Anyone watching this series? Sandra left last night and Jack 'came back' to see her off [wipes tear]. I am not sure about Lyndhurst, he is quite pedantic so perhaps they are trying to make him the new Brian?

They've clearly had new writers I think, as the whole show seems like it's trying to be "edgier" rather than some sort of 9pm Last Of the Summer Wine.

I thought the stories were becoming slightly less "tired" but can't see it going on for much longer tbh. Brian and Jack were the most rounded characters. Dennis Waterman is just Dennis Waterman cheeky chappie in everything and it just got so unrealistic.

I like thingy, Dennis name-escapes-me Scottish man though. I have had a soft spot for him since Local Hero.

It's kind of always been something safe to watch when there's nothing else on, but nothing you'd set the video for.

Theas18 · 18/09/2013 08:35

missed it last night but I wondered how long Andrea would last!
agree edgier is right.
miss Brian :-(

JustBecauseICan · 18/09/2013 08:40

I thought that Brian and Esther were going to still be a part of it and Esther was going to be chucking her pinny in the bin and start sleuthing.

That would have been good. I guess Brian has had some film/theatre offer he can't refuse and Esther doesn't want to do it now Jack has gone.

DW will still be doing it when he's 95 if they let him. Poor deluded sod.

wiganwagonwheelworks · 18/09/2013 08:46

who did Denis Lawson play in Local Hero ? Was he the b and b owner ? I just wonder who they will get to replace Sandra. I think Nicolas Lyndhurst is a good choice as team member but who on earth can do the bosses role ??

JustBecauseICan · 18/09/2013 08:47

He was, yes, so funny. Always shaggy shaggy and then cooked the American man's rabbit.

I luffs that film.

Oh God, please tell me Amanda thingy, Silent witness woman is busy.

JustBecauseICan · 18/09/2013 08:48

But while we're on Amandas, Connie Beauchamp would be fabulous.

eddiemairswife · 18/09/2013 13:40

Tamzin Outhwaite.

When he left in the last series it was to go into a hospice, then they started taking about him in past tense, so the viewers had to assume he died. They didn't actually say he died.

I really wanted a Brian and Esther sleuthing team too, I wonder if that's a possible spin-off further along?

I think Brian is too important an ac-tor and probably wanted to go off and do more heavyweight things. Esther is Jack's RL wife so presumably they left together. I hope they aren't really sick.

Love both of them since When the Boat Comes In and Esther hasn't changed really in all those years. (ie she is one of those people who looked 60 when she was 25) Grin

I only have to hear James Bolam's voice and it takes me back to the Likely lads and WtBCI

Thinkingofmyfabfour · 18/09/2013 19:42

Don't worry you can still see Jack and Esther together in grandpa in my pocket Wink
Didn't realise they were married IRL
Don't know how the programme will pan out without Sandra and Brian. I do like Nicholas Lyndhurst more than I expected too! And I also has a soft spot for Dennis Lawson

Thinkingofmyfabfour · 18/09/2013 19:43

have

SauvignonBlanche · 18/09/2013 19:44

Was it the last in the series?

sillyoldfool · 18/09/2013 19:56

The actors all had a massive bust up with the writers didn't they? That's why they've all left in quick succession. Tamsin outhwaite is the new boss, I'm not sure about how she'll work, a bit too similar to amada redman imo, wouldve been better to have someone who's more of a contrast I think.

whatkungfuthat · 18/09/2013 20:20

Really? I was hoping it would be someone with more gravitas

OP posts:
wiganwagonwheelworks · 18/09/2013 20:32

I dont like Tamzin Outhwaite much as an actress. Hmmm. Yes the cast complained that the writing had gone downhill....I think the writinh has picked up a little. I hope it all works. I love New Tricks...p

Karbea · 18/09/2013 20:39

Jack went off to a euthanasia place (not sure if thats what they are actually called :/ ) so is definitely dead.

gazzalw · 18/09/2013 20:48

I really enjoyed last night's episode although it was sad.....

GeorginaWorsley · 18/09/2013 21:34

I enjoyed it too.
Not a fan of Tamsin Outhwaite but will reserve judgement.
I think Denis Lawson is very nice for an older man...Wink

whatkungfuthat · 18/09/2013 22:25

I didn't realise he was actually going to the place to due, that makes it even sadder

OP posts:
gazzalw · 19/09/2013 07:23

It was very poignant...

DW and I were aghast at the proposed changes but actually, although Nicholas Lyndhurst is no Alan Armstrong, he fits the geek/nerdy one very well!

Not so sure about Tamsin Outhwaite though....

I agree it's not like Luther but I find it quite heart-warming and amusing....must be showing my age Hmm.

JustBecauseICan · 19/09/2013 08:57

Oh I'd do Denis Lawson.

I might need a box though. Either that or Nicholas Lyndhurst is 7 ft tall.

gazzalw · 19/09/2013 09:30

Grin...

I do think Nicholas Lyndhurst is very tall though....remember him in Butterflies - he was much taller than his 'brother'
