boycotting the EE episode next tuesday

there was talk on the original thread of staging a boycott of eastenders next tuesday for the funeral. the thinking was that a well organised, publicised boycott would show EE how far of the mark the baby swap storyline is/was. if they wont listen to complaints from the people who pay for the bbc, maybe they will listen to a ratings drop.

...but she has now resigned and will leave in May. Even the actress didn't like the storyline!

bandgeek · 06/01/2011 10:16

I don't watch EE either but fully support the campaign too. Sorry to hear you've been receiving vile messages Lissie Sad

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2011 10:43

thanks all so miuch, it was pretty vile tbh. was called some horrible names and told to watch my back Hmm however, will still be boycotting and we ended up with 700 members in just over 24hrs, im so pleased that so many people will stand up and say "enough's enough! we refuse to be manipulated and some things just arent entertaining"

Lissie, I also got the message about the cancellation. I just can't understand why anyone would be like that over this. I hope you reported them to facebook? Who were they? Weirdos.

Anyway, the word is out as it is and many people are up in arms. Well done for the wok you have done. :)

LittleMissHissyFit · 06/01/2011 12:21

Am I being incredibly thick? Why would someone saying to boycott a TV programme be being issued threats of physical harm? I just don't see why suggesting to people to not watch a soap, because of a really tasteless and sick storyline would attract 'Watch your Back'

What kind of people would DO that?

I am not doubting you at all Lissie, I just can't fathom why someone would say that to you?

Are the BBC that scared of a ratings plummet?

LittleMissHissyFit · 06/01/2011 12:21

Lissie, go for Twitter.

Punkatheart · 06/01/2011 12:27

What horrible people there are in the world. Probably, as often in the case of the Internet, people with matchbox intellects - who in real life do not make a ripple. They use the Internet to get a kick, a foothold in the world. So sorry that you had to suffer abuse for simply sticking to your principles. Glad too that the actress Samantha Janus has also been so principled to leave the soap. It doesn't make the BBC look very good employers really - smacks of bullying....

I had a meeting at the BBC some time ago for some possible writing work and it would seem that most people there look down on Eastenders as commercial exploitative rubbish. But it has hurt a lot of poor mums, brought up some unpleasant feelings. I really feel for those mothers.

What kind of people would DO that?" The kind of people that watch eastenders. Sorry, I realise that there are people here that love it but surely anyone who is still watching after this has questionable inteligence.

As for twitter, tbh it's very quiet - I tried for two days to get lots of people to get involved, lorraine kelly/this morning/philip schofield/loose women etc, and the reality is that while many think it's a fairly stupid storyline, no-one is interesting in publicising their distaste. And given the abuse lissi received over the fb group I can sort of understand why.

deemented · 06/01/2011 13:23

Well, TBH i had abuse as well and i was only a mod. One helpful 'gent' tole me it was probably my fault that my baby had died... Hmm

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 06/01/2011 13:52

WHAT Dee? Please tell me you reported him. That's awful.

I'm not even really involved other than joining the group and a status update, but I've had 'helpful' comments from my brother indicating that I might need (more) psychological help, that it isn't healthy to care...

Twats. Anyway, lots of people do care.

deemented · 06/01/2011 13:56

I did indeed.

I think it's a testament though, to Lissie, that she managed to get roughly 700 members in jjust over 24 hours. Shows that people actually do care.

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 06/01/2011 14:00

By the way, I'm assuming others have posted this somewhere already, but MN gets a mention here.

Mouseface · 06/01/2011 14:08

Good on you Lissie. 700+ is brilliant.

Sorry for those who got abuse by voicing their concerns over the programme. With good cause to!

MsFox · 06/01/2011 14:09

wannaBe Philip Scholfield made echoed the points made on here today on This Morning, so maybe it did get through?

MsFox · 06/01/2011 14:10
  • made
wannaBe · 06/01/2011 14:13

he did but he was very clear to cover his back by constantly back-tracking "well it's been said, and obviously we don't know/can't say/it's all opinion..." he never voiced an actual opinion of his own...

Punkatheart · 06/01/2011 14:23

...he wouldn't be allowed to, for contractual reasons. ITV has to show impartiality..

MsFox · 06/01/2011 15:36

aT LEAST HE SAID THOUGH, i SUPPOSE.

MsFox · 06/01/2011 15:36

Blush didn't mean to shout

EarthMotherImNot · 06/01/2011 15:41

Count me in! Not only will I not watch the episode I will NEVER watch it again!

Punkatheart · 06/01/2011 15:42

Yes, Ms Fox - really! Decorum on the forum! Wink

I suppose this is something to shout about though....in bad taste.

OracleInaCoracle · 06/01/2011 19:26

For anyone that's interested, I'm trying to see if we can actually do something positive and constructive around this.
