Yes, perhaps they should just put him in a frock and be done with it.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 28/12/2011 21:53

but he wasn't a poor blacksmith's child, was he, he was being funded through his apprenticeship, surely, so there will have been some money around. not much, but in combo with a muscular job a blacksmith would have been some hot totty. and sugar was hard to come by in them there days so teeth good. www.retronaut.co/2011/06/my-daguerrotype-boyfriend/ check out this hunkarama, for example... Estella definitely grew on me in this 2nd part, she has a haunting look about her which shows how well she plays the part of Miss Haversham's daughter - she must have been very damaged living with her for so many years and it shows. I thought her more beautiful as we saw more of her in this episode and can see why she was cast. Pip on the other hand is a bland character, and god knows where they dragged Orlick from, he scares me.
Am really enjoying it and as sorry the last part is tomorrow.

LeBOF · 28/12/2011 22:06

How on earth did you find that? Grin

wintera · 28/12/2011 22:16

Yes I agree. Estella grew on me too. She got to show more acting chops in this second episode and I thought she was very good. I very much like this adaptation on the whole. When there have been so many versions of a classic story in the past then there is a tendency to think why are they bothering? But I think this one has been done well and I like the whole atmosphere of it too.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 28/12/2011 22:18

i like hot victorians, bof, wanna make something of it? Grin (actually i LOVE the retronaut site, prolly my entire favourite of whole wide internet).

katkitya · 29/12/2011 00:20

Im really enjoying this, I cant wait for the last one now. I think GA is fantastic in it.

AitchTwoOHoHoHo · 29/12/2011 01:37

i've watched the last one now... vg.

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 29/12/2011 08:01

How have you watched the last one Aitch? Are you a time traveller?
I am completely ignorant of the book. I loved the way Magwitch turned out to be pretty boy's benefactor.

franke · 29/12/2011 08:10

Does anyone know where the marsh scenes were filmed?

tiredemma · 29/12/2011 09:09

Franke- Tollersby Wick Marshes in Essex (apparently).

The only think that disappoints me about this series is that it isn't on long enough. I would have loved it to be in the same 'episode' format as Little Dorrit and Bleak House. There is so much in Great Expectations that I don't think just three episodes does it any justice. Especially if you want to get all the 'back stories' behind each character (Jaggers maid 'Molly' for example)

i am a time travelling someone who works in/around tv.

wintera · 29/12/2011 10:44

Did anyone of you watch the BBC adaptation back in 1999? It starred Ioan Grufford as Pip and Justine Waddell as Estella. Charlotte Rampling played Miss Havisham I think. I seem to remember it being a good adaptation also. I was surprised when the BBC announced they were doing another version so soon after the last one as I thought it was only on about 5 years ago. Got a shock when I realised it was actually 12 years ago!

katkitya · 29/12/2011 12:19

What other classic was GA in? Is she English?

tiredemma · 29/12/2011 12:28

She was in Bleak House (and lardy fantastic she was too)

She was also in The Crimson Petal and the white- A victorian novel set amongst squalor- fab again.

Meglet · 29/12/2011 21:34

Oh, that's quite scary.

crazynanna · 29/12/2011 21:36

Where she went on fire just then,Meglet?

Ifancyashandy · 29/12/2011 21:37

Amazing suicide scene. And spectacular music.

Meglet · 29/12/2011 21:44

crazynanna yes, gave me the heebie jeebies.

crazynanna · 29/12/2011 21:48

I think I saw bits of her hair floating upwards Shock

SESthebrave · 29/12/2011 22:02

Have watched all 3 episodes and on the whole enjoyed it and this adaptation.

My gripes though are similar to those mentioned already around casting/beauty of Pip and Estelle.
I'm a fan of GA from Bleak House but she just wasn't right for this role and I suddenly realised tonight that her whimpering voice was like an impression of Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter (so wrong!)
The fire scene from tonight started well (although it seemed she set fire to herself on purpose and I thought it was an accident?) but I was disappointed we didn't get to see more of Pip's rescue attempt.

I thought Ray Winstone did a fantastic job and was the best actor in it.
I also liked the ending with the simplicity and the suggestion that Estelle had always loved Pip too but only now felt free to express it.
