So great to see a real woman on TV. And one with a BRAIN!

marybeard · 03/05/2012 09:03

Thanks all! I WAS a bit surprised that S Brick should jump in (and yes I have wondered too if she is actually real)... I suppose that the good side of this is that most people even in the DM comment threads think it is just NOT ON.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 09:05

i think we can safely say that for the foreseeable future the DM will offer her an op-ed pretty much every time the subject of female beauty comes up.

i really hope this hasn't rattled your confidence, Prof. i would be swinging for these arseholes if i was your kid.

TunipTheVegemal · 03/05/2012 09:31

has anyone else seen ? Someone has written Mary a song

(awwww again!)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 03/05/2012 09:35

that's the voice i was supposed to get!

lazarusb · 03/05/2012 15:39

Well, I watched both the Hairy Bikers and Mary Beard. Neither of them for their appearances, more because of the interests I have and their wonderful, endearing personalities. However, I still think HB and Mary are attractive people and would be brilliant fun at a party Smile

ClodiaMetelli · 03/05/2012 15:51

Another Mary fan signing in. Am fascinated with all things Classics anyway, would love a chinwag with her over a glass of wine.

Have just ordered her book on Pompeii, i have no idea who A.A.Gill is but he sounds like a knob.

TunipTheVegemal · 03/05/2012 15:59

you will love Pompeii book Clodia, it's terrific.
Recommend the Roman triumphs one too - a little bit harder but very interesting.

ClodiaMetelli · 03/05/2012 16:21

Thanks Tunip it looks good.

daffodilly2 · 03/05/2012 18:42

Also enjoyed Mary's enthusiasm about her subject. Classical history is so interesting but could be dry - she enthuses us all. Loved her silky red coat, very pleasant looking woman but it is what she says that is more important. How sad, in celeb culture such trivia is discussed.

lazarusb · 03/05/2012 18:49

I have just told dh what SB said about Mary. He says he knows who he would rather spend an evening with.

CarnivorousPanda · 03/05/2012 20:20

Enjoyed the series, full of interest and fascinating facts presented with intelligence and such enthusiasm.

I find Brick and Gill rather pathetic actually.

GrendelsMum · 03/05/2012 21:55

Really interesting series - thanks, Mary! I look forward to buying your books (I have Pompeii and love it).

So many people on this thread have expressed an interest in Ancient Rome. For anyone who isn't aware of her work, I'd like to recommend the Falco novels of Lindsey Duncan, set in 1st century Rome. They're detective novels and as such a lightish read, but her research is meticulous and they give a real flavour of the place.

TunipTheVegemal · 05/05/2012 08:52

Lindsey Davis

tribpot · 05/05/2012 09:00

Yup, Davis - they are great, and do give that sense of the 'real' Rome - Helena Justina's absolute terror as the birth of her first child approached ...
