Isn't There Anyone Who Watches Peaky Blinders?

It was a slow starter but I'm now totally gripped.

I'm surprised that there seem to be so few people watching it.

Surely it having Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson in it should be enough?

I watched first episode. Saving the rest as DH works abroad, and we like to watch together. Guessing it gets even better? Slow burner in first episode but gripped by end.

TigOldBitties · 30/09/2013 18:49

I think that because it isn't a topic that most people would be familiar with they did a lot scene setting in the first episode. I know this happens with dramas anyway but I think that it did seem particularly slow.

However it has really picked up.

I know when it first aired, there was a thread on here about the accents being awful, but once you get past the accent maybe not being what you'd expected its good. I'm totally enthralled by Cillian's character and its really become the TV programme that I look forward to and don't want to end.

I'm already worrying enough people aren't watching it for there to be a second series!

I like it although it has now been renamed Pesky Blinders in our house Smile

I very much like the funky theme music throughout as well.

IslaValargeone · 30/09/2013 18:56

We tried, but just couldn't get past the accents.
I don't care who is in it, I want quality performance over big names.

TigOldBitties · 30/09/2013 19:00

The music is good. I'm sure one ep had No Church In The Wild.

I do actually think they are quality performances. The accent thing to me is a bit of a red herring. My area's accent is regularly brutalised on TV and film, so it not something that I find grating or essential to the story line. Also as the accents are all very similar I read it was intentional Confused

I wouldn't say Paul Anderson is a big name more that I like looking at him and Cillian Murphy than that they are 'big names'. Did notice Cillian is actually quite short though, put me off him a bit!

IslaValargeone · 30/09/2013 19:06

Yes, you may be right Tig about the performances being good.
I haven't stuck around long enough to find out though.
I say get a bloody dialect coach in, or get someone else.
For me that's important, I realise it's not the same for everyone.

TigOldBitties · 30/09/2013 19:31

No I understand Isla because sometimes there is just something about a programme or even a piece of music that just grates and overrides any of the other good parts.

I'm not that familiar with Brummie accents anyway so I probably find it less irritating than other people anyway.

It is a shame that with such investment, big names, good quality drama that they have let it down by not sorting out the accents.

I like it but I wish they'd set it somewhere else.

ReginaldBlinker · 30/09/2013 19:36

Yes, I love Cillian Murphy that show!

The accents are rubbish, but are in most films and tv shows, so I don't really let that bother me too much.

TigOldBitties · 30/09/2013 19:44

I thought the Peaky Blinders were real and thats why it had to be in Birmingham?

Its quite nice not to have something set in London, (don't have to watch my own East End accent being butchered) but has proved how little geography I know. Last week I was googling where Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and Birmingham all were and then having to work out where they are in relation to London so it could make a bit more sense. Realise HBO means I have a better knowledge of USA/NYC/New Jersey than here!

ReginaldBlinker · 30/09/2013 19:53

TigOldBitties Yes, you're right. It is based on a real gang, and they were based in Birmingham.

Pixel · 30/09/2013 20:48

I've only got round to watching the first one but I do intend to watch the others eventually.

LAlady · 30/09/2013 23:25

This series is so good. Am now completely up to date and loving every minute. So glad we stuck at it - first episode was a bit slow.

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 23:14

Aha! Was just about to start a thread. I'm on episode 2 and love it. I don't mind the accents, I've heard worse. I was reading that back then accents would have been very different to how they are today. The only character I'm unsure of and find less than convincing is the undercover blonde woman.

TigOldBitties · 03/10/2013 18:01

Is anyone watching this tonight?

OP posts:
ReginaldBlinker · 03/10/2013 21:05

Wouldn't miss it Grin

valiumredhead · 03/10/2013 21:18

ReginaldBlinker · 03/10/2013 21:19

Valium If you have sky, you can control the box from their app... It's brilliant for when dp won't give me the remote Grin

ExitPursuedByADragon · 03/10/2013 21:20

DH is watching. I am MNetting.

cocoleBOO · 03/10/2013 21:21

I like it but Sam Neils accent is shocking. I think he must have learnt it from lan Paisley.

I like the fact that they play the White Stripes through it.

SauvignonBlanche · 03/10/2013 21:22

I am, whilst MNing.

ThePortlyPinUp · 03/10/2013 22:05

I love it, I even have secret saucy thoughts about both Arthur and John as well as Tommy.

Rollergirl1 · 03/10/2013 22:40

I think it's fucking brilliant. I thought the accents were all over the place in episode 1 but not bothering about it now. Have noticed they've played White Stripes tracks in every episode. Loved tonight's episode. Poor Tommy getting the blame for Freddie's arrest when it was the Irish bint that stitched him up?

TigOldBitties · 04/10/2013 00:00

Sorry didn't get to watch it tonight.

6 year old DD has been a nightmare meaning I had to do 'active parenting' until it was over. Little fucker has no sense of timing!

Am going to watch tomorrow and report back, sounds like it was a good ep though.

Monty27 · 04/10/2013 00:45

Haven't seen it yet, but people were talking about it in work. Will watch catch ups. :)
