boycotting the EE episode next tuesday

OracleInaCoracle · 04/01/2011 20:08

there was talk on the original thread of staging a boycott of eastenders next tuesday for the funeral. the thinking was that a well organised, publicised boycott would show EE how far of the mark the baby swap storyline is/was. if they wont listen to complaints from the people who pay for the bbc, maybe they will listen to a ratings drop.

Bumping this!!! If you are on Facebook please join the group!!

wannaBe · 05/01/2011 07:48

The storyline was discussed in brief on daybreak this morning.

I sent this to Lorraine Kelly, Philip schofield, loose women, this morning, asked them to retweet but as yet none have. Someone on my twitter sent it to Victoria Derbyshire but all she got back was "thank you."

It is beginning to become apparent that no one high profile wants to speak out against this.

OracleInaCoracle · 05/01/2011 09:37

have added the link onto the wall of heart FM.

wannabe, looks like it doesnt it? Sad

I will be boycotting episode too, but can't seem to copy and paste list whilst on phone. The story was mentioned briefly on This morning.

Hate the storyline. Have refused to watch any of it. Think it is ridiculous to portray bereaved parent in this way. Not watched any of it since getting home and don't intend to.

travellingwilbury · 05/01/2011 12:59

Count me in , have already linked on my fb page .

FooffyShmoofer · 05/01/2011 14:21

Have joined and invited friends list.

Punkatheart · 05/01/2011 14:26

Sadly, for every person who turns off, five more will watch it just to see what the fuss is about. All publicity is good publicity, particularly in television.

I too am sick of grieving people being depicted as mad. Just to quietly ignore it is my intended aim.

wannaBe · 05/01/2011 14:42

that is what my dh said - that people will tune in to see what the fuss is about.

How many people are on the fb group - just the twenty or so listed here?

I'm afraid to say that it's beginning to look as if this really won't take off - it's impossible to get anyone of note to publicise it, and without a signifficant number of people pledging to boycott the episode it really does just look like a handful of people which makes the opposite statement tbh.

deemented · 05/01/2011 14:46

No, theres nearly 400 on the FB group.

pawsnclaws · 05/01/2011 15:11

As the mum to a stillborn son, count me in - not just next Tuesday but from now on full stop. To portray a cot death in an effort to raise awareness, yes fine. To use it as part of a frankly ludicrous and insulting babyswap storyline portraying a grieving mum as a baby thief - no.

LittleMissHissyFit · 05/01/2011 23:16

Lissie,
Just got the message that the FB page is being deleted and that you have had abusive messages?

WTF?

Why on earth would someone do that? I don't understand?

What were the messages saying? From what it appears you are doing, to raise awareness that using the death of a baby is fine but not in a bizarre plot twist which is why is not acceptable.

OK so I don't watch EE, gave it up in 2006 because it is just dismal, but I do disapprove of the use of such subjects being used in such sensationalist manners for ratings.

LittleMissHissyFit · 05/01/2011 23:17

FWIW, open up a new twitter account and get everyone to RT the boycott, then bin the account...

Twitter is more expansive and immediate than FB

griphook · 06/01/2011 01:39

couldn't find the fb page but will be boycotting, the whole thing is just so wrong, have not watched since christmas day

MmeLindt · 06/01/2011 06:12

Lissie
I have received a message saying that the FB event has been cancelled due to the fact that there were abusive messages.

I am really sorry to hear that and hope you are ok.

SecretSlattern · 06/01/2011 07:49

Same here Lissie.

Hope you are ok and will be joining the boycott on Tuesday. How awful that you have been getting grief Sad for making a stand

lottiejenkins · 06/01/2011 07:59

interview here

AlistairSim · 06/01/2011 08:03

I don't watch EE but fully support your campaign.

essenceofSES · 06/01/2011 10:06

Lissie - I am so sorry you received abusive messages. Outrageous!

The boycott still has my support and I am no longer watching at all. Partly in protest, partly because of the inaccurate portrayal/poor writing and partly because it is too cruel a subject matter to be watching.

I am fortunate to never have been directly affected by SIDS but I am amazed at the strength and bravery of those who have.

Lottie - well done on getting your interview. I'm sorry not to have read your link yet as I'm rushing off to work but I will.

Thought also you may be interested to know there was mention on the radio this morning that apparently when Sam Womack first read the script she wrote a letter of resignation as she thought it was badly done and there would be a backlash. Producers obviously persuaded her otherwise.

I also saw Anne Diamond on Daybreak explaining why the storyline is offensive. Just a shame the ratings are currently telling a different story.

Sorry for mammoth post...off to work!
