Happiness

Documentary series with Professor Robert Winston following the lives of 25 children born in 2000. In this programme, he asks the age old question are we born or are we made? Ethan has attention deficit disorder. Prematurely born Helena was lavished with attention and toys - but did her parents go too far? And Calvin's parents split up when he was a toddler, and he hasn't spent much time with his dad. Now he's to stay with him every other weekend.

me too love it love it
my dd is a carbon copy of Helena her entire personality is like hers , it gives me tears in my eyes every time I watch...

Bomper · 10/01/2006 20:13

I love this too, dd1 is also a 'millenium baby' (b. 29 January 2000), so it's always interesting to hear about what milestones they should be reaching etc. Also, one of the families featured lives just round the corner from me, so it's really odd seeing every day places like the park, on TV!!

TwoIfBySea · 10/01/2006 22:51

RTKM thank you! I love this programme and watched it before dst were born at the tail end of 2001.

Totally forgot it is on at this time of year, usually on a Tuesday night as well so I wouldn't have been looking for it on a Sunday!

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 22:53

Brilliant thank you RTKM, I don't want to miss this.

alexsmum · 10/01/2006 22:54

was ethan the little boy whose mum used to leave him in his cot for hours on end? the one who was addicted to computer games?

RTKangaMummy · 10/01/2006 22:55

You're welcome

Alexsmum thats the one, I could hardly understand a word he said he spoke so fast and with a strong NI accent. It made a good valid point about video games desensitising children to violence.

alexsmum · 10/01/2006 23:01

would it be terribly judgemental of me to say that it's not surprising that ethan has problems?

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 23:04

No, I remember thinking the same thing myself, was even more shocked when they carried out tests on Ethan that showed that the computer games hadn't made him violent but had increased his fine motor skills and concentration! IIRC the games were rated 15!

alexsmum · 10/01/2006 23:12

it was the being left in the cot thing that shocked me the most. poor boy- it reminded me of the nspcc advert with the boy called miles?

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 23:14

I don't remember the cot thing but it sounds awful. Think the Mum had a few problems be interesting to see how they are doing now.

alexsmum · 10/01/2006 23:18

she used to put him to bed at 7 pm and then not let him get up until 10am (approx times) he would wake at about 7 am and she would leave him there until she was ready to get up.

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 23:24

That's awful, poor wee soul. Now that my DSs are a bit older I sometimes have a lie in on a Saturday and DS1 (7) fixes them both some breakfast (weatabix, nothing difficult or dangerous) but I can't imagine leaving a baby/toddler in a cot until I was ready to get up at 10am, that's terrible.

TwoIfBySea · 10/01/2006 23:31

Did the mum not have severe pnd or something? I remember last year she was jealous when Ethan went on a fishing trip with his dad.

I hope they don't over-feature the same children this time, there are two in particular where it is more the mother who gets the attention than the children.

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 23:45

I think she did have PND.

RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2006 10:49
