Hooray! Let's hope that this series is better than the last.
Oh look it's Arya Stark! And more Missy!
And PC's hair is madder than ever!
(And I've found the box of exclamation marks!!!!!)
Let's see Tardis

He still hasn't shot anyone, has he? The Brig did it in Death in Heaven, someone else did it in the Gallifrey episode etc

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 18:26

I really enjoyed the episode and I have been a lifelong fan of the show - I was looking forward to the discussion thread.

However the thread has basically become a discussion on feminism and the patriarchy though in relation to the show. I'm not a feminist and am a little gutted that it has all been derailed as I am certainly not qualified to discuss it in that context.

CharleyDavidson · 22/09/2015 18:46

I'd enjoy the PC Who if his lines were clearer to hear. Between his low voice and the high volume of the backgroung music, I have quite often struggled to hear the dialogue without turning the vol of the TV up to a volume that makes the sound effects and/or music too loud when it kicks in.

Mindysgotswag · 22/09/2015 18:48

Same thoughts here livia.

BertieBotts · 22/09/2015 19:25

Discuss it any way you like. This thread will likely run for the whole season unless we fill it up! :) Seriously, just plop any old thoughts down, that's how they usually go. Sometimes it waffles on for ages on a discussion about old doctors which I have no idea about so I just skip that bit or add in something about the latest episodes.

I agree BBC has issues with sound management - we had the same last season, didn't we? I was turning it up and down.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 19:44

Fair enough Bertie - I just didn't want to get involved if it was going to become an extension of FWR - there's nothing wrong with FWR but I have already been corrected on this thread for an error I made so I don't want to end up looking a total wanker by trying to discuss things in the context of feminism. Blush

BertieBotts · 22/09/2015 19:53

Eh, just shout ahem and post this link :) Woman takes break from feminism to enjoy TV show

This is a doctor who fan thread so anything and everything doctor-who-fannish is welcome. I think you're more likely to get slammed (good naturedly!) for liking the wrong doctor or episode than for not being interested in feminism. It's all good.

OxfordCommoner · 22/09/2015 19:58

He's going to shoot the hand mines, not Davros. Betcha.

OxfordCommoner · 22/09/2015 20:00

So by saving him as a child he stops him becoming the crazed creator of the daleks by proving the universe is good. Or something.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 20:14

Bertie Grin Can I just post this here then - surely we can all unite behind this?

Weeeeeeuhhhhwooooo! New Dr Who starts 19 September!
Mindysgotswag · 22/09/2015 20:19

Aaaaamen!!!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 20:42

I have been thinking about this and I don't see how he can change Davros' timeline without totally buggering up his own timeline too. Unless he does something like he did in Fires of Pompeii, where his actions cause the Daleks to be created another way.

Hope that makes sense - I may be overthinking it!

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 20:46

Can I flag the "can't save Danny pink" paradox though?

If the doctor exterminates davros - or the Hand mines - with Dalek tech, thereby making davros dead/non evil and the daleks non-existent either way... Doesn't it go all timey wimey??!??

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 20:46

X post livia!

NeedA the Danny paradox was when Clara tried to make the Doctor save Danny by taking him to the volcano and throwing the keys in. The Doctor pointed out that if he saved Danny then they wouldn't be by the volcano and Clara wouldn't be asking the Doctor to save him (slightly garbled version!)

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 21:06

Also Moffat explains the Orson Pink connection here

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 21:21

I have had to download Genesis of the Daleks to try to watch before Saturday - I haven't seen it since it was first shown!

Re: O. Pink - I thought she might be pregnant? Although I might be getting confused. Would be a nice convenient reason for Clara to leave, though, but I'm not sure how long has passed since he died. Hmm. I'm not massively convinced by that cobbled together explanation about it being another branch of the family.

And on a totally unimportant note, Orson Pink is a really stupid name. I thought his name was Awesome Pink when I first heard it :o

I don't really know why they keep going over ground like "destroying all of the daleks for good" - because they've done it, brought them back and they clearly know that daleks and cybermen are such classic Who staples that they can never be totally destroyed. I mean they keep doing all of these weird, meta things to "explain" the daleks. As said earlier, I have barely seen any classic Who but if I'm right they were just straightforward baddies before, right? They didn't open them up and show they are pained beings, they didn't obsess over their civilisation, they didn't go inside one. They were just the bad guys. I might be wrong about that, though.

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 21:34

Yy Bertie. I wish we had more new villains. Did the daleks and the Cybermen pop up every series in the past?

The angels were fantastic first time round, much less convincing in the Angels Take Manhattan episode (because they should have won easily, being so numerous)

ARockNRollNerd · 22/09/2015 21:36

Moffat never let a little thing like making sense stand in the way of a good storyline.

YonicScrewdriver · 22/09/2015 21:40

Yes, I thought Clara might be PG in the Xmas special... But I guess she would know by now, would have known before the end of Death in Heaven (wasn't the boy's reappearance two weeks after and then the doctor was two weeks late to meet her?)

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/09/2015 21:45

Bertie You are right - I started watching the show when Jon Pertwee was the Doctor and yes, they were just evil. They were basically a representation of the Nazis, their only motivation was to kill all other life forms and be the superior species.

I think the Daleks and Cybermen should be used a little more sparingly too. There were so many different monsters in the classic series and now the special effects technology is there to expand it even further. Or even bring back some of the other classic monsters - the Sea Devils would be good!
