Brookside fans thread

I noticed on the other thread that there are a few Brookie fans here. So thought is start a thread.

I still can't believe channel 4 axed it in favour of Big Brother. It was the best soap going. Although it did get a bit weird towards the end. Everyone I know loved Brookside.

I haven't seen that many of the actors in other things, always thought Jimmy Corkhill would do quite well.

Did you know that the houses where they filmed Brookside have now all been sold off and people live in them. Imagine living where the body was under the patio.

I believe that they are all owned by a property developer and Brookside fan, and are rented out. So I guess that there's always the possibility of a resurrection!

Oh wow violet that's a proper connection. My mum ( who was in the credits!) used to be a home help for Paul ushers nan.... grasps at Brookie fame straws.... Fails!

I got 12/19 in the quiz...not too great but I wasn't born until 1992 Grin I used to love brookside though and watched it until pretty much the end. I can also recommend the dvd released a few years ago with the best episodes on- I bought it for my mum's birthday but I've really enjoyed watching it too.

14/19 for me. I didn't know there was a DVD

It really was bonkers at times, but was groundbreaking drama, no subject too difficult to tackle.

hoobygalooby · 22/09/2014 21:12

Oh i loved it.
Especially when Barry pushed Sue and the baby off the roof!
I had a girl crush on Jackie Dixon - I thought she was so cool!!
I wish they would repeat them all!

Oh dear, I'm really upset that I can't remember Annabel Collins!

Yes, they werent a family of caricatures, were they?! Love Brookiecbut was a little damn obvious sometimes.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 22/09/2014 21:59

Doreen Corkhill looks ancient in Cilla.

Loved brookie! You can watch some episodes on 4od. Well last year you could. Me and my brothers always refer to any fella with a scruffy head of hair as a Musgrove. Still! After two decades( nearly) :o

Everyone used to slag sunset beach for its wacky story lines but I believe brookie showed how that was done. For instance...

Jimmy corkhill going from evil drug dealer to beloved and inspirational teacher. (albeit with forged certificates)
Terry forgiving Barry for offing his mrs and baby and becoming bezzies again.
Jacqui Dixon going from pouty teenager to high powered business woman to turkey bastering herself pregnant with max farnhams baby and then to claiming the baby back and then marrying max Farnham (the max Farnham that christened her family "the clampits" when they moved in).
A siege, virus outbreak, several murders, rapes, violent robberies, explosions, mysterious deaths and incompetent window cleaner didn't deter anyone from living there did it?

Vintagejazz · 24/09/2014 12:11

In its early days Brookside moved along at a nice realistic pace and a lot of the drama was character driven. They Jordache story ramped things up and was handled beautifully, but it started to really slide downhill after that. I think I really started to lose interest when it began to turn into the Clare Sweeney show.

ChrissieLatham · 24/09/2014 21:38

Just checked 4od, they've got 2 episodes - the lesbian kiss and the Barry grant roof pushing episode! About to settle down and watch now! Grin

Pyjamaramadrama · 24/09/2014 22:29

There are loads of episodes on youtube too. It's very strange watching them back.

Just had to come out of the shed pay homage to Casa Bevron. I still find myself saying "worrabout me mum, me dad and our Mike" in Jackie Dixon's accent.

The most compelling storyline for me was when Billy Corkhill fell in love with Sheila. There he was with his glamorous wife Do, and dowdy Sheila lived across the way, but there was something about them that made them need to be together.

I remember the line so clearly "I just want to take care of you Sheila!" it was so passionate, and so well played out, over months, not weeks.

Ah, they don't make soaps like that any more.

Labtest7 · 26/09/2014 13:11

MFIC I think his name was Nick. I loved Brookie. One of my prized possessions is a letter from Simon O'Brien received in 1982 in reply to a fan letter I sent him. After Damon died I turned my attentions to Barry.

what about the brother/sister incest storyline? I mean they really went to town on Brookie didn't they? Every taboo subject going. If i remember right the brother and sister ended up living happily ever after together. He was sort of hot i think Blush

orangefusion · 26/09/2014 22:09

"Ar ay, Jimmee, not the drucks again...no more drucks. Pleeeze". Jackie's daily lines had me riveted.

And I am still in love with Barry Grant too. Get to the back of the 'kin kew yous lot
