I'm glad they're showing some of the working poor too.

renaldo · 11/09/2012 21:43

Some decent people but some absolute scum

TunaPastaBake · 11/09/2012 21:43

Olwen has made me so Angry
Bloody excuses !

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 11/09/2012 21:45

im glad they are showing the working poor too but the comments they made shows how well the Government and press propaganda has worked pitting the working poor against the unemployed poor.

PerfectStranger74 · 11/09/2012 21:48

Sue - wanting to get her kids away from the estate - can she really not see that they are part of the problem?

How many times would you be calling the police if all this was happening on your doorstep? It must be so demoralizing and depressing.
The kids don't stand a chance. It's not just that there is nothing to do, the parents' attitudes stink.

DottyWottyDooDah · 11/09/2012 21:49

My Dh and his Best Mate both grew up on this estate, my IL's still live there. All kids from Dh and his friends family have left the estate and all work and live comfortably in private properties.
What makes the difference between those and the families where generation after generation stays there with no prospect of moving on.

LST · 11/09/2012 21:50

Wish I hadn't watched it. It makes me angry!!

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 11/09/2012 21:50

Remember not all unemployed people are like Olwen. I suspect some of the people were cherry picked for this programme to make the public think that all unemployed people are like olwen.

Nancy66 · 11/09/2012 21:52

....Ollwin or whatever her name was - the thick cow who doesn't 'believe' in education for her kids has no incentive to ever get off her arse and look for a job when she's getting £1,100 a month in benefits

Aspiration? Ambition? Guess your DH and friend were bought up to feel they could do it, whereas maybe others just think bugger it, theres no point in even trying?

OP posts:
TunaPastaBake · 11/09/2012 21:55

Agree that unemployed are not all like Olwen - but Olwen is one too many and her kids have very little chance. Sad

PuggyMum · 11/09/2012 21:55

Notice how she's got enough money for booze and fags too! I'm not a benefit bashed but the boys before summed it up.... Where's the incentive to work?

PuggyMum · 11/09/2012 21:56

Basher! Dammit!

Jellykat · 11/09/2012 21:56

That was in reply to Dotty btw.. Somethings running very slow here Confused

Would had been nice had they picked a poor working single mother for a change. We do exist.

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 11/09/2012 22:00

Bet Littlejohn is having a massive orgasm over this programme.

tittytittyhanghang · 11/09/2012 22:00

Dark, I would have thought that most people realise that not all unemployed people are like olwen, but imo (esp on mn) theres almost a denial that people like this exist. And they are not that few and far between, even if they are not the majority.

SoleSource · 11/09/2012 22:00

Hi Jelly
I am so glad I wasn't brought up on an estate.

They're the forgotten people.

LST · 11/09/2012 22:01

YY titty

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 11/09/2012 22:01

Exactly Lucie. It would have made for a much more interesting and balanced programme. but thats probably just what they didnt want.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/09/2012 22:01

I've only caught the end of this, but God how utterly depressing. That poor boy with the useless parents - his Dad thought it 'better to stay away'? What a fucking cop out.

Did I understand correctly that the final family they showed where one son had moved away from the estate - the father had plans to move away and just leave his wife and other son? What kind of person does that??

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/09/2012 22:03

titty yes that is v.true.

PerfectStranger74 · 11/09/2012 22:03

Some of the people in this area are 3rd generation workless. They've never known anyone in their family work. The Morrison family make me mad, they complain about the estate, yet it is their family who are bringing the area down. It must be an AWFUL place to live, but it doesn't justify their behaviour. Even if we lived there, my kids would not be involved in any anti social behaviour!

DottyWottyDooDah · 11/09/2012 22:03

It is slow Jellykat, and someone's stolen my grammar and punctuation too.

The attitude of my IL's as parents was certainly far removed from Olwen's and the group of boys interiewed...but why?

I find it very interesting.

Olwen is definitely and extreme character, but she's not the only one.

I thought the boys interviewed (in the bedroom, for some reason!?) were very typical of the area.
