Anyone watching this series? Sandra left last night and Jack 'came back' to see her off [wipes tear]. I am not sure about Lyndhurst, he is quite pedantic so perhaps they are trying to make him the new Brian?

I agree, and Lyndhurst is too young. They have moved too far from the original set-up.

What I agree. Tired of kick arse femail cops always having ishoos.
It's as if they have to be hysterical or damaged before they can be taken seriously. But a bloke with problems is always a bit heroic iykwim . Knew summat was up when she dusted hubbies shoulder in HQ. I did however think that her reaction was very moving and conveyed ' that moment' well. As far as I experienced it anyway. Hope she gets the house.
I'd do Strickland though. He looks like he'd be up for it in a lift, all quick and hard.

Female. Ffs

invicta · 25/09/2013 08:23

I quite enjoyed the programme until the ending. She did portray it well. It may have been better to have that storyline simmering through the series, rather than wham, bam in the first episode. Maybe Dennis could have heard rumors, or seen something.

I like Nicholas Lyndhurst in the series. I think he has slotted in well.

wiganwagonwheelworks · 25/09/2013 09:15

I enjoyed it!!! Even TO....who I usually do not rate. Phew.

whatkungfuthat · 25/09/2013 11:49

The ending is what is wrong with this series imo. The writers are trying to get us to empathise with her over the breakdown of her marriage, its too quick, they should have built up to it like invicta says. They are doing the same with Lyndhurst and his daughter, and I say that as a mother of a child with a disability. Its not the same as Jacks grief over his wife or Brian's alcoholism and his relationship with Esther. Its cynical and just makes me uncomfortable.

The series ends next week. I think they should have saved the philandering husband until the next series. It all seems a bit rushed.

I liked it. TBH Brian was beginning to get on my nerves, if I was Esther I would have left him years ago. I

gazzalw · 25/09/2013 17:58

I think we will probably have to wait for the next series before we can really form an opinion.....

Agree that all the stuff with Sasha's husband could have been put on a slow-burner.....

Yama · 25/09/2013 18:23

I didn't like it until the end.

I liked Tamsin.

nennypops · 26/09/2013 13:42

I can't see how it can be said Lyndhurst's character is too young. Police can retire after 30 years' service so it's entirely possible he would have done so, particularly with a mentally ill wife and a disabled daughter to look after. He's around 52 in RL and is made up to look older, so it seems about right to me.

edam · 26/09/2013 13:48

I don't think it's the same show with an almost-complete change of cast. Dennis Waterman was always the weakest character anyway. And not nice IRL - wasn't he violent towards Rula Lenksa when they were married?

(I can't see him without hearing the Fast Show sketch 'write the theme tune, sing the theme tune'.)

wiganwagonwheelworks · 26/09/2013 14:04

yep he was violent. Fitting that my mental image of him is nibbling a giant ginger nut and singing the feme toon. He deserves no more than that.

whatkungfuthat · 26/09/2013 19:43

Too young compared to the originals, it just looks weird to me as Lyndhurst isn't much older than me [bitter]

What a shame they couldn't just call it a day when Amanda Redman decided to call it a day.
Although I like Lawson and even Waterman, the rest just doesn't work for me so won't watch the rest I don't think. I miss Brian, Sandra and Jack too much - they made the show.
The loveydoviness nonsense between Tamsin and her husband was laughable (was he meant to be the father of her kids or a 2nd marriage or something? who canoodles like that with their fella like newlyweds after 20+ years???) and I found the script and the acting weak. The Italian was dire too - I had to replay the last line Tamsin came out with in supposed fluent Italian - cringe.

nennypops · 27/09/2013 01:18

To be fair, the character expressly said, as far as I remember, that she definitely wasn't fluent in Italian.

hackmum · 27/09/2013 09:02

I didn't like this week's episode. It's a shame, as last week's episode with Amanda Redman was a corker. I think she was brilliant in that role - she made Sandra a really believable character.

But this week, the pacing was all wrong, the plot was completely unbelievable, Gerry's outrage at the "new woman" was contrived, Tamsin Outhwaite didn't seem to act at all. It just didn't gel at all, somehow.

TinyPop · 28/09/2013 12:43

Nenny - wasn't she just trying to be modest? I'm nit picking, but it was just the way it was phonetically read out with the intonation in the phrase all wrong, so even if she wasn't fluent, to come out with a phrase like that she'd know where to pause and where not to.
RIP New Tricks but I hope we see Redman and Armstrong back on our screens in something else!

foxymoon487 · 01/10/2013 22:19

Nice work Tamsin and Lyndhurst ! Redman is a
hard act to follow and TO did it well-
she's always been a very likeable actor.
Lyndhurst's geekiness is fun - he fits in
seamlessly.Both are a breath of
fresh air which is always good.
Roll on the next series.

Yama · 01/10/2013 22:31

Aye, she was good tonight. And Lyndhurst is growing on me.

I do miss Sandra though.

My Bake Off/New Tricks double bill Tuesdays were good while they lasted.
