If there are any other Poldark fans out there you might like to know that UKTV Drama are showing the series from the beginning starting this week.

Episode 1 is on Wed at 4pm, with 2 & 3 on Thurs and Fri. Fingers crossed that they continue each week and don't dot it around the schedule.

Got it all on video and periodically watch it when I need a boost.

Ross Poldark - god I would swoon in his arms!

southeastastra · 03/09/2006 21:09

haha poldark that tons old

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 21:15

Ross Poldark is still gorgeous though SEA. The filming and some of the action is a bit dated, but the man remains godlike!

southeastastra · 03/09/2006 21:25

my dad used to chase us round the house saying 'ahh poldark'

TwoIfBySea · 03/09/2006 21:27

That is why I want to watch it from the beginning sea, I was just a tot when it first came out (honest!) Reruns tend to be shown and then taken off so I really want to watch it all.

Hints to DH for the dvd set are so far going unheeded.

Ross Poldark, what exactly is it about him? I would even consider rating him well above Darcy.

His voice and his masterfulness IMO.

Blandmum · 03/09/2006 21:31

just for you girls

JanH · 03/09/2006 22:23

I wanted to be Demelza (Don't know what she was thinking about snogging that soppy Hugh.)

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:25

She just wanted to make Ross jealous Janh so he would come to her with more force and vigour!

JanH · 03/09/2006 22:25

You can rent the DVDs from all the online places, TIBS, have a Poldark orgy and then send them back when you are gorged (if you'll pardon the exp)

Robin Ellis wasn't nearly as godlike when he was in Fawlty Towers; much like Colin Firth in everything else he's been in. It's the breeches

Turquoise · 03/09/2006 22:26

I was about 11 and he was my first real adult crush, . He's in Hello this week still looking good at about 60.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:27

Oh I don't know Janh, he still had the voice. I could die for a man with a voice like his!

But I agree, the breeches are helpful. And the boots!

Turquoise · 03/09/2006 22:27

You're so right JanH - and the hair. And the bodice ripping manliness.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:28

Ooh Turquoise, any link to that? What was the gossip on him?

robinrocks · 03/09/2006 22:29

Have namechanged as I am slightly embarrassed about this !

I was a Poldark fanatic. Belonged to the Poldark Appreciation Society (many of whom were mad as a bag of frogs lol).

Have met Robin Ellis (Ross), Angharad Rees (Demelza) and Winston Graham, plus other members of the cast of the series.

Have first editions of all the books, some signed by Winston.

Turquoise · 03/09/2006 22:30

Will search. It was about him and his brother from Bad Girls, pics taken in his house in France.
Did you read all the books? Better than the series IMO, except of course for visualising the lovely Ross.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:30

Oh don't be shy robinrocks! Who are you really? I can't believe you felt the necessity to change your name! It is a fantastic story and Robin Ellis truly is a god.

I think it went a bit off after no.5 - The Black Moon - everything else was written after the tv show and never reached the same standard for me.

Hated the fact that they changed the storyline so Ross had to marry Demelza and Elizabeth was going to leave Francis, all wrong from the book. (see Robinrocks - I too took it very seriously!)

JanH · 03/09/2006 22:34

I came close to that level of devotion in about 1987, rr, when the programmes were rerun for the first time; I bought books called things like Poldark's Cornwall (with pics of cast playing cricket!) and we had a holiday in N Cornwall and I drove around actively looking for Warleggan, Demelza, Wheal Anything, etc.

Oh yes, DG, the voice is wonderful. And the scar was very neat! Never understood the attraction of Elizabeth, at least not in the wooden person of Jill Townsend (and Francis was so lovely until he drowned).

It was just the kind of totally engrossing historical romance they just don't make any more (too much time and money I suppose)

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:37

Adored Francis too. Actually saw Clive Francis, the man who played Francis in a play at Chichester (An Ideal Husband) and was awestruck to be in the same building as him!

Turquoise · 03/09/2006 22:37

Can't link it DG, but it's the one with Kate Middleton on the front, should still be current for a day or two I think.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:39

Thanks for trying anyway. I have googled him and found some reasonably current photos of him. TBH he looks like John Craven more than Ross now. But good for his age certainly. And the voice can't have changed...... get a grip DG!

JanH · 03/09/2006 22:45

swoon here, ladies

Angharad Rees was married to Christopher Cazenove when he was in Duchess of Duke Street - what an impossibly beautiful couple they were - again!

DumbledoresGirl · 03/09/2006 22:49

Just closing down now to go to bed, but wanted to share this with you: my 2 favourite scenes from the first tv series:

  1. the one with Demelza and Ross after their baby has died and he says if I have not shown my love for you enough, forgive me.

  2. the scene in the tavern when he and Francis have finally made up and Warleggan walks in and Ross and Warleggan fight.

Off to bed now with those scenes in my head.
