir Phillip has been. Sir Phillip was a driver for the Fenwicks (and they appear to be based on the Kray twins - Ronnie and Reggie - who virtually ran 'Saarf Lundon' with protection rackets, intimidation and prostitution).

Background to the Kray Twins - perhaps the Fenwicks are based on these men

OP posts:
Fiderer · 18/10/2015 08:50

Lord Cross of Frogmore sounds like a character from Blackadder.

Elendon · 18/10/2015 09:05

LillianGish I was thinking that too, I'm guessing "And then there were none."

The premise to this excellent series is very Agatha Christie, I think.

Elendon · 18/10/2015 09:11

Jimmy said in a letter to his mum he'd bought a new car (with a picture that looks just like the spider) and that he had a new girlfriend.

I think Jimmy is being economical with the truth here on both counts. His car might have been a 'present' from the Fenwicks and his 'girlfriend' might well have been a sex worker (and Jimmy the pimp?). Certainly, Frankie and Rob know Jo Jo. Father Rob might well be supporting her 'exit'.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 18/10/2015 10:26

Who gave the man 50 pounds towards his house?
