US OPEN tennis thread- it's the last Grand Slam of the year- who will win?

Obviously, my heart wants Nadal to end a shit year, with a massive (if pretty unlikey) win. But hey, the defending champ is Marin Cilic- so who knows what will happen.Grin But he will face Coric in the first round, which might be tricky.

And Murray has Kyrgios. For a one-time only deal, I am firmly team Murray. The arrogant little Aussie needs to end 2015 with his tail between his legs- and come back next year more contrite. Of course, it has the potential to be as messy and sweary as their other encounters- which will trigger Nick's suspended ban. Here's hoping Grin

Excited to find a US Open thread here - pretty much follow tennis all year round and it's wall to wall then the GSs are on :)

Been one of the best US Opens in years for me. Delighted to see Fognini and Feli Lopez doing so well. The Fognini-Nadal match was one of the best for a long time. Fognini is probably my favourite player because of his supreme talent. Shame about his temperament though it has been a little better this year.
Other favourites on the mens side are Federer, who I hope wins, and Stan the Man.

On the ladies side I'm hoping for, though not expecting, a Halep win. A bit fed up with the Serena domination though don't dislike watching her. Would really appreciate some of the other ladies raising their game a few notches so they can compete. Really enjoyed Jo Konta's run through and like watching Heather Watson too.
Also love watching Hingis with whoever in the doubles.

Waiting patiently for the Fererer-Isner highlights. Both Sky and Eurosport seem to show about five hours of Murray every morning and about half an hour of everybody else Sad. Yes, I know that's an exaggeration Wink

Hi robinia Tennis welcome

Is anyone watching Jo Willy and Cilic? I am in Canada right now so might be watching a different feed than you guys in the UK.

Hotter than hell here, we have the same weather as NYC so I really feel for those players. It's not just the heat, it's the humidity.

We've been in the wilds of the Canadian wilderness for the last 5 days - no wifi, no TV, no mobile signal. At least we had a radio... and a landline...
So happy to be back in civilisation and tennis on the telly Grin

Bloody Eurosport- isn't showing anything tonight. Not even a random junior matchAngry

I love Jo-Willy, but am hoping Cilic wins, for the Goran factor, even if i can't see him Sad

They are showing Venus & Serena warming up for their sisterly quarter final. Hope they don't cut away from the men. We are going out for dinner soonish though.

Yup, Eurosport seems to have given up on the tennis!

Sky is very annoying. Really wanted to see Gasquet/berdych match last night. Was on Sky red button so couldn't record, v annoying

Then today, they said tennis was on Sky 3but it was on 1 (for a time anyway) so I'd recorded football on 3 instead!! Wish they'd sort it out!

Murray was disappointing, wasn't he? Wouldn't stop ranting away at himself... But Anderson was v good, although I find the big serving a bit boring.

Also find Williams domination tiresome now bit can't see anyone else, maybe Azarenka is the only one who has ghost of a chance

I can report that absolutely no one in Canada seems in the least bit upset about Genie Bouchard's withdrawal.

This Tsonga-Cilic match is turning out to be a nail biter!

really pleased for Cilic,( though I would have been for Jo Willy too). I think he has spent the past year being the 'forgotten' slam champion, and has a lot to prove.

glad Deliciano put up a bit of a fight against Djokovic. from Novak's point of view, he must be feeling fairly comfortable right now.

Could I ask - do people think Murray has another Grand Slam win in him?

Report
GrouchyKiwi · 09/09/2015 12:22

I'm not sure, Volcan. I think if he can get his head back into a good space then yes. But he psychs himself out too much, I think.

I agree Murray is his own worst enemy. Whether he will win another slam depends on how strong Djok remains, and the strength of the players coming up. He has the game, and when uninjured, is one of the fittest there is. It's not just the 'young guns' he has to focus on, it's the fact players like Anderson are starting to believe in themselves and causing upsets. And the 'over 30s' club is going from strength to strength.

Of course, I'm not actually a Murray fan, so I am probably not that fussed Grin

Nadal's future, on the other hand, I do care about Sad... and it isn't looking great, atm.

Andy needs to do something about his second serve. Plus, he needs to be more aggressive consistently. When he is aggressive he wins. When he plays tennis as if it is a game of chess it is interesting strategically but makes him vulnerable to slam-dunk players.

I thought Murray might win this, not sure now if he has got another one in him.

I really hope Rafa comes back to his best.

Report
LaVolcan · 09/09/2015 21:26

One more for Murray, maybe, but no more than that.

Nadal - a few more on clay, but no return to the previous form.

Raahh · 09/09/2015 21:34

I, sadly, think you are right LaVolcan

I would LOVE Rafa to 'do a Federer', recover from his 'annus horribilis' and win again. But in my heart, I know he might not. I'm not writing him off- I am just not sure.

What upsets me, is that he has such a phenomenal record, and all the press focus on now is his decline. Sad
