WIMBLEDON 1988- Men's Singles Final- It's Edberg v Becker...

in the coaches box...Grin

So Federer V Djokovic, 2014.

Gutted it isn't Nadal, or Grigor. Glad it isn't Murray, we might get more balanced commentary. Grin

I think Federer may have it- and will be able to play a better game than against the big serving Raonic.

But Djok is hurting from the number of GS losses
He has only played Fed on grass once. At Wimbledon. He lost.
If the roof goes on, Fed is better indoors too.

I want a 5 set thriller, because I don't care who wins really. I am refusing to move form the sofa. My children will go to school Monday wearing pyjamas, and with a bag of crisps for lunch.

I am sticking with Virgin Pimms (a.k.a Peppermint tea)BrewWine

Almost got into a heated debate over the equality of mens and women's tennis prizes yesterday. Luckily, i gave a very hard stare and the --misogynistic bastard- gentleman in question backed down.

Give me the RAFT of reasons why, one final, does not the prize money make. I'm out with them again in two nights.

LaVolcan · 07/07/2014 09:41

Tricky one that fox.

Most men's matches are best of three, with the exception being the grand slams, but I suspect that the men still earn more overall than the women.

But.... if you consider Federer v. Raonic - Federer despatched him in three, but did the third set add anything?

Or even Sunday's final? Djoko would still have won if it had been best of three.

And is a game where the men just bash aces across all that skillful or exciting? The best ladies matches are far superior - we were just a bit unlucky on Saturday that there was such a mismatch.

foxinthebox · 07/07/2014 10:05

Good points, LaV

My feeling is the final is just that, after a long line of competition. The women have to train as hard and effectively have the same career.

Also, a rather unformed thought, if they are being pushed to their limit, then that is their max. Bad luck that men meet their max later. So the equal money equals equal effort.

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 07/07/2014 12:57

Usain bolt runs for less time than Paula Radcliffe. Should he be paid less?

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 07/07/2014 12:58

Women take longer to run the 100m. Should they be paid more?

LaVolcan · 07/07/2014 14:18

Should their winnings be scaled pro-rata to the number of games they played? So the men winning in three straight sets would be paid less per match than those who had to take 4 or 5 to win? By this token, Dimitrov should have got more for his semi-final loss because he had to play 4 sets to Raonic's 3.

Or there was the Isner - Mahut match with 70–68 in the final set. Should they have both got a bonus for playing a set which lasted as long as 3 or 4 extra matches?

Rafanderpants · 07/07/2014 16:55

was nice to see so much Edberg wasn't it?

anyone else having withdrawals? Tennis Sad.

Theres an exhibiton match on Eurosport at 5.30 today with JohnnyMac and Michael Stich. thatll do for now.

I MISS WIMBLEDON Sad Sad Sad Tennis.

BTW I thought womens final was great, yes it was short, but Bouchard didn't play bad-nerves notwithstanding- Kvitova played flawless tennis and that's what made it great.

Rafanderpants · 07/07/2014 16:59

I wish tv would show more doubles too. love the doubles.

Raahh · 07/07/2014 17:02

AgaPanthers · 07/07/2014 21:07

BillinTeds, in reality Usain Bolt and his female counterpart take the same amount of time, there's no appreciable difference between 10 seconds and 11.

Although obviously in the case of Usain Bolt he will get paid far more in sponsorships, because he is the fastest person on the planet, which is more noteworthy than being fastest of one gender.

The average women's Wimbledon final lasts 90 minutes, and the men's 2.5 hours. So the hourly rate for women at Wimbledon is 50% higher than for men.

Provencalroseparadox · 07/07/2014 22:47

Result just found Today at Wimbledon on the planner from the day I went. Watched the highlights again and even managed to spot myself and drones cheering at the end if the Kyrgios match

I've been looking at the pictures of the preparations for Djok's wedding. on the SBOS. What a week Novak is having- not wonder Jelena wasn't at the final, she was probably in a last minute tizz.

It's almost as if he Djok really didn't fancy his chances at Wimbledon- he didn't give himself much time to get ready for his wedding. Or maybe he is just really laid back GrinTennis.

I wonder if AC has an invite?

He could do crap commentary from the back Grin
