ITV’s six episode thriller series Unforgotten from former ITV drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes’ fledgling indie Mainstreet Pictures will premiere on Thursday October 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

Penned by Undeniable scribe Chris Lang, Unforgotten tells the story of an 39 year old cold investigation into the murder of a boy who was killed in 1976. The modern day investigation is run by DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, who must re-examine the evidence and investigate the key suspects – Robert Greaves, Frank Philip Cross, Lizzie Wilton and Eric Slater – in order to close the case. The series utilises a multi-stranded narrative, set in different parts of the country, which explores and connects each of the principle characters.

The six-parter is produced by Mainstreet Pictures and features a large cast that includes Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars), Nicola Walker (Last Tango In Halifax), Trevor Eve (Waking The Dead), Bernard Hill (The Grid), Ruth Sheen (Our Girl), Tom Courtenay (The Dresser), Gemma Jones (Marvellous), Brian Bovell (Death in Paradise), Cherie Lunghi (Casualty), Hannah Gordon (Hustle), Claire Goose (Mount Pleasant) Tamzin Malleson (Midsomer Murders), Peter Egan (Downton Abbey), and Frances Tomelty (Catastrophe). Ripper Street helmer Andy Wilson was the director.

Cassie's dad was giving her Looks I thought when she talked about historical cases and how the past is still important.

What made him give her the letters may have been her comment re Jimmy's mum, how she'd told Cassie she lost her son and was no one. It was that evening I think.

Fiderer

You are correct - I got the names of two wives mixed up:

  • Father Robert Greaves (Bernard Hill) is married to Grace (Hannah Gordon). He has two daughters, Caroline (Tamzin Malleson) and Ellie (Claire Goose).
  • Eric Slater (Tom Courtney) is married to Claire (Gemma Jones). They have 2 sons, Les the caring son (Dominic Power) and Matt the 'posh one' (Adam Astill)
  • Sir Phillip Cross (Trevor Eve) is married to Shirley (Cherie Lunghi). They have 2 children: Josh (Tom Austen) who is an entrepreneur like his father and Bella who is a Barrister (Zoe Telford).

Unless its possible child abuse

I posted an interview with Chris Lang (writer) and he said it is NOT a child abuse story. I'll repost it again here for new fans:

I am waiting for someone to mention just how hot 1976 was! From june to mid august it was positively baking compared to normal brit summers

Flipping 'eck - you are so right!

I was in my 3rd year of teacher training and we had our 'Certificate Ball' coming up - we'd all qualified. I had made all the dresses for the girls with a bit of decolletage showing and bare arms (I was the seamstress of the college) so we were trying to get a sun-tan on the front lawn. The nuns were horrified to see the 'gals in bikinis lying prostrate like prostitutes' Grin

Three nuns came out to tell us to cover up and remember we were 'ladies'!

I ran back to my student room very quickly as I was staying on for a 4th year to do my degree. The others took great pleasure in telling the nuns that they were no longer in charge of them.

Well, didn't THAT break a memory.

I think the nuns were jealous as they couldn't strip off their habits and cool down Wink and they were walking around like little greasy monkies!

I am sure DS sunny said ' cassie is driving up to liverpool' then we saw her on the train. Dh said i was wrong!

You are quite correct The80sweregreat. DS Sunny did indeed say she was driving up to Liverpool [4.26 of episode 2] However, I believe that HR got wind of her using her own car @35p per mile and said that a train was cheaper Grin

Now, I have another anomaly. The character background information (different sites) is very confusing. Some say Sunny is a DS (and the credits also confirm this). Other sites say he is a DI.

Now look at the fax letter to Sunny and tell me what you see!

Blimey sadwidow Sterling work Grin Make sure you're around for any other detective series.

Oh and spy ones. They're usually very tricky and we need all hands on deck.

Fiderer · 16/10/2015 17:14

And if you feel like a change of username at any time, detectivewidow may be appropriate. Cos bloody hell, you're good Grin

Elendon · 16/10/2015 17:18

What a super second episode and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Finding a skeleton to begin with and then questioning everyone who seems to have a skeleton in the cupboard. It's an excellent premise to what seems to be a high quality drama. And all those involved in the production are top class.

This second episode focussed on the beat/info, searching/questioning part of police procedure and it was done so well.

As well as that, the social implications of a past misspent brought to the fore in the future.

Can't wait for next week.

Elendon · 16/10/2015 17:25

Oh good call on the heatwave of 76. My sister was a young student nurse in London then. She loved the nightlife and said everyone was out and about because staying indoors made you so hot. We felt the heat back in Norn Iron. She reported then that the heat in London was practically unbearable.

