Anyone watching? I think it's good so far!

OP posts:
cloudspotter · 13/04/2014 21:02

Would you let kids aged 8 and 10 yo watch it?

Kveta · 13/04/2014 21:09

god, it was abysmal. wooden, melodramatic nonsense, felt like a soap opera rather than decent drama.

go and read Not So Quiet to learn about the VADs!

MrsDavidBowie · 13/04/2014 21:45

I'm enjoying it...missed last week's.

And no...not suitable for young children.

slartybartfast · 13/04/2014 22:13

escapism but not good acting. imo

slartybartfast · 13/04/2014 22:13

hermione norris' face can't crack a smile, why so serious.

Hulababy · 13/04/2014 22:18

I couldn't get into it at all last week. Love CTW and was hoping for something along that line, but this didn't do it for me

Bunbaker · 13/04/2014 23:01

Well, it wasn't exactly Downton Abbeyish this week. I still enjoyed it.

I think part of the "wooden acting" was down to how people behaved in those days. Especially the officer's wife who was all about keeping up appearances.

Ellenora5 · 14/04/2014 02:06

I watched the first two episodes tonight, I liked it, I would imagine that the matron had to be very frosty in those days, they were a stickler for rules and regulations, but I think she showed a softer side to the nurse that shamed her family, baddie nurse is great, very bitter and twisted and is now getting goody goody nurse on her side

Loved the flaky nurse too, she is good fun and so niave, thinks it's all a big adventure

I'm seriously hoping I can remember their names by next week Smile

susiedaisy · 15/04/2014 10:29

Enjoyed the second episode more. Think it's growing on me.
200 casualties in one night. So overwhelming. So so sadSad

NigellasGuest · 15/04/2014 10:45

I sniggered at goody goody having a fit of the vapours over giving a bedbath!

I like Rupert Graves.

MarthasHarbour · 15/04/2014 23:13

I found the goodbye scene between the officer and his corporal (did i get that right?) so very emotional - when corp said that he had been the best gaffer ever and nobody else would come close

susiedaisy · 16/04/2014 07:03

I found the scene where goody two shoes couldn't do the blanket bath sad. The solider was in shock and disorientated Hmm

diddl · 18/04/2014 08:41

I thought that it was OK.

Oona Chaplin absolutely pisses me off though.

What's her character's backstory?

Had a child that was given up for adoption?

yummymumtobe · 18/04/2014 09:04

Second episode was definitely better. I am now interested to find out the back stories. Eg, what is up with goody goody? Obviously she's a bit older than the other volunteers and suggestion was she's a bit of a spinster, but there must be more to it. Baddie nurse was keen to comfort her so am wondering if there's going to be a weird plot where baddie fancies her (along the lines of the Judy dench/cate blanchett film).
Really don't like Oona Chaplin as an actress, but I have only ever seen her play slightly smug, knowing characters! Agree that maybe she is a 'fallen' girl and her mum has the baby?

toastedteacake · 18/04/2014 09:27

In the titles at the beginning of the first episode 'Kitty' dropped a wedding band into the sea before she disembarked.

Has she divorced/ been divorced? And that is why she is black sheep?

diddl · 18/04/2014 09:57

Oh yes, divorced & husband has the child?

I had thought maybe she was supposed to marry but he died -and she was already pregnant?

LittleBearPad · 20/04/2014 00:47

I think she had an illegitimate baby, which is now with her mother, and the wedding ring was a fake for appearances sake whilst she was pregnant/had newborn.

LittleBearPad · 21/04/2014 10:15

I missed what the captain said to kitty at the end. Anyone?

Ellenora5 · 21/04/2014 15:16

I can't remember LittleBear, sorry Sad

I didn't enjoy last nights that much to be honest, why is it such a big deal that she's engaged, and that goody goody nurse is very devious

diddl · 21/04/2014 19:17

LittleBear, I think he said "you alarmed me when you arrived".

Ellenora, she's engaged to a German.

Ellenora5 · 21/04/2014 19:32

Ye I know diddl but they don't know that, maybe it's because she hasn't told them, can you imagine how hard that must be though, being engaged to the enemy

diddl · 21/04/2014 19:43

Oh yes, that's what I meant, the fact that she's hiding it.
I'm not really interested in any of the characters tbh.
Some of it's a bit stereotypical isn't it?

Ellenora5 · 21/04/2014 20:42

Ye it is, I liked the first two episodes but didn't enjoy last night, three left so will prob stick it out, couldn't see it having a second series though

AbsentFromTheOssuary · 23/04/2014 07:40

I wish i had £10 for every costume drama / book i've ever seen / read where the heroine goes for a dip in her nighty and ignites the flame of a chap.

Maybe that's where i'm going wrong Grin

WaitMonkey · 27/04/2014 23:14

Really enjoyed it tonight. Love the matron.
