The State Within - anyone watching it?

Or more importantly, anyone following it? I've seen all the episodes so far and feel almost as clueless as I did in the first 5 minutes of the series. It's like a more sedate, but just as complicated british 24. Kind of enjoying it though.

MacIntyre got the (now murdered) mercenary out on bail didn't he?

Sir Mark is being bugged and followed so I thought it was probably them that released the news about the oppo leader being in the US and probably them that carried out the assination.

I don't think Brocklehurst is going to be a goodie. He's bugged Marks pen and his phone and kept really important news from him and I don't believe his excuse about protecting Mark either.

I am hoping that Sir Mark will realise what is going on and save the girl and the day because that washington post guy is really annoying!

He did. But when he left she turned around and flew to Florida instead and was spotted by security who informed the Security Services (or whoever) that she was there. It looks like she actually did something whilst in Florida and was heading back to the airport when she was picked up by the bad guys. Smart move to cause a massive road accident to avoid getting tortured & killed though, instead she'll end up in intensive care. Hmmmm.

Of course, all of the above could be total rubbish as I think I've just about given up on trying to work out what on earth's going on. And is Brockelhurst really a good guy watching his boss's arse? My brain is beginning to hurt...

Yes I couldn't work out why she went to Florida - I thought she just sent a postcard to Mark before being abducted though - did she actually get out of the airport?

I think we are meant to believe Brocklehurst is really a "good" guy at least as long as MI6/UK gov and Mark's interests coincide. And why Sinclair co-operated in the first place I couldn't work out at all - even if he thought they were going to promote Esham (?) the business with the prostitute should have told him it was all going wrong. And is his son really Mark's son?

According to plot summary Jane has stashed copies of the video in Florida but of course is now lying in critical care somewhere....

Majorca, thanks for the compliment, but I think that's the only bit I did understand! And here's a stupid question - if she sent Mark a postcard with the phone number on surely a)he would have realised that it was posted in the US and b)it was a US telephone number he was dialling - the lack of +44 would have been a give-away, therefore c)she was not back in Blighty and d)was almost certainly in danger. Ha! Not so clever now, are they?

Well now he's so all-important as Ambassador and all, maybe he's forgotten how to use a telephone or what stamps look like as he has staff to do that for him? I assumed it was her phone no, as he told her to ditch the old one so she couldn't be traced.

willandsamsmum · 03/12/2006 22:50

She wrote the new phone number down for him in the airport before he booked her on the flight to the UK. If she has copies of the tapes, why didn't she mention it in the hotel room? He asked where the tapes were and she said she'd given them to Brocklehurst but didn't mention any copies.

I think the postcard probably says something quite boring such as "have taken detour to florida, will fly to uk from there" She wouldn't have put too much info on a postcard as all his mail would be screened.

I was pretty convinced by Brocklehursts reasons for doing what he's been doing but then was very confused by the conversation he had with his boyfriend afterwards.

I hope George Blake is going to play a major part because she seems very clued up and trustworthy.

Not only a fantasic series but I have developed the hots for Sir Mark.....What will I do after Thursday's finale I can't get a fix watching Harry Potter can I?

Mummymonster · 04/12/2006 13:52

Must say I thought Jane was naive taking the tapes to Brocklehurfst without making a copy first.

And I'm sure therfe is a 'Rolo Tomassi' moments coming that invilves Jane's contact with Brocklehurst's Lover prior to Luke's death.

Dear BBC, please produce a DVD for the xmas market...and do one for State of Play while your at it.

I thought it was very odd that Sir Mark suddenly trusted the hairdresser again, after landing him a punch. Old habits die hard I suppose.

We have to keep pausing and trying to explain the plot to each other in our house. My main contribution each week is "blimey, that bloke from Cutting It is in it up to his neck!!!"

willandsamsmum · 04/12/2006 20:07

Lol at the "Rolo Tomassi" moment! Saw that at the cinema and the whole audience gasped at that moment - no one saw it coming.

BoingBoing · 05/12/2006 08:46

Please excuse my ignorance, but can you explain the "Rolo Tomassi" moment? I can't remember the last time I went to the cinema

WonderCod · 05/12/2006 09:43

ohg od i am close to giving up on it

6beetrootsAmilking · 05/12/2006 09:44

I met the producer the other day and she said that she still didn't get it!

WonderCod · 05/12/2006 09:46

ooh heavy legs mrs Isaac

Mummymonster · 05/12/2006 10:18

Rolo Tomassi...The guy who always gets away with it....

LA Confidential (one of the best, most stylish films ever made and Russell Crowe's finest role but that's a different story) Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) shares with Jack Vincense (Kevin Spacey)How he handled his father's death. Jack mentions it to to the bent cop and when the bent cop then mentions it to Ed, Ed knows what is going on.

I know that sounds really convoluted but I don't want to spoil LA confidential for those who haven't seen it...as an aside, if you haven't ask for it from Santa as you can pick it up in the 3 for 15 quid sales.

Before Luke was put to death, Jane passed some info to Broklehurst or His lover that would have stopped the execution if it got out. (I think). Therefore Jane is the only one who can unlock this key, she is Kevin Spacey. well If she turns up on Thursday.

Majorca...I think I'm running down the same track as you...and as for Jane and ahem...Sir Mark....well death and sex are always so closly linked!

As an aside, while typing this I've just had a 5min conversation with a PA who rang to say a meeting is cancelled about our opinions on Sir Mark and the whole thing! ARRRRGGGGGHHHH we're addicted! God I'm really enjoying this!!

Mummymonster · 05/12/2006 10:32

Thanks Wondercod

And for all those other who need a fix www.imdb.com/name/nm0005042/

BoingBoing · 05/12/2006 10:55

Well if the producer don't get it 6beets, how on earth are we mere mortals supposed to?! Sticking with the Kevin Spacey thing, is it going to be The Ususal Suspects, where you still don't get it at the end having watched it 15 times?
And thanks for the Rolo thing - I understand now