FawnDrench · 16/10/2015 18:02

Re. the letters left for Cassie to read - they are signed from "Clive" I think. But her fathers name is Martin according to IMBD. That's if I read it correctly.

sadwidow28 · 16/10/2015 18:13

Thank you kind Fiderer

I love a well written drama series and, IMO, Chris Lang has done such a good job that I will follow the clues.

(I haven't got Chris Lang on Twitter - but am in contact with the author of Safe House so we could have fun when we get that series 2 Grin )

FawnDrench is correct - Re. the letters left for Cassie to read - they are signed from "Clive"

I can't think who Clive is yet - perhaps we haven't been told.

Now folks, I am only allowed to post 6 pictures per day on Mumsnet and I have the 'flashbacks' saved for 3 characters.

I'll have to upload over the next few days.... okay?

OP posts:
FawnDrench · 16/10/2015 18:47

My guess is that Clive is a "very good friend" of Cassies mother.
Why her father chose this particular time to reveal the letters and by doing so, her mother's relationship with the mysterious Clive I'm not sure...
I'm also not sure that the father is as happy as he seems.
"Don't wait up" or something like that he said as he went out the door.

Shame in a way as I was so pleased the detectives in this series didn't seem to be laden down with the usual stuff, and weren't fighting hidden demons, battling their own psyches or coming to terms with personal tragedy. I hope I'm wrong, and that this isn't a side-story for Cassie.
Surely she has enough on her plate solving the Jimmy murder?

Elendon · 16/10/2015 18:50

Looking forward to those sadwidow or should that be premier detective?

Your posts keep me on this thread. Thanks so much for your hard work. x

Elendon · 16/10/2015 18:55

But life always brings distractions Fawn, and this being a 'reflections' drama, it only seems fitting.

I loved that the policeman put down that Jimmy's mum and dad were alcoholics (she admitted it), and the 'chocolate' colour etc; thereby dismissing her obviously impassioned plea to search for her missing son. The 70s was a time for change but some obviously hadn't read the memo!

The80sweregreat · 16/10/2015 19:12

Well done sad widow! Could be they checked out train fares and decided it was cheaper.
It was a very hot summer 76, i was only 11 and got sunburnt at an outdoor lido! Sunbathing responsibly was unheard of in the UK i think.
I Was in agony. My middle brother got married, but the weather broke towards the end of August so it wasnt too hot in my pink bridesmaid dress!
They married young in the 70s. (Celebrating their 40th anniversary next year! )
So funny about your nuns, they must have boiled. We had never had such sun in years.
Racism was rife, the National front were having marches everywhere. Its often seen as the good times, the 70s, but lots wasnt that good. Lots of social changes too and terrible architecture!
Shame about Cassie's dad.

sadwidow28 · 16/10/2015 19:59

Fiderer

I had to check out the name of the woman who is the Administrator of the Community Centre/Group. It is SHEILA (Tessa Peake-Jones)

I don't think we have to worry about her - she has done her 2 episodes:

'76... Aah, I remember the drought and large cracks in dry, dry earth. So evocative. And I remember the racism and unrest. It was a time of edgy energy.

Am bloody loving this series - it's like a great book - you want to know what, why, who, etc, but don't want it to end.

Fiderer · 17/10/2015 06:59

widow Ah thanks. Suppose it made it easier for him to ask that it not be mentioned if she's his wife.

Rotter though, putting Sheila through the worry and guilt of the "break-in".

Do we know if he's a gambler or is it a supposition? Cos he could be being blackmailed. Maybe by Jo-Jo and that's why he had her number.

NoahVale · 17/10/2015 09:15

perhaps FAther Greaves is paying someone, still? perhaps it is Jo jo

I've enjoyed reading this thread and just love this series. I started watching that other one on BBC 1 and can't even remember the name of it.

Someone up thread said it reminded them of the Scandi dramas. I so agree.

Talking of Scandi dramas, there's lots coming up this season.

Sadwidow, did you do teacher training at Craiglockhart?

sadwidow28 · 17/10/2015 12:34

No, not Craiglockhart - not even Scotland. The college I went to is now closed down, but we all lived on premises with the nuns (all girls). So the front lawn was effectively the nuns' front lawn also ...... hence the apoplexy when we laid prostrate in our bikinis! When the 3 nuns came out and loomed over us we thought a cloud had passed in front of the sun ..... Talk about shock and horror Grin
