Anyone watching this series? Sandra left last night and Jack 'came back' to see her off [wipes tear]. I am not sure about Lyndhurst, he is quite pedantic so perhaps they are trying to make him the new Brian?

He's (nick) 1.88/6ft2 tall according to google.

Phoebe47 · 19/09/2013 21:17

I still enjoy the programme but I miss Brian and Jack. I am not at all keen on the Nicholas Lyndhurst character - I just don't rate him at all I'm afraid. I also do not rate Tamsin Outhwaite so may have to stop watching the programme once she is on it. Will give it a go for a few weeks but all these changes of characters will spoil it for me I think.

whatkungfuthat · 20/09/2013 08:25

I agree Phoebe, I am not keen on Lyndhurst either and I think TO will be shouty instead of properly acting the part iykwim?

Denis Lawson EnvyEnvyBlushEnvyEnvy oh yes I would.

gazzalw · 20/09/2013 08:53

Denis Lawson is a silver fox in a way that none of the others are!

cocolepew · 20/09/2013 20:13

I think it had definitely got better again. I like Nick Lyndhurst in it. Tamsin Outhwaite was good in The Fixer.

I'd do both Denis and his nephew Grin

gazzalw · 20/09/2013 20:34

Apparently lots of women have 'done' his nephew Wink!

Yama · 20/09/2013 20:40

I have always love New Tricks. It is my guilty pleasure.

I handled Jack's departure. Being Scottish, Dennis was an alright replacement.

I was holding it together after Brian going but it took strength.

I don't think I can take Sandra going. I think I love her.

Orianne · 20/09/2013 20:55

My Mum told me it was Denise Van Outen who was replacing Amanda so Tamsin Outhwaite is a huge relief.

colleysmill · 20/09/2013 21:01

I'm amazed tamsin outhwaite is Sandra's replacement, especially considering a few series ago she was caught by the ucos team having murdered her own daughter and went to prison!

whatkungfuthat · 20/09/2013 21:09

I wouldn't do Dennis, he flips his collars up in a wnaky manner

OP posts:
invicta · 20/09/2013 22:29

I quite like Nicholas Lyndhurst in New Tricks - he has slotted in well. The writing has definitely improved.

Tamsin O. Was good in Hotel babylon, so I expect she will do a good job here.

I found the programme with Sandra leaving surprisingly emotional.

JustBecauseICan · 21/09/2013 06:16

Grin at colleysmill.

I can see where people might confuse Tamsin and Denise. Blonde, brashy and both stole men who should have been mine.

colleysmill · 21/09/2013 06:48

I take it all far too seriously Grin

Although it does truly annoy me when actors play two different parts in the same programme - its almost like saying "oh the viewing public are sooo dim they won't notice". Well I do and it causes me no end of confusion.

Same with midsummer murders - one year the new chap is a lay about gardener and a suspect in a murder case, few years later he's miraculously worked his way through a police career.

Worse these days with endless repeats on itv3 and Albi.
I am 16 weeks pregnant which makes the rage much worse!

sillyoldfool · 21/09/2013 06:56

I read a thing in the radio times that said new tricks pulled in the biggest viewing figures of any crime drama! It's become a huge show apparently. I love it, but it is character based in way a lot of crime dramas aren't so much, or they only really rely on one character. I really hope TO does a good job.

colleysmill · 21/09/2013 07:20

It's interesting but I can think of a few recent American crime dramas where the lead detective/dcsi is a woman but not many British ones.

When I think of recent British hits I think of Lewis, Luther, whitechapel (bit gory for me) Dci Banks, law and order UK, good old midsummer murders - all male leads. I really enjoyed Vera though with Brenda Blethyan.

The concept of retired police officers who never really can leave their instincts behind appeals. And in new tricks there's always been an element of humour in the writing - the episode where jack was sent undercover to a care home and he was so unimpressed for example,

I obviously need to get out more often!

JustBecauseICan · 21/09/2013 09:05

New Tricks is also not filmed in a clever film noir way. (ie in the fecking dark with all jiggy jaggy clever camera work so you can't work out who is in the scene and what the feckity is going off)

Am too old to be sat squinting.

I like Amanda's coats as well.

Definitely improved storylines...the old 1970s Sarf Lahndon gangster stories are tired. (poss old Dennis Waterman liked those though?)

I love Vera and Law and Order- both really excellent. I always feel short changed that Law and Order is only an hour, but then if it started on a 2 hr format it might lose its snappiness and immediacy.

I admit I watch all the crime dramas (not Whitechapel though, I can do gore, but not abject terror and gratuitous violence, and dd who is almost 10 likes a juicy homicide herself, but more of the New Tricks style, rather than butchered hookers etc)

Floralnomad · 21/09/2013 09:15

I watched the last episode but I'm really not enjoying this series , Dennis is ok but Nicholas Lyndhurst is a step too far for me , apart from when he played Rodney I think he's awful and he probably only got away with Rodney because of the script and the rest of the cast . I know things have to move on but perhaps they should have just called it a day and done some spin off series instead .

nennypops · 21/09/2013 09:54

I think the Nicholas Lyndhurst character is shaping up to be interesting - there's a lot more to find out about him. I also like seeing Lyndhurst doing something serious for a change.

gazzalw · 21/09/2013 10:04

I think it's what you'd call 'cosy TV' isn't it? There's something rather comforting about it.......It's an entirely different 'beast' to the American cop shows and even British productions like Luther and Whitechapel. Nevertheless we really enjoy it and so does our DS (nearly 13)....

Yes, I think we're probably all guilty of disliking change so I think it will take us a goodly while to get used to the new characters, but I'm sure we will.

It was good to have James Bolam back as Jack albeit for only a few short minutes.

Karbea · 21/09/2013 11:42

Yes, I agree. Hope they don't try to make it too edgy now.

hackmum · 21/09/2013 12:05

I really like New Tricks. I thought it wouldn't work once Jack and Brian left, but it does. And it's actually improved since Nicholas Lyndhurst joined - words I never thought I'd write.

I do miss Jack, though, and I'm not convinced about Tamsin Outhwaite. But I think the writing has been really good these past few episodes.

whatkungfuthat · 21/09/2013 12:38

Where are Gerry's daughters recently?

OP posts:
whatkungfuthat · 24/09/2013 23:32

Did anyone watch tonight's? I think perhaps they should have ended it on a high(ish)

OP posts:
gazzalw · 25/09/2013 06:23

I did and although it wasn't good I guess we have to give it a few weeks to adapt to the changes.....

I think it would have been better had they chosen someone 'opposite' rather than a younger version of Sandra....
