I'm torn between that and the ITV thing at 9 Confused

wintera · 27/12/2011 20:51

Hope it's as good as I want it to be! Agree that trailer looks fab! Gillian Anderson as miss haversham looks really good. And the young chap playing pip is the same lad from worried about the boy too and I thought he was very good in that. He's very pretty looking though, even prettier than the girl playing Estella!

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:10

I'm finding it a bit scary.

Meglet · 27/12/2011 21:14

All I know is there's someone called Miss Haversham in it. Never got round to reading it.

It's very misty

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:19

I've not read it either but didnt think it was supposed to be so scary.

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:24

Why is it so dusty?

smokinaces · 27/12/2011 21:25

Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham does not work. She looks younger than me (I'm 29!) which I know they wanted to bring her more to 40, but she doesnt work. Her voice is all completely wrong too. Ruined it for me, she really has.

smokinaces · 27/12/2011 21:26

mollieo its dusty as its meant to have been sitting not being touched for 15 years since her fiance walked out on their wedding. Thats meant to be a wedding dress she's wearing.

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:27

But if she has a pre-teen dd she can't be more than 40. She looks 40 to me (I'm older!).

smokinaces · 27/12/2011 21:31

Estelle isnt her daughter, she "adopted" her. I'm guessing you havent read the book before?

smokinaces · 27/12/2011 21:33

ah sorry, just read above.

Honestly, highly recommend the book, it is fantastic. As are the previous adaptations of it.

The casting of Estelle is very good I have to admit. As are the other characters. I just cant get my head round Miss Havisham, its not even what she looks like - its the way she speaks, and moves. Its just not right IMO.

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:35

I know she is adopted but to me Gillian Anderson won't see 40 again and I assume the dd is of an age to have an adopted mother of 40+ (unless the mother is Madonna in which case there could be a bigger age gap Xmas Grin).

Meglet · 27/12/2011 21:40

I've just read (most of) the GE wiki page so I've got my bearings now.

tiredemma · 27/12/2011 21:40

I would have found someone like Sheila Hancock more convincing as Miss H.

Gillian was fantastic in Bleak House and The Crimson Petal....

CalatalieSisters · 27/12/2011 21:41

I'm not watching it becasue I couldn't bear the thought of a Pip that looked like a male Keira Knightley. He's all lips and pouting prettiness. Pip is ten kinds of twit but even so I would have spared him that.

smokinaces · 27/12/2011 21:41

Its not an official adoption MollieO. Like with Pip. She "buys" the children as experiments.

smokinaces · 27/12/2011 21:42

tiredemma agree on all points. GA is a fab actress, she just doesnt work for me in this.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 27/12/2011 21:44

i reckon moving Miss H's age down a bit (just a bit, she's supposed to be in her fifties) is a stroke of genius. she's so much more mobile, so much more understandable as a character, buying in the things that she might otherwise have had through marriage.

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:52

What happened to Pip? He's gone all boy band pretty Xmas Hmm

Meglet · 27/12/2011 21:56

Is Orlick the one with manky teeth?

MollieO · 27/12/2011 21:57

Yes - the one that Joe said had to leave now that Pip had learned his trade.

Dotty342kids · 27/12/2011 22:02

I've never read the book but really enjoyed that, brilliantly atmospheric!

Meglet · 27/12/2011 22:05

mollie thanks. I do tend to forget characters names

ggirl · 27/12/2011 22:09

really enjoyed it but agree that the older Pip is too beautiful

QueenOfFlamingXmasPuddings · 27/12/2011 22:24

great expectations was on my english gcse syllabus - somehow i managed to get an a* without ever reading the book Hmm

so finally at 30 i am finding out wtf it was all about!

Thought it was fab, really atmospheric.
