I was hooked from episode 1 through to the end, but yes, I was constantly expecting a twist that just didn't come. I think because it was categorised as a 'psychological drama'... The fact that it was all what it was supposed to be (a woman finding out about her husband's affair) was the scary part for me, I think I was hoping it would all be in her head because really, how many people would even notice a hair on their partner's scarf? And that was the key that got her to find out. I was on her side throughout it all (even the unrealistic parts). But was it just me or was there an element of Simon basically treating her like the one in the wrong, not saying sorry, lying constantly (back when she asked him outright if he was having an affair and he looked genuinely shocked and it made you think he was innocent!) saying "it happens all the time, all men cheat, we're just animals etc" as if that meant Gemma was wrong for being upset! I've not been cheated on (to my knowledge) but there have been so many messages that 'all men cheat' in my life - magazines, peoples opinions, tv dramas! That I am now doubting my own partner and wonder how much I don't know... Feeling mixed!

Roseformeplease

Episode 4 (28:15) - Gemma says to Becky Hughes (Simon's Assistant) "You went on holiday with them".
Becky: "They said they needed me; that they'd be working."
Gemma: "Where did you go?"
Becky: "Kate's dad has a house in France that she could use for friends."
Gemma: "Her dad wasn't there?"
Becky: "No.... They don't know about Simon. He'd kill him if he did."

So I believe the photo WAS of France, but the reference to having an exact replica of the pool in the newly-built UK house was a plot device for Gemma to be able to ask whether the house in France had a name.

I am far too invested in this........... Angry

Oh, nobody likes Gemma, even the women, as she's cold and works too much and doesnt give enough blow jobs, unlike trollopy Kate, and, and men have biological urges, so what could she expect really..even the lady neighbour graciously puts up with her husbands totally understandable urges...writes the middle aged man.
Urrgh. Personally I wouldn't have been able to stop myself decking Kate when she said " why is it women go mad when they get old?" er...Hmm

TheCraicDealer · 07/10/2015 23:09

Yeah I think if Kate's parents where funding anything she would've at least had like a three year old fiesta rather than a ten year old one Grin

Also it was made clear that Gemma was blackmailing the dad, and she could do so so long as he was on the local council. In fact, probably forever because he's probably a prominent local businessman in their incestuous town and he couldn't bear the impact on his rep if it came out.

FrankieLou14, what you described was gas lighting, making out that it's all in the wee woman's head, that she's losing her mind etc; the reality being that Tom was a massive shit.

sadwidow28 · 07/10/2015 23:10

THE writer of hit drama Doctor Foster says he hopes the story of betrayal and revenge will leave women feeling “empowered”.

Tom, a turd that Kate is never going to be able to polish.

LuluJakey1 · 07/10/2015 23:12

I only watched the stupid series because Lucy Mangan LUCY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? gave it a thumbs-up. I can only think that her brain has been infected by Tory Boy

I take it you don't agree with the way I see it then Hullygully!

Hullygully · 07/10/2015 23:15

No, dear heart, I am afraid not

Elendon · 07/10/2015 23:15

Yikes! Simon....

I'm terrible with names. It's late, it's finished and I should to.

BathtimeFunkster · 07/10/2015 23:15

Simon's relationship with Kate was never credible.

She was too young and immature to be the long term mistress of a man like him.

All the "we just clicked" bollocks.

What kind of man was he?

Other than a dishonest liar, we got nothing.

No sense of what he cared about or what kind of a man he was.

and he walked away from his son with a bit of a grin and a shrug and that was it? Like it was not much of a big deal?

Mark Lawson (The Guardian) has written his verdict:

Doctor Foster: Suranne Jones excels in an ending filled with Jacobean sex and lies

The Guardian - 7th October 2015

TheSpottedZebra · 07/10/2015 23:21

What good did Gemma's blackmailing of Neil Stuke character get her? I missed that bit.

SleepyForest · 07/10/2015 23:21

What horrible people they all were. Yuck.

ApricotSorbet99 · 07/10/2015 23:21

So, middle aged man cheats with a very young woman, steals money, lies and ends up punching his wife....but gets to walk into the sunset with a happy smile and a new baby on the way?

Not an emotionally satisfying ending for me. Unrealistic or not, I would like to have seen him in prison for fraud with the young bit in a grimy bedsit - with Gemma on a date with a stunning billionaire.

All a bit meh....except Suranne Jones's acting was really, really something. I smell a BAFTA.
