I much much prefer the original.

I watch it all the time...'tis one of my fave programmes

Housewife2010 · 19/02/2012 22:13

I'm watching, but it's not that good - hence me succumbing to MN. I'm an obsessive fan of the original Upstairs Downstairs too so to use the same title & music seems a bit of a travesty...

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 19/02/2012 22:13

I don't think it's supposed to be like Downton .. I like it .

perplexedpirate · 19/02/2012 22:16

Hmmm, can't make up my mind. I think it's growing on me...

BelleDameSansMerci · 19/02/2012 22:22

Oh I loved the original - it was perfect. And still is.

I watched this at Christmas, or whenever it was on before. I like it.

I cba with Downton. Never liked the first series...

GeorginaWorsley · 19/02/2012 22:28

I like it,and am a fan of original, and of Downton.
Would love Keely Hawes' wardrobe!

Punkatheart · 19/02/2012 22:36

The original series is wonderful - each episode like a play in itself. But this is turgid, uninvolving....

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 19/02/2012 22:37

it's an unholy mess, imo. ep2 a little bit more tidy. but not much.

OlympicEater · 19/02/2012 22:39

I enjoyed it. Very easy to watch.

celticlassie · 19/02/2012 22:40

It was a bit confused - I think they relied on people remembering what happened in the first one over a year ago. (Maybe I'm just not that bright...) Will persevere, it should get better.

I want to like it but there's something not right and I can't quite figure out what it is. I think maybe it's the script and direction it didn't hang together very well.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 20/02/2012 09:49

AND THE FACT THAT KEELEY HAWES CAN'T ACT HER WAY OUT OF A BROWN PAPER BAG! Grin

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2012 09:54

Also coming after the best thing the BEEB's done in Yonks would show anything up IMO! Although it wasn't much cop last year either!

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2012 09:57

Yes aitch but I don't know why I always compare her with K.K. and she's a bit better than herGrin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 20/02/2012 09:59

kerry katona? oh i dunno, some her iceland work was magnificent.

BendyBob · 20/02/2012 10:00

Original Upstairs Downstairs was excellent far better than Downton imo and even quite racy at timesWink Remember Lady Marjorie and her norty 'fling'?? Or Capt Bellamy getting the parlour maid up the duff. Gasp.

I rather liked the recent Christmas U/D one off they did, but my heart sank when I realised they'd be covering the war years with the new series. Now it's just like any other 'wartime drama' and that is just going to dominate everything and it won't feel like UD anymoreHmm. Stamps foot!

The subjects they're covering are more about the historical things that were going on generally rather than focusing on the house and the people in it.

The thing I liked about it originally was the attention to detail wrt the hierarchy in the house and the saucy shenanigans they all got up to glossed over by appearances.

crazynanna · 20/02/2012 10:02

It will never be the same without Mister 'Udson Sad

BendyBob · 20/02/2012 10:04

Oh and Lady Percy looks like Katy Perry. That was confusing me tooConfused

Mrsrobertduvall · 20/02/2012 11:17

I started watching it half way through, and find it unsettling that it looks like the original house but with Deco furnishings. I loved the original..Mrs Bridges and Ruby, Georgina and James, Richard Bellamy....
I will watch it next week.

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2012 11:59

No aitch the actress who Keeley models herself on Kiera Knightley they're like twins IMO!!

Mrsrobert I read an interview with the scene designer who was really excited about doing Art deco in that set. It's always looked too 'setty' and theatrical IFYKWIM

Downton used the house to full effect and it gave more consistency to it.

Also I couldn't work out if the MOH was good friends with David the King Who Abdicated or not? and my history is a bit rusty, when DID he abdicate?

Housewife2010 · 20/02/2012 12:00

Captain James Bellamy - swoon...

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 20/02/2012 12:11

isn't he the louche one who died in a plane?

Housewife2010 · 20/02/2012 12:15

He committed suicide in a hotel after he lost all his money (& Rose's) in the Wall Street Crash. Such a shame Georgina rejected him.

ppeatfruit · 20/02/2012 14:10

Yes housewife swoon Grin He's the one who got the Pauline Collins character up the duff wasn't he? he'd ve been better marrying her!
