Happiness

Documentary series with Professor Robert Winston following the lives of 25 children born in 2000. In this programme, he asks the age old question are we born or are we made? Ethan has attention deficit disorder. Prematurely born Helena was lavished with attention and toys - but did her parents go too far? And Calvin's parents split up when he was a toddler, and he hasn't spent much time with his dad. Now he's to stay with him every other weekend.

yes I do

just hope it isn't all one sided and they show positives of only children

RTKangaMummy · 22/01/2006 20:14

poor charles

Hulababy · 22/01/2006 20:33

Really feeling for Charles. Mum and dad don't appear to do anything to calm the younger boy down at all.

RTKangaMummy · 22/01/2006 20:53

why don't they think of something for charles to be the best rather than just focusing on william being the best

he looked sooooooooo sad

Sorry but have just watched this and thought it was a load of rubbish. Totally meaningless (and needlessly over analytical) and of no help to anyone whether they have 1 child or 5. i used to quite like the programme

katzg · 22/01/2006 21:11

i really wanted to see the triplets too.

plus couldn't believe the little boy at the start of the show when asked about his sister who said she p!$$e$ me off

I know, Katzg but didn't catch which one it was. for James, he sounded so stressed and mixed up about what happened with mum's ex-bf and if he was to blame. Hadn't expected Het's parents to have another though.

Earlybird · 22/01/2006 21:18

Think it was a bit of a dud program, as usually they are much more thought provoking/enlightening and less obvious.

Also, why show the psychologist guessing birth order of adults at the end when she got it wrong mostly? The fact that they still showed it made me think the producers struggled to make an entire show out of this topic.

LIZS · 22/01/2006 21:23

Agree Eb would have been more interesting to hear how parents felt their relationships had affected the parenting of their children. I wonder if long term they could undertake snap shop experiments, like the drawing of sibling relationships in the circles, repeating them to compare them a few years later. The issue fo sibling rivalry isn't age specific unlike other milestone based thems. Starting to wonder how they will be able to sustain these programmes long term by theming them unlike 7-up series which is more striclty biographical.

ponygirl · 22/01/2006 21:25

Missed it! Aaaargh! Does anyone knoe if it's repeated at all?

RTKangaMummy · 22/01/2006 21:33

no not repeated in near future

OP posts:
Hulababy · 22/01/2006 21:33

Definitely thought it could be better. Didn't give any real insights at all did it?

ponygirl · 22/01/2006 21:36

Oh BUM RTKM! I was taping it for a friend abroad. Can't believe I failed!

notasheep · 22/01/2006 22:11

Have been following this since 2000,well what a load of toilet it was this evening.

Wonder how much the psychologist was paid!

Blu · 23/01/2006 13:52

I completely agree with Earlybird - this was the sloppiest of these programmes that i have seen so far.
Full of outrgaeous contradictions: Het is like she is because she is an only child (tho' cynic Blu was thinking 'clueless mother'...), and the next minute, it's all actually to do with personality, AND the psych can't tell who is in what sibling order.

And the experiment they did with leaving them alone with 2 actresses 'arguing' - how could that have been in any way revealing? The main issues for Carol and the one who had been abducted by his Dad were presumably violence, separation, etc, and how two people having a slightly tetchy discussion would not unsettle thm as much as ones who weren't used to arguing?

I was very disappointed with this episode.

Feel quite glad I missed this as I usually like it

Isthisme · 23/01/2006 18:30

Erm....cod, are you p*ed.
I agree, with the general consensus here, not up to the usual standard of the program at all.

TwoIfBySea · 23/01/2006 21:48

Well I enjoyed it for the simple fact it followed up on Alex and Ivo!

It is about the only time I get to hear twin related things and found the whole one twin more reliant on the other fascinating. And, as of this morning, I can know for sure which one of my dts is more dependent on his brother.

bundy · 23/01/2006 22:12

i especially hated the bit where william's dad was so excited by a 5 yr old being able to race his bicycle as fast as him...leaving the poor older brother behind...god, I hate competitiveness

Joanie · 25/01/2006 14:17

Oh thought about watching this, but glad i missed it now!
Used to be required viewing, but there seems to be less to report on as they get older as the changes are less dramtic each year. Most interesting thing is just seeing how they grow up and them and their families change. Is anyone else getting really annoyed with the pseudo-science on this programme? Saw week before where they showed picture os happy children and pictures of unhappy ones with toys,if the experimented kids prefered the unhappy ones over the happy ones this 'showed' they were materialistic! Hope no-one takes his grand sweeping statements too seriously.

RTKangaMummy · 29/01/2006 17:22

Part 3 tonight

FairyMum · 29/01/2006 17:30

Oh yes, agree it is pseudo-science Joanie.

jane313 · 29/01/2006 20:17

Is anyone watching? Is Charlies mother the teenage on who had gone back to university to train to be a teacher?
