TV show decisions that are just WRONG - I'll start with the West Wing.

There must be loads of these. I'm sure ER is not in fact a Bible to medical correctness (say it isn't so!).

The one that bugs me is the bit the West Wing where the President breaks out into Latin. It makes me cringe. It's bad, bad Latin (IMHO).

And also - of course - the fact Toby never gets a chance to clear his name. I love Richard Schiff for explaining he played it assuming Toby was covering for someone, which is great explanation of a frustrating storyline. But I never believed Bartlett (who seems to me so good at accepting people's different points of view) would have judged him so quickly.

Is there anything that bugs you massively? Either for being factually wrong or just not fitting your sense of the characters.

Twin Peaks also started off so well and seemed rushed at the end ....

FairPhyllis · 04/11/2012 15:03

Actually, I didn't mind what they did with Baltar - I thought they were trying to make him into St Paul, which worked for me as I thought he was deranged enough for it to be plausible ...

In my ending, EVERYONE DIES. EVERYONE DIES, possibly in a Blake's 7 style shootout. And then Laura Roslin's visions about the afterlife come into play, and cylons and humans are still stuck with each other in the afterlife. This is the only ending that is tonally appropriate for the show. The ending needed to be utterly bleak. The one midway through 4 would have been OK.

It's such a shame because I admire the first two and a bit seasons so much: but in the final seasons Moore systematically abandoned everything that had made the show great: we ended up with mythology-driven rather than character-driven plot (and the mythology never paid off anyway), deus ex machina, people making ridiculous, out-of-character decisions with no consequences when the whole beauty of the early seasons is that consequences are relentlessly followed through over long periods of time, and silly shock ratings-boosters like killing Starbuck off and then immediately bringing her back.

Pagwatch · 04/11/2012 15:06

Itsafleshwound..
Twin peaks started off so well and then someone said 'shit, we need an ending..'

I love David Lynch. Blue Velvet is one of my fav films. Barking and Isabella Rosellini - that's like perfection.

Yama · 04/11/2012 15:59

Agree that the BSG ending was shit. They all died in my head too.

Blast from the Past Alert. Does anyone remember House of Cards?

Urquhart throwing Mattie off the roof was implausible I thought. Great series though.

OliviaMumsnet · 04/11/2012 16:11

You might think that I couldn't possibly comment.
I loved that show. Was 6th form when it was on iirc

Pagwatch · 04/11/2012 16:17

The storyline of Spooks with freakishly good then bad then not sure Lucas was stupid and near pantomime.
Killing Adam and Ros should have ended the franchise. It was shit once they died.
I watched several dreadful series just to find out how the Harry/Ruth line finished.

UltraBOF · 04/11/2012 16:19

I was genuinely shocked by that. Like, really Shock< that face. Poor Maddie.

UltraBOF · 04/11/2012 16:22

(Still, at least she got to marry Mr Bingley in the afterlife)

Pagwatch · 04/11/2012 16:24

What's her face in the first spooks getting deep fat fried was one of the most shocking things I have ever witnessed on tv.

Although 'what's her face' is a bit inappropriate in this context.

UltraBOF · 04/11/2012 16:28

Pag, you are so BAD! Yes, I saw that quite recently- missed it first time around. It was horrific.

FairPhyllis · 04/11/2012 16:31

The adaptation of Persuasion with Adam from Spooks and Anthony Stuart Head in it should never have been made, period.

Yama · 04/11/2012 16:33

Olivia - apparently it was 1990. I would've been 14 then.

I couldn't quite believe it. I was waiting to see how they would be saved at the last moment.

I am doing the whole of spooks again on Netflix. Early series were great.

I want to say 'casting Keeley Hawes in Ashes to Ashes' as a dreadful tv decision but it's not quite that thread is it?

FromEsme · 04/11/2012 16:37

I LOVE the ending the Twin Peaks. It was the middle of the second series, after we find out who killed Laura that it got shit. Last couple of episodes were ok.

All that weird shit with the chess set though...wtf was that?

thestringcheesemassacre · 04/11/2012 16:43

Yes early spooks fab pag, I'm re watching too. Adam was/is quite something. But yes it should have ended with them.

Did anyone ever watch The Practice? Another US legal drama, nearly every character eventually was either attacked or murdered someone. Was great, went crazy

OliviaMumsnet · 04/11/2012 16:48

@UltraBOF

(Still, at least she got to marry Mr Bingley in the afterlife)

ROFL

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 04/11/2012 17:44

I could never watch Spooks - it was too bloody violent. I have had to close my eyes and stick my fingers in my ears in the torture scenes in Homeland and go lalalalala so I can't hear anything.

Lots of series go on too long. Ally McBeal, although annoying, was very good at the beginning with that love triangle and angst with Ally, the good looking weak man and her with the jaw. And then it just got bloody stupid.

I hated hated Sez and the City at the end, but it would have been redeemed by Carrie laughing off Big's declaration of love at the end, and it to have finished with Carrie being single and just in love with NYC.

CaroleService · 04/11/2012 18:05

They should never have killed off Chin Ho in Hawaii Five-0 (the original series).

Yes I really am that old.

UsedToBeAContender · 04/11/2012 18:22

I may have missed this in the previous threads but I remember being just gutted that they never found a way to get Buffy and Angel together in the end. They had that teaser episode when he's human for a day and then they both made the sacrifice of him becoming a vampire again to "continue the fight"....booooo!!

MardyArsedMidlander · 04/11/2012 18:54

YY to Firefly being cancelled- the box set is fabulous.

Boo to Spike and Buffy never getting it together- and having that totally ridiculous Chaste hug the night before they die. yeah right- you're going to die tomorrow, you're 22 and in bed with Spike- and you DON'T shag?????

ER- Alex Kingston having fantastic chemistry with the black surgeon- then being dumped because off screen he didn't want to have love scenes with a white actress. mark never marrying SUSAN LEWIS.

UltraBOF · 04/11/2012 19:04

I loved that train station goodbye scene in ER: "I love you Susan!" "I know. Byeeeeeeee!"

wintera · 04/11/2012 19:26

Oh my god, is that true about Dr. Benton guy not wanting to have love scenes with a white actress? That is bang out of order!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/11/2012 19:28

Grin I love how you explained the Spike/Buffy thing, mardy, you are clearly a woman after my own heart. Grin

wintera - IIRC, at the time he didn't say it as 'mmm, I am dead racist, I don't like white women', it was more that he felt that black men were very often being portrayed in relationships with white women rather than other black women, as if people wouldn't watch two black people on screen ... if I am right about that (and it was yonks ago but I am fairly sure I remember reading this somewhere fairly reputable), that is quite understandable?

Incidentally, speaking of actors' own prejudices - something I do love is the way they sacked Preston Burke/Isaiah Washington from Grey's because he had a problem with the actor who's George being gay - and they subsequently did character assassination on the character in the show too! He never gets mentioned nicely.

Angel was a mopey moper who moped.

Like a vampire version of Dawson from Dawson's Creek.

It's soooooo haaaaaaard and depreeeeeeessing being a vampire/teenager, apparently.
