OK, are we chatting live or do I need to go to Twitter?

Trills · 24/05/2015 21:14

That girl looks too young to be married to anyone.

antimatter · 24/05/2015 21:39

Do you mean Lady Pole.

MrsPeterQuill · 24/05/2015 21:42

Enjoying this a lot more this week.

Not sold on them Marc Warren character though. Who is he supposed to be?

theconstantvacuumer · 24/05/2015 21:43

The Man with the Thistle Down Hair. A sort of fairy king.

MrsPeterQuill · 24/05/2015 21:46

Thank you constant. That helps Smile

antimatter · 24/05/2015 21:48

He is a fairy—"the gentleman with thistle-down hair"

Trills · 24/05/2015 21:51

Indeed, Lady Pole. Looks about 15 don't you think?

Trills · 24/05/2015 21:52

Also it seems very foolish to put things in the mirror if you do not know how to get them out.

antimatter · 24/05/2015 21:56

That magazine was still in the mirror in another scene! Smile

Trills · 24/05/2015 22:02

I much prefer how the Gentleman looked at the auction to his "properly fairy" look.

Could everyone see him then?

antimatter · 24/05/2015 22:08

Only those he allows himself to be seen can see him. (his words I think)

Trills · 24/05/2015 22:12

That makes sense.

Trills · 24/05/2015 22:14

Everyone on Twitter is praising him so much, but I am not feeling it.

He's not putting across strongly enough for me the feeling that he thinks he is doing everyone a favour.

This one feels like he is doing what he wants and doesn't care about anyone else.

In the book it was more that he really thought they enjoyed his presents and his balls.

MrsPeterQuill · 24/05/2015 22:32

Yeah, I'm not feeling that character but that's probably the actor rather than the actual character. Marc Warren just isn't selling it to me.

No problem with anyone else though. Rest of the cast is excellent, although I haven't read the book yet so I don't know it they're playing it true to the original story. And I'm still loving the overall 'look' of everything. It's gorgeously done.

antimatter · 24/05/2015 22:37

I love the details in furniture and the decor. Also the Threedneedle St in the first episode was done very well.

Trills · 24/05/2015 22:50

Everything LOOKS gorgeous. It's nice to just look at it.

Oblique27 · 24/05/2015 23:41

Really enjoyed this week's episode, lovely gothic atmosphere....creepy and menacing, plus big magic!

Igneococcus · 25/05/2015 06:53

He's not putting across strongly enough for me the feeling that he thinks he is doing everyone a favour.
this
dp and I were talking about this as well last night, maybe it will become more obvious as it goes on.
Otherwise I'm very happy with the adaptation. Lovely to see Mr Norrell smiling and opening up a bit, that was beautifully acted.
Lady Pole is nothing as I imagined her when I read the book but I like this interpretation.

Rollermum · 25/05/2015 07:03

Enjoyed this episode even more. I'd forgotten that the Gentleman with Thistledown Hair expected everyone to be grateful, but I think Marc Warren is doing it really well despite this.

SoupDragon · 25/05/2015 07:08

I thought the book was a huge pile of inpenetrable rubbish (and I really really wanted to love it as it is just my sort of thing) but the series is wonderful.

AbsentMindedNumpty · 25/05/2015 07:13

I haven't read the book so wasn't sure what to expect when I watched the first episode last Sunday. I loved it; the atmosphere, the characters, the accents, the setting. Everything fitted. Loving the Mr Norrell character in particular. I get a feeling he's somewhat out of his depth at times and uncomfortable. I shall get a copy of the book for my Kindle, I'm on holiday soon so that'l be something to look forward to.

lucysnowe · 25/05/2015 08:39

That's interesting Trills because I never got that idea of the gentleman from the book. Well kind of that he thinks he's awesome but also that he is v eeeevil and also wants to revenge himself on the magicians. :-) yes thank goodness he got rid of the leafy ensemble for some thing more modern. I like this a lot and it hard to get the Norrell character right but I think they have done really well. Stephen is gorgeous played too. It was quite expositiony tho and I am looking forward to when it al kicks in. Couple of things... I suppose they have missed out all the stuff with George III which is a shame because the madness thing is quite important. Also was anyone else annoyed with the horrible French accent at the beginning?

Well, the book is brilliant. Very well-written, imaginative, and witty. I'm glad that the TV series is making this exceptional story accessible to those who haven't managed to get through the book Smile

Trills · 25/05/2015 09:04

I don't remember the books very well, so I may be wrong, or there may be different interpretations, but I strongly FEEL like the Gentleman thought Lady Pole was having a wonderfu tim, and that Stphen should b super-excited to have his worth recognised.
