US OPEN tennis thread- it's the last Grand Slam of the year- who will win?

Raahh · 30/08/2015 21:30

Obviously, my heart wants Nadal to end a shit year, with a massive (if pretty unlikey) win. But hey, the defending champ is Marin Cilic- so who knows what will happen.Grin But he will face Coric in the first round, which might be tricky.

And Murray has Kyrgios. For a one-time only deal, I am firmly team Murray. The arrogant little Aussie needs to end 2015 with his tail between his legs- and come back next year more contrite. Of course, it has the potential to be as messy and sweary as their other encounters- which will trigger Nick's suspended ban. Here's hoping Grin

Ferrer lost his first set. Hope he is fully recovered.

Hello!

Was pleased to see Nishikori out. I know nothing about him but have caught the general opinion from these threads. ;)

Supporting Murray, as always, but agree it would be nice to see Rafa do well.

I like your prediction for a sweary match re Kyrgios, Raahh.

Raahh · 01/09/2015 12:25

Hi, Grouchy .

Djok showed his prowess, in his match. But there are still 6 matches before the winner is decidedGrin . Glad to see Ferrer through, and Nadal, by all accounts was ok, despite the loss of a set. I like Coric, though- he is one of my favourites of the young players- even if he looks about 12.

I have no idea why I don't like Nishikori- he's probably very nice.Grin. He just leaves me cold. And he seemed to sneak up from nowhere.

Kyrgios now has Hewitt in his camp. He needs to listen to him. And Murray is no Gasquet in the temperament department, so they do tend to clash. Totally unsporting of me, but I hope Nick shoots himself in the foot with his potty mouth.

Have I missed the Murray match?

I've got Wawrinka (Louis Armstrong) on Sky sports 1 and Troicki (court 11) British Eurosport. Can't see any other channels showing the tennis. Help!!

Raahh · 01/09/2015 22:47

The Murray/Kyrgios match isn't due to start til 7pm (US time) which is midnight here, I think .

Hi Raahh, was hoping there would be a thread for the US Open! Wimbledon seems an age ago now... Thanks for info about Murray match

you're welcome. Tennis

Seems Kyrgios' suspended ban doesn't apply in Grand Slams. That's silly.

Excellent result, though. I always like it when my teams/players have tough matches in the early rounds. I feel that it helps them build resolve. (Although I guess it makes them more tired for later matches.)

Raahh · 02/09/2015 10:48

Well, I'm glad Kyrgios lost- how can the suspended ban not count? Anyway, good to see him out. Kokkinakis retired against Gasquet, but Hewitt is through, and Tomic- so not all gloom and doom for the Aussies Grin.

I am confused today- first day back at school for the dds- but dd2 in reception is still only doing til 11.30 today (when I used to pick her up at 12) And ds doesn't go back until tomorrow. Something is going to go wrongGrin

Let's go Andy, let's go! Love waking up to news of a win. Hoping Rafa has a good run too.

BagelwithButter · 02/09/2015 22:54

Schwartzmann has got the shortest legs I think I've ever seen

So many unforced errors from Rafa, what is going on with him? I know they say it's a loss of confidence, but is that really possible considering his amazing success... are his shorts short enough, Raahh? Grin

Raahh · 03/09/2015 10:52

GrinBagel- his shorts are short enough- of course, if he had just played in his Tommy Hilfiger pants, it would have been even betterGrin

I'm cross that Eurosport didn't show it on the channel I have- and when the live match finished that they were showing, they played a repeat of the Murray match insteadAngry.

But yes, his unforced errors are not great- and he could easily have lost the first set, after having a lead. He will definitely have to up his game before his next match.I think he plays Fognini next- who he has lost to this year I'm sure (but then he seems to be losing to everyoneSad). So, I will have everything crossed.

I was looking at the first round loser yesterday- interesting how many of them were players who had a good Wimbledon run, or played key matches- Dustin Brown, James Ward, Simon. Pospisil was another.

Anyway, I am currently car-less, as my car decided to develop a radiator leak. Not the best timing, with the dcs back and school and stupid reception staggered starts. So, I am sitting here panicking that the taxi won't turn up in time. Grin

Jo's going well! Go girl!

Fantastic result for Jo! I really like Garbine, but think her time will come.

Woah, only just got to turn on tennis, what is happening to Murray?

I hope you get your car back soon - awful timing! No staggered starts in my day just chucked into school at 6 and that was it Smile hope they had a good day

trixymalixy · 03/09/2015 22:10

Gah, so annoyed Eurosport aren't showing the Murray match, watching bedene instead. Not looking like a good night for the Brits though. Sad

Raahh · 03/09/2015 22:17

Bagel- no staggered starts fro me either- i was 3.5 and started full days at the school nursery. My mother was horrified when we moved from Manchester to Stockport, and they would only take dsis for half a day! They all seem to have had an ok start to the term. Long may it continue- or i will have to hit the Wine Grin

I have everything crossed my car will be ok, and not cost a fortune.

Bedene's shirt looks like the shower scene from 'Psycho' in colour.Grin

Murray seems to have remembered why he is there, in the third set.

OP posts:
Raahh · 03/09/2015 23:27

Yup- he has definitely woken up now!

Good for him to have a bit of a scare though. Can't get too complacent. Grin

Nishky · 03/09/2015 23:56

Phew! That was a close one. Hope Murray manages to recover in time for Saturday.

I really should go to bed now......

GrouchyKiwi · 04/09/2015 10:37

Relieved to see that result this morning. Hope his next match is an easy one.

Raahh · 04/09/2015 11:26

I saw bits of the match repeated this morning on Eurosport- I think Murray was really suffering from the heat. It took him a while to get comfortable- by which time Mannarino was fading. And will rue a lost chance.

I wonder if the poster who thought ballgirlboys are exploited (during Wimbledon) by having to pick up germ-ridden towels, was watching? Grin

Raahh · 04/09/2015 20:30

Phew! Cilic is through- he made hard work of it though!
