Any opinions?

It was ok. Not a patch on Downton sadly.

thenightsky · 26/12/2010 22:55

I liked it. But missed the bit about why the footman got taken away by the police.

megcleary · 26/12/2010 22:58

He hit a man in the pub who fell onto some glass and was remanded for wounding with intent.

What ??. . do you mean the series way back in the late '70's ?????

If so, BRILLIANT !!

teenyweenytadpole · 26/12/2010 23:07

I liked it, a bit frivolous, but good entertainment. DH hated it and spent the whole night slagging it off.

megcleary · 26/12/2010 23:08

The original series is amazing but BBc have three episode done for the next three days new family etc and i am not sure I like it.

I quite enjoyed it - I'll probably watch the next episode.
DD thought it wasn't as good as Downton Abbey.

I liked it.
But loved the original and have watched every episode countless times.
Think 3 parter not long enough really to set scene/introduce characters etc though.

Punkatheart · 26/12/2010 23:27

Upstairs, Downstairs - the original series - was so astonishing. Each episode was like a play in itself and the writing was deep, resonant and meaningful.

This was fluff.

donkeyderby · 26/12/2010 23:31

It was lame. Keeley Hawes isn't a patch on her DH - bring back Logan

HerBeatitude · 26/12/2010 23:34

Oh I loved it.

First episode is always a bit slow, building up characters etc.

Next week will be great - naughty sister getting involved with Mosely's bunch of fascists.

And they're repeating Downton Abbey at New Year's weekend.

Larvely.

GeorginaWorsley · 26/12/2010 23:38

Of course, with my name,I am obviously an Upstairs Downstairs fan! Grin

diddl · 27/12/2010 07:34

Pretty crap.

Eccentric interferring MILHmm

Spineless husbandHmm

Servants all watching as footman deliberately spilt drinks & no commotion made.

How come sister is titled but has no idea of how to behave with servants, but Keeley Hawes character does?

SkiingGardeningTwinklyBauble · 27/12/2010 07:48

Terrible, terrible writing. The dialogue just felt all wrong and out of period. It was certainly a let down for me compared with the original.

LIZS · 27/12/2010 08:03

I really enjoyed it once the pace picked up .

maltesers · 27/12/2010 08:52

Upstairs Downstairs is now one of my favourite series. . .they were so accurate in the script with all the details about the first world war.
Love Hudson, Mrs Bridges, Rose and best of all RUBY !!!!
"Where's that girl?" lol Grin

swanandduck · 27/12/2010 10:19

I enjoyed it even though it didn't really have an 'upstairs, downstairs' feel to it. But it is set in the mid 1930s so life had moved on, the social order was changing and servants weren't as easy to come by and expected to have lives of their own, not be eternally devoted to the family upstairs. I think they captured all of that really well.
Rose walking through the house for the first time in many years was quite nostalgic and I thought they would show fleeting bits and pieces of the original series as part of her memories. I think that would have been a nice link.

ppeatfruit · 27/12/2010 10:19

I liked last night's but i wish they had got a real cockney maid; really bad accent and we couldn't understand her. Diddl the reason german guest got drinks "accidentally' spilled was political.

diddl · 27/12/2010 14:57

Yes, I know.

What I meant was all the servants gawping around the door & no fuss-he just left!

Didn´t like the MIL character-found her idiculous & annoying.

oxocube · 27/12/2010 14:59

Are the original tv episodes on dvd or online does anyone know? I quite fancy watching this now!

oxocube · 27/12/2010 16:07

Ooh, just found them on YouTube Xmas Grin

diddl · 27/12/2010 16:10

Just seen a box set of all episodes-for nearly ?200Shock

BenHer · 27/12/2010 17:42

Not a bad start I thought.

oxocube · 27/12/2010 18:28

Eu 200? Shock Will stick to YouTube!! Have just watched the first 2 episodes. Strange, first was in colour and the other in black and white.

I used to love this as a kid. Was it Saturday or Dunday evenings on London Weekend Television? I can't remember which!!
