New thread for the US open.

Am hoping to get round to seeing some of it, but in the meantime, I am limbering up my refresh finger. Grin

Wow! I've been away for the weekend and have clearly missed a lot. Two new GS finalists, who'd have thought it? Great stuff. I really don't mind who wins.

Hope Wozza beats Serena tonight.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 07/09/2014 19:16

they were great matches Drama the commentators kept saying Novak/Roger would/could fight back (not much faith in the opponents!) but they didn't. Tennis

AnyoneForTARDIS · 07/09/2014 19:18

yeah, Wozza for 3 reasons-

1- cant stand Serena, lets see if she throws a tantrum and gets away with it like last time.

2- Rorys been looking a bit smug of late so shed show him ! and

3-she was always getting ribbed for being number one yet never won a GS and want her to prove them wrong too!

oops posted too soon. Novak/Kai match I found very emotional and nostalgic.

If I blurred my eyes I could have sworn I was watching Lendl and Chang in their 1989 Roland Garros match!

JuanPotatoTwo · 08/09/2014 14:30

Wrong person won the ladies final :) Anyone planning to stay up to watch the men's? I'm going to give it a go, will be 100% behind Cilic.

And, if things go according to plan, Pot will be back in action in Malaysia on 22nd of this month :) :) :) I'm so excited. Hope he can get back on form.

Raahh · 08/09/2014 14:47

I did last year, even though i had to be up really early for the school run. But it was Nadal.

Much as i like Cilic- I don't think I will quite manage to stay wake so long. Grin

And I did say at the beginning that Serena would win- not that i wantedher to though. She is going to hang around forever....

I'm going to try, I've got a extra baby tonight in the shape of my 8 week old niece who isn't sleeping so I'm figuring I'll be awake anyway Smile
Am favouring cilic but if nishikori wears a sensible shirt I might change my mind Wink

AnyoneForTARDIS · 08/09/2014 17:32

blast. wanted the Wozza to win. didn't watch the match.

assume Serena didn't throw a wobbly this time cos her bezzie was on other side of the net?

now media saying is she the best female player ever?

well shes certainly not the nicest! (claws sharpened and out!)

Raahh · 08/09/2014 22:34

I cannot believe Eurosport is not showing the final. Angry

Cilic has a break- c'mon Marin!

don't know what license they have for GS's. they haven't shown the semis live, only next day repeat, prob do same with this one.

I cant stay up all night, im in bed, only got freeview up here so not sky sports! Sad and cant get red button to find live scores.

on pc a bit so will check on eurosport website.

Tennis.

don't think theres another televised tourney till October! I don't get BT sports.

Raahh · 08/09/2014 22:44

But on Cilic already has the first set, 6-3.

C'mon Marin- hopefully a few pics of Goran will appear on the US Open website to cheer me up Grin

Grrrrrrrrrrrr - gimme Goran!!

Raahh · 09/09/2014 00:00

Wel, it looks like it could be Cilic's tournament. I'm really pleased for him.

But, boy do I wish I was a betting woman!

OP posts:
Raahh · 09/09/2014 00:04

And a pretty short final too- I expected more of a fight from Nishikori.

Well done Marin.

Oh fabulous news, so pleased :) Eurosport are beyond rubbish - couldn't believe it when I found it wasn't being shown. It doesn't look from the score like it was a classic match, but I still would have liked to watch, as I'm sure lots of us would.

Raahh · 09/09/2014 08:27

I am really pleased for him- he earned his spot and has played well all tournament. He came close at Wimbledon to causing an upset, when he seemed to have Djok on the run. I've said before, i forget how young he is (relatively, obviously he isn't 'Becker' youngGrin), as he seems to have been around for ages .

And he's in the top 10, and in the running for a spot in London- 12 month ago, I doubt he expected this! All 4 slams, won by different players, which is nice, 2 totally new slam winners. I don't know if he has it in him to build on this, but it's a good title to have.
not enough pictures of Goran, though

Tennis

I have everything crossed that Nadal will be fit soon, though and wearing sleeveless tops, without a hint of lemon

Well I managed to watch most of the match Smile very happy with the result.
I think it was closer than the score might suggest, cilic just played incredibly but nishikori didn't just give up. I think he just didn't know what to do so kept playing wilder and wilder shots hoping that something would break through.
Amazing credit to cilic, he really held his nerve, especially when the crown got behind nishikori obviously hoping to extend the match.
Nice to see someone else win, fingers crossed Rafa is back soon.

AnyoneForTARDIS · 09/09/2014 17:10

Cilic was certainly 'excited' at winning! certain camera shot of the flagpole up!! Grin.

Gorans face was a picture!

wish it had been a 5 setter though. I like Kai.

but well done Marin.

Ivanisevic and Chang in the final!!! Tennis

Raahh · 09/09/2014 17:26

this is the nearest I can get! only pic I could find!

AnyoneForTARDIS · 10/09/2014 19:31

oh here we go. now the critics saying is Cilic a one hit wonder?

so bloody what? how many players have NEVER wona GS?

and there are many ''1HW's''- Pat Cash, Delpo (hopefully another one),Ivanisevic,Stan,Stoser,Bartoli............

Raahh · 10/09/2014 19:56

Cilic is a solid player- and has been quite consistent in tournaments(apart from dodgy drug tests )- he may have been lucky this year, he took his chances. We've been saying a lot this year that tennis can be as much about luck, as skill. There are great players who may never win a Slam -Ferrer will probably fall into that category, sadly. Tsonga is another who at one time looked destined for a slam or 2.

I saw a clip of Cilic being interviewed- he has a lovely smile. I'm a sucker for a nice smile. Smile

Oh I say TARDIS, that picture is um, well it's rather, that is to say - ok, words fail me :)

Why are people so quick to criticise? Always going to be nay- sayers, but it's a bit soon to be describing Cilic as a one slam wonder two days after his win. Goran has made a tremendous difference after a relatively short time so who knows what else is in store. I think Cilic struggled with self - belief a lot, and this win is surely going to help with that. Also, I tend to forget that, at nearly 26, he's relatively young still so quite a few years ahead of him.

Pot has just announced that he's not doing the Asian Swing, needs more time :( But he hopes to be back for the European tour at the end of the year. So Stockholm in October hopefully.
