No, is that really you, Mary?

Thank you so much - DH and I watched it last night, and really enjoyed it. I love your Pompeii book. It's been re-read several times.

Are any of your other books as accessible to the general reader as 'Pompeii'? People I've asked have suggested that they're aimed at the specialist, so I haven't read any of your others. I also have Andrew Wallace-Hadrill (sp?)'s book on Pompeii, and very much enjoyed it. If you could recommend any other books on Roman culture and society, I'd be very grateful.

GrendelsMum · 17/12/2010 18:17

Ooh, could we have a web chat about Pompeii with Mary Beard? That would be ACE.

hattymattie · 17/12/2010 18:18

Monica - thanks for the BBC Scotland tip - will watch on digibox tonight.

InmyheadIminParis · 17/12/2010 18:37

marybeard good on you for posting. I hope you're lapping up the paise for the Pompeii programme - it's shaping up to be a fantastic series. And good for you for helping to redress the young women / middle-old aged men presenting 'rule' - it's had me shouting at the box for years.

Looking forward to ep. 2.

InmyheadIminParis · 17/12/2010 18:37

PS - were you always an NMer?

oxocube · 17/12/2010 18:38

I also caught the last half of this programme completely by chance and though it was fabulous. Thank you so much Prof Beard Grin

when you google marybeard a naked tony curtis turns up

liath · 17/12/2010 19:10

I really enjoyed the programme, hadn't realised it was the start of a series and not a one-off! Excellent Grin.

Fascinating subject matter and makes you think how many misconceptions we might have had about the Romans were it not for Pompeii & Heraclaneum (?sp). The programme also really bought home how many aspects of Roman life were not that dissimilar to nowadays. I suppose humans haven't really changed at all in the intervening time!

tinylion · 17/12/2010 19:53

I can't believe she's on here!

I have read and reread her book on Pompeii - and was very excited about the TV programme.

Marvellous programme - loved it, whilst DH was snoring, watched it with glass of wine, two inches away from TV (glasses broken, cat sat on them...)

Was fantastic Mary - really enjoyed it - hope you can create and present more series!

GreenButton · 17/12/2010 20:12

I'm a big fan. She's National Treasure material!

Heard her talking on Radio 4 - she was really great - and then read her blog stuff on The Times website before evil Rupert put up a pay wall.

WilfShelf · 17/12/2010 23:36

OH yes, we do need to know if you were on MN before...

And can you please do a webchat. Especially for all the academics on here struggling with jobs, kids, writing, and general nastiness and sexism in the academy wrapped up as, um, 'equality'...

Mytholmroyd · 18/12/2010 12:19

Can't agree more that its unecessary having young presenters of either sex just for looks who do not know their subject too well and I am very pleased Mary got to make whole series that was a proper documentary and not the endlessly repetitive programmes we seem to get now. I'm an archaeologist and usually (if I watch) end up shouting at the screen at the unfounded "interpretations" - like the recent "gladiator" programme Confused.

Still, have to admit there's nothing better than Michael Wood reading Old English ....Blush

marybeard · 18/12/2010 22:40

Hi... if you want a classic example of tv sexism, try A A Gill's review of the programme in todays/tomorrow's Sunday Times (sorry, cant give you a link because it is behind the paywall)...aaaagggghh

catsinthejinglebelfry · 18/12/2010 22:47

marybeard

What a fantastic programme - it's wonderful to be talking to you, also so glad there is a thread on here about this. Best thing on TV for years.

Thank you, I hope we can have a webchat with you.

and we all know that AA Gill is a (((fill in with your favourite description of AA Gill))

Irrelevant info: read Greats a million years ago but not taught by Mary Beard.

Eleison · 18/12/2010 22:52

How lovely that you are here Mary Beard. I saw a bit of the prog for the first time the other day and enjoyed it very much indeed. And was struck again by the thought of how much we lose thanks to the normal TV dictat of only having a small group of shallow-glam youngish women presenting. The only exception apart from your great programme is the sprinkling of wonderful female foreign correspondents on the news.

A. A. Gill. God. Haven't read his review but I can imagine how dismal he would be on the subject.

marybeard · 18/12/2010 23:00

Couldnt she have taken a bit of care with her appearance ... looks 16 from behind and 60 from the front....yeah

If only the guy knew that I HAD smartened myself up to invade people's living rooms.

BitOfFun · 18/12/2010 23:02

God, I am so embarrassing at any party I go to. Never invite me.

senua · 18/12/2010 23:04

That naughty twinkle in the eye was definitely from a 16 year old.Grin
Loved your shoes!

JaneS · 18/12/2010 23:05

Ah, but weren't you in Vogue one time? So we know what Mr. Gill can do with himself, don't we? Grin

catsinthejinglebelfry · 18/12/2010 23:05

he's just lazy then, recycling some rubbish from (guesses) Christa da Souza - column called 1660?

You're quite shocking - of course you should have tidied yourself up for nitwits like that. Not. You look great.

TurkeyMartini · 18/12/2010 23:08
Xmas Grin
BitOfFun · 18/12/2010 23:12
