ROLAND GARROS 2013

Well, here we are again, another French Open. Yay ! Grin

It's a shame we wont see Murray, as he was playing very well, it would have been great to see the Top 5 'together' again.

No prizes for guessing who the favourite for the Mens is, VAMOS RAFA ! I'd love to see him win it for the 8th time.

Roger Fed is looking well, just started playing , it would be good to see him do well, although we all know Wimby is his best tournament.

Novak seemed to be struggling a bit earlier this year, after the Aussie Open win, it will be interesting to see how he fares this year on clay. Nicely set up so that he and Rafa will meet in the Semi's, should they both play well. Which easily leads to Rafa for the Final, and his 8th win ! Don't forget, Novak fans, that Rafa beat Nole in 4 sets last year. Wink

Serena Williams is looking her usual belting self, just thrashed her opponent, she must be a consideration for the win, as must last years winner, Maria Sharapova. I'd like to see Laura Robson do well, and Heather Watson, but realistically Laura could be out in the first round.

Hope everybody enjoys the tennis as much as I do, I'm going to have a great fortnight, 9:30am to 9:00pm everyday. Bliss !

Looking forward to having our usual daft threads running, along with the ogling and arguments. Here's to another great summer of tennis ! Wine

Raahh · 31/05/2013 18:33

Well done to Robredo,he's had his own problems and has come back really well this year.

Raahh · 31/05/2013 18:34

Rafael needs to up his game to win. I know the weather has been unkind, but these slow, sluggish starts aren't helping him at all. Hopefully the challenge of a quality opponent tomorrow will motivate him and boost him up.

Fed still playing almost flawlessly :).

So happy to catch up with you all -- I love watching tennis, and reading about how you all do, too. I'm in the US, without cable TV, so I have very limited ability to watch matches. I read about it a lot, though, and the guy who manages the gym will switch to ESPN2 if I ask nicely....

Fed fan here, but I like Rafa too. Can't warm to Djokovic, though. Quite like Tsonga, and always hope the French will do well at RG. Agree with whomever said it would be nice for Wawrinka or Ferrer to win a slam.

Has anyone seen that website where Rafa is compared to a capybara? Or is that old news?

Witt · 01/06/2013 08:23

I haven't seen that website IreneR Sounds funny - do you have the link?

Raahh · 01/06/2013 11:51

Maryz- this is the official RG website RG and this is the ATP ranking page, where,if you bored and odd (like me) you can get live updates on players ranking going up (or downGrin) rankings

Raahh · 01/06/2013 11:52

Hmm try again

link?

Raahh · 01/06/2013 14:56

Just in time for Nadal/Fognini- think Fognini could be a problem, especially with Nadal looking less that 100% so far. Then Djokovic/Dmitrov. Could be a long afternoon....

Raahh · 01/06/2013 16:30

Fognini is a showman- but Vamos Rafa!3 sets, if you don't mind...

Raahh · 01/06/2013 17:53

Phew!

I expected more from Fognini, but it was very watchable.

CremeEggThief · 01/06/2013 17:57

I am glad a better quality opponent made Rafa lift his game, although I was surprised he let him back in, from 5/1 to 5/4. I think his knees are still affecting his movement :(.

Going to watch Djokovic next- even though I can't stand him!

Raahh · 01/06/2013 18:12

Will be interesting to see how Nadal goes on from here- he's playing Nishikori next, who is very fast around the place.

I was never a Djokovic fan,but he's grown on me a bit. just a bit He seems to have matured a bit- not so ready to get angry on court.

I do like what I've seen of Dimitrov- though I bet he's sick of the 'Baby Fed' tag!

marjproops · 01/06/2013 18:14

Paire gets penilised for on court coaching from his team.

Boris Becker used to too.

Yet Nadal seems to get away with it. (not saying he had some today or during this tourny but he has done in others, wasnt there an incident at the aussie open earlier this year?)

not my personal observations,, apart from 1st sentence.

this has been bought up at times from commentators.

favouritism? favouritisms also been bought up too about a few players.

(remember mardy Fish saying it about Murray at Queens a couple of years ago, just one example)

and im not just pointing this out cos im not a fan. id say it if it was any of my faves too.

IreneR · 01/06/2013 18:19

Here's that site; and to be fair, it's the capybaras who look like Rafa, not the other way around, apparently:

capybarasthatlooklikerafaelnadal.tumblr.com/

I've just moved into a new house, and we are having serious tech issues. Although NBC is actually broadcasting three hours of live tennis from RG, I can't get the station to come in consistently.

While I'm deep in the throes of Buyer's Remorse with this move, being unable to watch tennis really is the final straw.

CremeEggThief · 01/06/2013 19:04

Sympathies, Irene. I am moving this month and trying to time it after Roland Garros and before Wimbledon. Can't have a house move interfering with tennis!

Djokovic is on fire tonight .

marjproops · 01/06/2013 19:34

im not a fan of the Fedora but i like the way hes moving up stealthily through the tourny almost under the radar!

most of the focus is on Nadal, Djoko and serena.

CremeEggThief · 01/06/2013 19:37

WTF is it with John Isner and his love for long, long matches? Confused

Glad Haas found a way to win in the end. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for him and I think he's shown courage, coming back from illness and injury and still playing at 35.

CremeEggThief · 01/06/2013 19:39

I adore Federer and I love the way he's playing here, but I wonder if he's peaking too early.

IreneR · 01/06/2013 20:11

I managed to catch the end of the Isner/Haas match on an NBC web stream which stopped and started constantly in the manner typical of my fabulous internet connection while painting skirting boards.

One year, I want to be in France, sipping wine while watching the French Open. (It can be on TV, mind you -- I'm not THAT spoiled.) It will make a nice change from this year's experience!

Next year, I'll be in the UK in May; can you watch tennis without a cable or satellite connection there? Or do I need to keep TV facilities in mind when choosing accommodations?!

I'm pleased about Haas's win, and I wish Dimitrov had done better.
