Any opinions?

Quite enjoyed it, more comedy than Downton, wouldn't put them in the same category. Thought Sir Hallam's accent stuck out like a sore thumb - nowhere near posh enough to be pals with the prince.

kerstina · 27/12/2010 18:58

I enjoyed it but not a patch on the original series.
I had been watching some of the repeats and it really is just as relevant as ever.
I thought they were remaking the series and think that would have been better. I don't like the main character as she is annoying i prefer the Mil she is funny !

5Foot5 · 27/12/2010 19:46

I loved the original so I watched the new one half expecting to be disappointed. While I don't think it has reached the stabdard we remember from the '70s version I still feel it was quite good for an opending episode and I did enjoy it and will be watching again.

I have all the originals somewhere on video and, while everyone remembers the best and famous episodes, there were a few real duds you know! Especially in the first series.

I didn't really watch more than a few minutes of Downton so I can't compare but I suspect it may be just unfortunate timing that Downton came out and scooped the interest for this sort of period drama just a few weeks before Upstairs Downstairs.

I was actually very moved wathcing Rose wandering around 165 Eaton Place because of course she was the last one to leave.

absolutmum · 27/12/2010 21:05

Nasty monkey, dragging it's arse across the table.

swanandduck · 27/12/2010 22:26

I was disappointed with tonight's episode. The upper classes were all presented as weak, selfish, spoilt brats and the working classes were saints. There was far more balance in the original series.

mummydarlingsausage · 27/12/2010 22:45

I have found it a bit of a let down. It's okay but not great like downton or any human heart which i enjoyed recently. I just don't warm to any of the characters yet. The house looks like a set as well and to me doesn't look real enough.

HerBeatitude · 27/12/2010 23:10

oh I don't know swanandduck, the baddie MIL advised champagne for the servants (noblesse oblige) and the spineless husband decreed that the dead maid's child would be looked after at Eaton Place (more noblesse oblige). So not all totally bad.

BitOfFun · 27/12/2010 23:15

So, was it at all plausible that the sister would be shagging the chauffeur? Somebody should have told Sybil from Downton. They could have attended Republican rallies and had hot sex afterwards.

FunnysInTheGarden · 27/12/2010 23:20

Loved it. Never saw the 70's version and was sobbing at Rachel being parted from her child and then dying.........

HerBeatitude · 27/12/2010 23:42

I didn't believe that for one moment BoF.

But it's such enjoyable hokum...

BitOfFun · 27/12/2010 23:46

Oh I enjoyed it too. I love the sets, the costumes and the glorious Keeley. I am disappointed that it will only be three episodes though. It is just the sort of toffy trash that I would love to inhale on a regular basis.

Oblomov · 28/12/2010 00:06

Lame.
But thats only becasue Downton Abbey was so fab.
And why is Keely Hawkes in everything? Is she some sort of golden girl anthea turner, all of a sudden ? I loved her with Gene Hunt, no actually its him I like, but now she's in everything. really irritating. I mean she's good, but she aint THAT good.

StoodAProleyCattleShed · 28/12/2010 00:10

Oh I'm enjoying it hugely. Anne Reid! I've loved Anne Reid ever since she did that thing where she shagged Daniel Craig.

BitOfFun · 28/12/2010 00:14

Downton was much better, definitely. But I still like this.

domesticslattern · 28/12/2010 00:27

Loved it! Surprised it is getting such a slating!

ivykaty44 · 28/12/2010 00:41

I park in that road sometimes Grin it was filmed in Leamington Spa

BitOfFun · 28/12/2010 00:44

Really? I used to live there when I was at university. Which street was it filmed on?

ivykaty44 · 28/12/2010 00:49

Claredon Square

oxocube · 28/12/2010 08:27

So out of the original series (those of us old enough to remember it!!), which episodes stand out as being really good drama?

diddl · 28/12/2010 09:08

The sister´s a bit annoying, isn´t she?

"I´m poor too"

Maybe, but you live in a bloody great house & have servants FFS.

So, is there going to besomething wrong with the baby?

Is the implication that Rachel died due to the shock of Lady Persil being a facist?

None of the characters are really likeable or interesting, are they?

kerstina · 28/12/2010 09:58

Thought there was a really good sense atmosphere in this episode the way the tension was mounting. Keeley Hawkes character was still as petulant.
I think the girl from the childrens home is a good actress what else has she been in ?

HerBeatitude · 28/12/2010 10:19

I'm beginning to like the old bat MIL. Blush

HerBeatitude · 28/12/2010 10:20

The sikh bloke is quite likeable too. And of course the blessed Rose.

llareggub · 28/12/2010 10:22

I thought it was great, although I like Downton more.

I think there are several people who will feel guilt over the maid's death; Sir Hallam because he demanded help and left her alone, Lady Percy because she was a blackshirt and Mr Amanjit for not saying that she was ill.

I think that there will be something wrong with the baby and Keeley will take the adoptee under her wing and introduce her to society.

jonicomelately · 28/12/2010 10:29

I thought it was OK which is disappointing as I wanted it to be brilliant.

The baddies aren't a patch on the Downton baddies and I don't thing the writing is as good. Some of the writing just doesn't make sense. It's a bit jumpy at times and I don't buy into a lot of it, such as Agnes wanting to send the orphaned girl back to Germany. She's not stupid and would know the consequences and she's pregnant and quite a nice person. There's no way she'd have said what she said last night.
There are no characters you're really rooting for. The two characters you could have really warmed to Rachel and Mr. Amanjit haven't been developed as they could have been.
