I loved the first episode, however, I have just watched the fourth episode of CF. Now, I do like this programme, but somehow it is lacking and I can't quite put my finger on what it is lacking.
It is almost as if so much effort has gone into costumes and the settings that the actual content but script is just dire and it just not enough is happening. There is no depth to any of it and too many back stories. I must confess, I am not a fan of long lingering camera angles. I like a good script and actors and actresses that actually speak. There is far too much "looks left, looks right and looks straight ahead" for my liking. Or that other all time acting classic, "smelling the fart"...
Am I the only who thinks that if it is a WW1-based programme if you are not going to show battles and the sheer horror of what went on? I suppose it could have been for budget reasons, but tonight I found myself thinking this is all a bit "Tenko" production-wise.
I think it only has another two episodes to run, which means there is going to be the usual penultimate episode of clearing up some storylines, creating a couple of new ones and leaving you completely on the edge. Just before the final episode which attempts to clear everything up in the final twenty minutes.
I will continue to watch but my overall verdict is what a shame, it had so much potential...
