Soooooooooooooo I still reckon Cora to kick the bucket, shuffle of this mortal coil, sing with the choir eternal etc etc

I bet Jane is handy with a shorehorn for Lord 6, he's been out of action for a while so may need some help.

OP posts:

I thought Mary was only engaged to Patrick out of duty do eldest daughter would keep Downton. When he died she didn't feel anything and was relieved.

It was Edith who was upset as she had loved him. Wasn't that the root of the Mary v Edith animosity? That Edith didn't think Mary deserved him?

diddl · 01/11/2011 08:20

Yes I think so.

That & Mary showing no interest in Lord Strallan until he showed an interest in Edith.

And Mary´s superior attitude to Edith.

josephinebonaparte · 01/11/2011 08:20

In todays world Jane would have a super injunction slapped on her Wink

diddl · 01/11/2011 08:37

How about Lavinia discovers that M&M are in love so calls off her wedding to Matthew.

Matthew proposes to Mary -& then she tells him about Sir R´s threat re if she doesn´t marry him.

So-Matthew decides not to marry her & risk her reputation (such as it is)

ThePsychicSatsuma · 01/11/2011 09:24

I do find it slightly odd thomas trashed his whole stock, why not try and flog it bit by bit out of town, to individuals? the whole enterprise, the whole of his savings were hanging on mrs patmore agreeing to buy stuff ?
what would he actually have done if she'd said no? His level of cunning and planning in other eps. suggests he wouldve thought this all through in much more detail

ThePsychicSatsuma · 01/11/2011 09:26

also interesting that sybil has quashed her burgeoning feminism;
it was square old mary suggesting getting her hair cut like a boy

brilliant scene where Matthew is the first of the males present to dissent. Grin
genius, he cares more passionately than her father and her fiance

ThePsychicSatsuma · 01/11/2011 09:27

I like that, Diddl
then Mary sods off to Paris
Becomes a can-can girl

ThePsychicSatsuma · 01/11/2011 09:29

if thwarted, do you think pickle would snatch Sybil? or threaten to kill himself if she doesn't marry him?
off the roof of the Abbey or something?

ThePsychicSatsuma · 01/11/2011 09:30

Obviously JF wants Thomas desperate and dangerous for some reason...

SO, will it come to some kind of denouement where O'Brien has to betray him to save the house/family/send him to jail?

MarthasHarbour · 01/11/2011 09:58

just caught up last night (had to hide this thread yesterday Confused )

although Mary was a bitch last night (to most of the family) it was good to see her back to her Series 1 self.

Another classic Isobel/Matthew Mother/Son clip - when they were all gathered after he had stood up, she was sitting next to him, looking at him with such pride in her eyes, then she grabbed him (just like we said last week) and said 'my boooooyyyyy' i had tears in my eyes!! Blush

Ethels baby - well yes the baby is now an appropriate size for the time span BUT last week which was a good 8 or so months earlier the baby was the same size/age Confused Confused

My classic moment of the episode - when Violet was in Matthew's room and she said that he could marry Mary now that he could walk - only to be topped off with her declaring how 'overjoyed she is that he can live a fulfilling married life' or something

basically saying that she is chuffed to bits he can now get his end away! hurrah for Matthew's cock! Grin

diddl · 01/11/2011 10:05

Yes, the Violet/Matthew thing.

Although he didn´t say he loved Lavinia, he did sound quite proud/impressed by her I thought.

And tbh, if Mary is sooo in love, why not say something when he first returned with Lavinia?

He is still engaged, & for that matter, Mary is now as well.

Not sure Violet really sold it with the "you loved her once, you can do again"

I though the Matthew/Isobel thing was great "oh my darling boy"-made me a bit tearful.

diddl · 01/11/2011 10:14

MarthasHarbour · 01/11/2011 10:22
LadyHarrietDeSpook · 01/11/2011 10:25

To be frank, there's still room for wild speculation.

Georgimama · 01/11/2011 10:25

it appears from youtube that there are people mad enough to have spliced together fan made homages to pickle and sybil. loons. yy to wife beater and most likely to found ira cell. actually that would be good way to get rid of him in series 3, he can get shot by british army.

Georgimama · 01/11/2011 10:27

mary's not going to say anything to matthew - sir r has her over a barrel. would matthew reject her if he knew about pamuk? i think he would.

diddl · 01/11/2011 10:29

Lavinia dies, Matthew blames himself for some reason & won´t marry Mary?

LadyHarrietDeSpook · 01/11/2011 10:29

Georgi - think we should amass a 'script writing team' from this thread to pull together a stonking great alternative XMAS panto.

LadyHarrietDeSpook · 01/11/2011 10:29

Diddl- shush.

Georgimama · 01/11/2011 10:33

lavvy poo is going to die, sir r will see mary is going to slip the hook but he won't print her story, just tell matthew. if her hedging when her mother got upduffed was enough to make him dump her and go off in a strop for two whole years, knowing she shagged the turk will send him postal.

or m & m do marry but sir r uses the threat of telling m to force mary to be his mistress......
