Just read that Matt Smith will be leaving Dr.Who at the end of the Christmas episode this year.

When he was announced as the new Dr, I had never heard of him and was a little unsure about what to expect. For me, he has turned out to be one of the best Doctors - and I speak as someone who was watching from around 1966 onwards and who has missed very few, if any, episodes since then.

So now the speculation will begin about who will take over the role.Over to you ladies, who do you think should be the next Doctor?

I agree - I have enjoyed Matt Smirh's Dr.
I think the next Dr needs to be someone aged 45+. Could John Hurt's Dr be written in and maybe not be completely bad?

Morgause · 02/06/2013 05:41

Eddie Izzard would be perfect.

englishteacher78 · 02/06/2013 06:25

Very sadHmm but at least we get 3 doctors in the November special Grin At least, there could be more!!!

aliciaflorrick · 02/06/2013 08:27

I'd heard this a couple of months ago, it was announced very early in the morning on the radio and then never mentioned again, so I thought I'd imagined it. Obviously some over zealous DJ giving out the news too soon.

I too think an older doctor would be better, my fantasy doctor would be Jason Isaacs, he's such a superb actor I reckon he could take the doctor to new levels.

GlaikitFizzog · 02/06/2013 08:32

I have just read about this! :( I'm still getting over DT dying, sorry regenerating.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 02/06/2013 09:29

Yes, I thoughtI'd someone suggest it on a Who thread here. it is sad, he has really played the character well.

deepfriedsage · 02/06/2013 09:32

How many more regenerations has the Dr got?

Lottapianos · 02/06/2013 09:46

Gutted - he's been the best Doctor ever. He's such a brilliant actor that he's coped amazingly with some of the downright duff lines he's had this series. He really made the role his own. And he's lush Smile

The Cumberbatch would be amazing but I think he may have bigger fish to fry these days. Eddie Izzard is a great actor and he would be a fab choice. I would absolutely love if the next Doctor was a woman - I adore Alex Kingston but no idea if she could become the Doctor.

SESthebrave · 02/06/2013 09:50

Benedict Cumberbatch would be good but too similar to MS.

I love the suggestion of Jason Isaacs.

waikikamookau · 02/06/2013 10:01

i really like matt smith. Sad and thought I would never get over david tenant going, but I did

I wonder whether Russell tovey will get another look in, he was touted for it last time/

infamouspoo · 02/06/2013 10:05

oh no. but Jason Isacs indeed

waikikamookau · 02/06/2013 10:08

is this a blond Jason isaacs Grin or brown?

notyummy · 02/06/2013 10:32

He will be missed- dd will be sad! I liked him too. And a big 'WOOF' to the delicious (and talented) Mr Isaacs as the next Dr.

parabelle · 02/06/2013 10:38

How about a female doctor? Or a black doctor? Or a disabled doctor? You know, something different than the usual white male.

TheBirdsFellDownToDingADong · 02/06/2013 10:39

Halle-bloody-lujah.

Might start watching again now Mr Cardboard Cutout is going.

TheBirdsFellDownToDingADong · 02/06/2013 10:40

Brown Jason Isaacs I think. Blonde he'd have to be a baddie.

Jbck · 02/06/2013 10:56

Even though the storylines have been pretty rubbish I don't miss an episode and he's the reason for that.
I think he's been one of the best doctors ever, there may have been individual episodes where their acting has been better fir others but he's been consistently excellent.
Sad loss and I don't know who could follow him.
I think we need a more serious doctor probably older too to avoid being unfavourably compared to him and DT.

noblegiraffe · 02/06/2013 10:56

Oh good. Maybe they'll hire someone with charisma next time!

They could do with getting rid of the scriptwriters too, this series has been a bit of a low.

waikikamookau · 02/06/2013 10:59

I read Ben Wishaw's name being mentioned, he would be a good slant on the doctor.
I think Martin Freeman would be good, although he is Dr Watson - is there another episode of that?

marjproops · 02/06/2013 17:41

john hurts too old!isnt he pensioner by now? more willim hartnell thn matt smith? he is brilliant though.

someone a bit older than MS, and has 2 or 3 companions like in the old days.

and a man. no woman. and the doc wants to be ginger!

think the 'how many regenerations' gonna be a timy wimy thing and hell prob have a few more .

Bowlersarm · 02/06/2013 17:42

Hooray. I might start watching it again.

marjproops · 02/06/2013 17:44

Im soooo gonna miss MS.

how bout-
Vic Reeves
Mat Baynton
Frank Skinner or
Jim Howick?

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 02/06/2013 17:52

Every time we've debated this on Mumsnet, Idris Elba gets mentioned, and he will KEEP GETTING MENTIONED until someone hires him for it (Moffat, I'm looking at you)

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 02/06/2013 17:55

Oh, if we're putting a brunet Jason Isaac in then I reserve the right to throw Mark Strong into the mix. Grumpy, glowering Doctor sounds good to me (although it should be IDRIS \o/)

marjproops · 02/06/2013 17:55

ooh yes, idris elba!
