The State Within - anyone watching it?

Or more importantly, anyone following it? I've seen all the episodes so far and feel almost as clueless as I did in the first 5 minutes of the series. It's like a more sedate, but just as complicated british 24. Kind of enjoying it though.

Can someone please explain what's going on !!! Am enjoying coz have always like Jason Isaacs but feeling totally thick! Am I or does nobody else understand either . Blubbed when Luke was killed expected him to be saved at the last minute. So who exactly is McIntyre workign for and why?

BoingBoing · 16/11/2006 22:38

Oh good, it's not just me that's totally befuddled. How many more parts are there to go?

The furthest I've got is that it all revolves around the unspellable-place-istan. I'm thinking Luke killed the drunk bloke's wife cos she was hiding the other bloke that they want to have a meeting with. And errrm, that's as far as I've got. Apart from the fact that they're all baddies...except the goodies.... So I'm also feeling extremely dim. Jason Isaacs is a bit of a hottie though, so that keeps me happy.

Wow thanks Majorca - feeling even more thick now!! I've watched the same programmes as you.....! Am desperately trying to convince myself its because I'm a bit deaf at the moment and not catching everything but........

BoingBoing · 16/11/2006 22:52

One thing I remember from the first epi (which DH talked all the way through) was that blondie wants Jason Isaac's job, so that must be going somewhere. Maybe he's actually trying to shaft his boss on this to get both him and Neil Pearson sacked - also not sure what NP's position is here.

And great name Polgara - I read those books years ago.

but are they trying to entice democratic opp leader with unmemorable name to Washington to assassinate him? I think Brocklehurst is a sort of goodie but his squash partner is definitely a baddie.

Majorca - I'm sure that she'll comfort Luke's mother after she's got a little comforting ahem herself.

I think Brocklehurst is a baddie because he had information that could have saved Luke in knowing his connection to the army blokes and he told human rights woman not to tell the ambassador and didn't seem to act on it himself either.

I also think that they might try and assassinate the opp leader using the drunk bloke because they have the murdered woman to hold over him and they also have all the pictures and telephone conversations of him and Mark together.

Oops, was going for a discrete cough ahem there rather than a bold one.

Yes, but Majorca, can you blame her!
Like how nobody calls Ben Daniels by his name, just Blondie - fits don't ya think! Agree that his partner is deffo a baddy not sure about him. Had forgotten about him wanting Jason's job (or maybe just missed it entirely ). Really must concentrate more but dh always manages to interrupt when its on!
BoingBoing - thanks - love David Eddings books, especially the ones with me in!!!

Its all v confusing but quite gripping. Why was Caroline's father targetted in the 1st episode and wasn't blowing a plane up rather a dramatic way to bump him off.
Jason Issacs makes it very pleasant watching.

I'm not sure if I'm more confused than ever now...
I thought the Chinese thing was simply that she didn't want them trading with whatever-istan as that would mean loss of trade to the US.
I'd forgotten about the father being blown up, but my guess is that the plans Brockelhurst (thanks whoever reminded us of his name) nicked must be for some kind of missile thingy. What I can't figure out is how both he and his boyf seem to be working for Mackintyre but neither knows... or am I wrong? And you're right about Neil Pearson. What's he doing there if he's not up to no good - surely they'd have stuck in an actor no-one's heard of?!

As for the human rights lawyer getting a little comfort, I think that was a bit of light relief for us all as the plot is so bloody confusing, not to mention keeping up flagging female interest so we watch again next week.

Hands up who's getting the dvd afterwards to try to figure it all out!

lilibet · 17/11/2006 12:21

i knew someone on here would be watching!!

Isn't it brill? Confusing but brill!

I couldn't beleive that they killed Luke, right up to the very very last second I thought that he would be saved.

What's in the letter that he has left for the woman who shagged Sir Mark?

And I knew that was coming!!

willandsamsmum · 18/11/2006 21:11

I think the letter will have the whole story of what he did for McIntyre, and like someone else suggested, maybe even say that he killed the drunk diplomats wife. McItyre hung up on him which is probably a mistake if the person you hang up knows some awful things about you and is about to be killed - Luke had nothing to lose. I know if that was me I'd write to someone I trusted telling everything.

BoingBoing · 23/11/2006 22:26

This may be a big ask, given how confusing last week's was, but is there any chance someone could fill me in on what happened this week? I caught the last 15 minutes, including the drill (niiiiice), but am none the wiser.

Polgara2 · 23/11/2006 22:36

Well, it's no use asking me - I saw all of it and I'm still confused . Was hoping someone would explain it AGAIN!!!

florenceuk · 23/11/2006 22:49

Spoiler warning!

What can I remember - lawyer went to Luke Gardiner's home, got packet of incriminating evidence which showed CMC mercenaries shooting opposition members + documentary evidence which implicated Warner as head of Armitage at the time hiring mercenaries to carry out said shootings. also showed Asian terrorist who blew up plane in the first episode was really a CMC employee sent off to infiltrate Islamic militant group. Lawyer went to see Brocklehurst who told her not to speak to anybody, esp Sir Mark, as it could bring down all Western governments, and who then went off to plant a tracker device on his boss. Later on he shows the tapes to his lover, and then destroys them, reveals indirectly where they came from, putting lawyer at risk.

Meanwhile Sir Mark welcomed Trygystan opp leader to his residence for secret talks with US. Presence of said leader then leaked to press. Opp leader disappears to meet up with his nephew (Sinclair's son). Sir Mark runs off to find them and Opp Leader promptly assassinated (as predicted by moi last week). Sinclair and son disappear, FBI agent fingers him as prime suspect for helping organise assassinatio. Sir Mark feels very bad but refuses to resign.

Alternatively (and I have only just checked thsi) read plot summary here!

TwoIfBySea · 24/11/2006 21:54

Anyone else wondering in a conspiracy type way, how much of this kind of thing really goes on? I watched a documentary on 9/11 that had some truly mouth-drops-open moments in regards the Pentagon. Now this programme, and then the parallels with what is going on with the poisoned Russian!

Life and fiction, eh?
