Thanks tiredemma - makes me want to visit Essex.

LeBOF · 29/12/2011 22:04

I enjoyed that. Estella was beautiful enough, I think, it's just that Pip was too pretty. I enjoyed his redemption by the end, and how he found his goodness again.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 29/12/2011 22:04

I thought it was great, not quite as good as Bleak House but I'm a sucker for a decent Dickens adaptation. Casting Ray Winstone was a great move.

Sorry to be thick, but can anyone tell me how the boat with the scarface nemesis of magwitch on (and the soldiers/police) knew they'd be there? Were they betrayed?

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 29/12/2011 22:10

Just channel hopped to 4+1, Dorian Gray - tonight must be classics night.

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 29/12/2011 22:11

Yes by Orlick (sp) he had been watching them.

roundwindow · 29/12/2011 22:18

Thanks Smile

ElfOnTheShelf · 29/12/2011 22:25

I disagree SES I thought the ending was weak. Estella is supposed to be turning into Miss haversham and Pip rescues her from herself before her macabre attitude really kicks in. I was disappointed at the end but thought the whole film was great especially Ray Winstone Smile

GeorgeEliot · 29/12/2011 22:37

Ahem

it is Miss Havisham

not Haversham

crawls off to pedants corner ..

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 29/12/2011 22:45

Don't be daft, it's Miss Havashag.

dmo · 29/12/2011 23:39

What happened to the money? I remember Pip saying it was safe and that he would buy lots of horses but then he was giving away all of his possessions to pay for things.... Hmm sorry if I'm being daft, I may have skipped a few minutes of it as my DS is teething Angry.

Actually, someone made a really good point to me the other day when we were discussing Great expectations. I was saying how good Ray winstone was as magwitch and wasn't he an inspired choice and then my friend said is he though? I was quite surprised but then she went on to say that as far as she could see he was just playing Ray winstone, because he is always exactly the same in everything he's in. Anyway, I thought she made a good point, even though I didn't agree with her at first. She's kind of right that he can be a bit same-y. If you think about it, casting Gillian Anderson was actually a braver move as it just seems such a strange choice.

ppeatfruit · 30/12/2011 09:28

Agree that 3 parts is not enough for GE if you read the book you'll get loads more out of it. BTW has anyone seen the film with the OLD John Mills playing Pip it's hilarious!!!(Not in a good wayGrin)

wintera · 30/12/2011 09:48

I haven't seen the old David Lean version for years. I remember enjoying it at the time though. I think it's funny the way a lot of people think just because a film is old and considered a classic then it's perfect and untouchable. When you watch them again, then you realise how much of the actual story from the book has been taken out. It's the same with the old version of Wuthering heights too.

chipstick10 · 30/12/2011 10:13

Ray Winstone overacts massively. He reminds me of the horrendous Steve Mcthingy in EE who plays Phil Mitchell. He just heavy breathes and grunts.

wintera · 30/12/2011 11:08

NewYork - pip was fibbing about the money. It all goes to the government because Magwitch is a criminal. Pip is left with nothing.

ElfOnTheShelf · 30/12/2011 12:17

ppeat yes, John Mills had too posh an accent to play the young Pip, but i loved the Joe they cast especially when he visits Pip in London and keeps knocking his hat over and embarrassing him Grin Also the Aged P guy was hilarious and sadly missed in this adaptation.

Thanks for the clarification about the Magwitch fortune, I hadn't twigged it would all get siezed and thought Pip would have banked it without realising.

nicknamealreadyinuse · 30/12/2011 16:35

Elf - Pip was telling Magwitch that it was all safe because he wanted him to die thinking that his future was secure and the money was all there.

MollieO · 30/12/2011 16:49

Didn't Pip use his money to fund Herbert's partnership? Xmas Confused

superfrenchie1 · 30/12/2011 17:00

MollieO - Herbert's partnership was paid for by Miss Havisham - Pip went to Satis House and she wrote a cheque and then there was the fire

I loved it and didn't want it to end and might try to seek out Bleak House which passed me by

Christmasford · 30/12/2011 17:16

Miss Havisham doesn't commit suicide in the book, her dress accidentally catches fire and she dies later. They made it, to me, look like suicide...I was dissapointed with the adaptation tbh

wintera · 30/12/2011 17:25

Yes you're right, it's definitely an accident in the book but I thought it was an interesting take on it and I thought that whole scene withing her putting the veil on and then burning along with the letters was beautifully shot. It was a really striking image. Bleak house was fabulous so I would definitely recommend that. I would also recommend the version of Our mutual friend that the BBC did back in 98, that was also very good indeed. Personally I didn't care much for Little dorritt but that's just my opinion.
