When this comes around to UK tv... if you are thinking of watching it, I just want to say...

DON'T

this sounds like a bad idea, it really does.

though it worked on buffy.

Pinkjenny · 01/04/2011 13:45

I try to avoid spoilers, but I had seen something about this. Seems so odd, Greys is generally quite dark, so to burst into song seems, well, weird.

I understand that Sara Ramirez and Chandra Wilson are amazing singers though?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 03/04/2011 13:12

The Buffy one was excellent, and I read that Shondaaaaaaa was inspired by that one to make the Grey's episode.

Sara Ramirez is brilliant. And totally fricking wasted on GA. Patrick Dempsey reportedly refused to sing as he thought the whole idea was silly.

I have to say, they do it in a good way, if they have to do it at all - the concept is good, but it just doesn't work.

Shock noooooooooo!!!

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/04/2011 13:21

I think it sounds like an awful idea. Mind you I used to love GA but I think it has gone right off track this series.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 03/04/2011 13:31

It has, nutcracker. Though, I do think it has been starting to get back on track now that Cristina is back on form.

Oh my god really?!?! sounds awful! Just reminds me of the singing Scrubs episode!

iPhoneDrone · 03/04/2011 21:01

Oh god no.

PureNewWoolWithPerfectStitches · 03/04/2011 21:08

How on earth is that going to work?
The Buffy one was excellent but buffy also had an element of comedy (same as scrubs). Grey's is not funny. I love it (dh gave up on it years ago, too much angst) but musical Greys....NOOOOoooo. It's wrong. Wrong.

beachholiday · 03/04/2011 21:35

I am soooo looking forward to this. I plan to have glass of wine in hand and laugh at it. A lot. Then I will be glad when they resume normal programming the following week. Its coming this week on Irish TV btw.

I also love the way Shonda is insisting this is not "just" a musical episode though, there is a real reason why they are singing.

I have a feeling that he musical devils in Buffy will be turn out to be more realistic than Shonda's real reason.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 03/04/2011 22:35

I couldn't help but burst out laughing every time someone burst into song.

I liked buffy because they chose appropriate songs to the episode, ones that meant something. It was so well done.

What they have done here is have songs where there would normally be a soundtrack, iyswim? So I think that in theory, it's not a bad idea. But it's so distracting. And while they have chosen songs that have always been linked to GA (ie, turgid, boring, overplayed shit), they aren't in any way relevant to anything. Unless you were at a Snow Patrol concert, then they would be relevant. But you aren't. You're in an operating room. Singing badly.

Shonda is a nobber.

^^ I am really going to enjoy the laughing. It sounds like a crossover with Glee. Buffy is the only one I know of that has managed it well. I look forward to the inevitable Desperate Housewives musical now.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 03/04/2011 22:45

OMFG imagine. Can you see Bree?

Niceguy2 · 03/04/2011 22:50

The Buffy one was awesome and without a doubt my favourite Buffy episode ever!

Despite being a BIG grey's fan, I thought it really sucked. It totally did not suit the show, the storyline was already awesome without the music and having the singing just ruined it IMO.

Agree with Pfft. What's the point in singing songs which have nothing to do with whats going on???

chocolategal · 04/04/2011 13:42

I liked the musical episode. Wouldn't want it to be a regular thing however!

I think Greys is missing something this season though.

Shonda has previously said that she wouldn't break up merder but has tweeted recently saying this may change!?

I think Private Practice has become a bit tired too?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/04/2011 14:13

Private Practice is awful, I think. Addison is the only decent character, and they could solve that problem by just bringing her back to Greys. So many of them are hateful, particularly Violet and Charlotte. The men are drippy and useless. Urgh.

Greys is deffo off its game - I don't think its been the same since they made the colossal Izzy/Denny mess up. I think that they are making a mistake if they think that the way to spice things up is to break up Mer/Der. They could do with sorting out some of the bad characters (I'm looking at you, Teddy) and bad relationships (Callie/Arizona) rather than mess up what is good.

OP posts:
chocolategal · 04/04/2011 14:28

So true pfft!

I think they are repeating storylines in greys a bit. The Teddy story with her I'll 'husband' reminds me of izzy/Denny.

I love sloane & Lexi though and hope that they get back together.
I am hoping Addison and Naomi come to Greys to help Meredeth get pregnant.

I download private practice & find myself fast forwarding through most of it!!

Have you seen any of Shonda's new one, Off the Map?

Niceguy2 · 04/04/2011 15:54

Private Practice is the pits. I stopped watching that about halfway thru the second season.

I do still love Greys though but the whole MerDer thing is a bit pointless now. Some of the junior characters need spicing up. Just what is the point of little Grey & the one who's still a virgin?

But the scripts are still excellent.

Oh and I just don't see what Hunt sees in Yang? Teddy is way fitter and sane too!

Ditto with Eli & Bailey?? It just doesn't seem to "fit".

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/04/2011 15:58

Ah see, I don't see what Yang sees in Hunt Grin She's talented and awesome, he's miserable and dangerous. Teddy has a face longer than a wet weekend. I do wish Yang and Hunt had not got married though.

Haven't seen any of Off The Map. I've read about it, but I don't think I can take any more Shonda.

I heard (might be a lot of rubbish!!) that avery is a l

chocolategal · 04/04/2011 17:09

Ooops!

That was going to say that Avery is a love child of the chief & meredeth's mum , making him & mer half brother/sister!?

LaurieFairyCake · 04/04/2011 17:13

I liked the musical episode, cried a lot. I think it was just supposed to represent everything that was going on in her mind because of the injury.

Very surprised at how well they could all sing.

CelebratedMonkey · 04/04/2011 17:14

Musical ep was weird for me. Loved the singing and the acting generally was very good. But the two did not mix! It was such a serious episode that it really didn't suit being a musical as well. SR's rendition of the Story was amazing, though.

I love love love Yang. She's probably my favourite. Or Alex. But I hated her weird flipout plotline. She's best when she's brilliant.

I also really care about Meredith. I love that she's dark and spiky (if perhaps less so nowadays) and her relationship with Christina.

I'll never care about the other characters as much as the three original interns that are left (Mer, Christina, Alex), though I do have a big soft spot for Bailey and like Derek as a foil for Meredith.

It's been a very mixed year though better than some dire seasons when all the George/Izzy drama was going on.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/04/2011 17:15

I think avery is very tasty. He's a bit young though, shouldnt really drool.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/04/2011 17:39

chocolate, I heard that rumour too! Not sure how it would work with the whole Lexie/Avery thing though. [barf]

Never mind, I'll have him Grin

Monkey, I think ALL Izzy stuff was dire - they wrote terribly for her and Heigl is an awful actor. I also love Yang - I loved that moment with Avery when she was pretending to cry Grin
