Another fan here

Mary, if you're still around, is there another series in development?

NigellasGuest · 25/04/2012 13:56

I think Mary is going to be on Richard Bacon's show on Radio 5live shortly

MrsMigginslovespies · 25/04/2012 14:50

Just another wee fan here who loved last night's programme. I read history at university and the bits I found the most interesting were all the social ones, ie people's actual lives, what they smelt like, what they wore, ate, lived in etc etc. I thought Prof Beard was great and a refreshing change from all the crusty dull male historians who pop up from time to time. I'm expecting my first baby in August and can't wait for next week's episode on childbirth...! Wonder how much has changed!? ;)

PS, Prof Beard, pretty please do a webchat on here. T'would be fascinating!

LiviaAugusta · 25/04/2012 15:03

Yet another fan here! Haven't watched last night's programme yet as I'm waiting for an uninterrupted hour (hah!) to enjoy it, but last week's was fascinating. I love Mary's style, she's engaging and informative without it being dry, and the enthusiasm for her subject matter is infectious. The Pompeii programme was great too, and the times she's been on In Our Time she's been a refreshing change to some of the dusty academics that are usually on.

BinkyNic · 25/04/2012 15:16

Mary's just about to come on FiveLive and I've got to go and get dd1 from school... typical Sad

and it's raining!

itsnotjustaslap · 25/04/2012 15:34

marybeard whoop whoop!! So glad you're on here! I loved your programmes and absolutely adore the way that you present the past by making it exciting, accessable and that it is not dumbed down.

As for your critics; I really don't think you should give a damn: Re vera, cara mea, flocci non facio!

ps Thanks for putting Classics back to being cool; I lurved classics at uni and really regret not going further with it - honestly no job since uni has ever really compared to it - it's such a fascinating subject!!

BBQJuly · 25/04/2012 15:40

"absolutely adore the way that you present the past by making it exciting, accessable and that it is not dumbed down"

Hear hear! :) It's a fine balance, and you got it just right. Haven't been so interested in a history programme for a long time.

Loved the giant black diamond-shaped coat buttons too BTW!

veryconfusedatthemoment · 25/04/2012 16:30

Somebody pages ago mentioned an Academics thread - any idea where that might be hiding on Mumsnet!

I'm loving the episodes I have seen - just wish DS was old enought to watch!

GoPoldark · 25/04/2012 16:32

A A Gill is...

...clearly furiously jealous Grin

Takver · 25/04/2012 16:40

Sorry, I am about a million years behind the times ( Blush though I suppose in this context it is rather appropriate). Planning on watching the series on I-player & had thought dd might like it, but the note says 'adult content'. Can someone let me know whether its reasonably appropriate for a just 10 year old? :) Thanks!

Siddhartha · 25/04/2012 17:05

Mary! - You remind me so much of my English teacher. She was such an inspiration to me, able to liven up even the most dull prose or poetry (not that I find roman history dull, of course - I'm a Catullus fan!) Honestly, I think I love you a bit Blush

Your programme is fascinating and I love seeing you on my TV.

Moln · 25/04/2012 17:16

I'd never heard of Mary Beard before I saw her name in a (well this) thread title in the 'Telly Addicts' list and then a short while later happened to see a trailer for last nights episode.

I was then flicking through the channels last night as saw it again and saw her name again and decided to give it a go.

It. Was. Brilliant.

How have I missed this. WHAT have I missed!!!!

NewlySignedUpMemberOfTheMaryBeardFanClub might be my new user name!!

NewMemberOfTheMaryBeardFanClub · 25/04/2012 17:19

or maybe not

Too many letters.....

NoMoreInsomnia12 · 25/04/2012 17:21

AA Gill has probably done her a favour in a way, loads more people will now watch her show as she has trended on Twitter and been discussed here, among other places I'm sure. He is a twunt though.

GrendelsMum · 25/04/2012 17:35

Oh, I'm looking forward to having a spare night this week so I can sit down and really enjoy this.

NewMemberOfTheMaryBeardFanClub · 25/04/2012 18:08

Oh I read about AA Gill just.

He always was an abhorrent plebeian creature. I do like what she has to say about him

MousyMouse · 25/04/2012 18:20

takver I would say it's fine for a 10 year old. there is a lot of talk of farting and shitting, death and one picture of a sexual nature. but not too graphic.

CavemanDaveHasNeverBeenToWales · 25/04/2012 18:38

Wasn't it just brilliant last night. I would normally run a mile from a show like this, finding them oh so very dull but I had this on in the background last night whilst MN-ing and after a few minutes I was utterly absorbed. Mary Beard is bloody marvellous,

naughtymummy · 25/04/2012 18:45

Unfortunately I fell asleep during this last night. I sent ds8 to bed because it said it had adult themes. Do you think it is unsuitable for abright, inquistive and slightly science mad 8yo. BTw he has seen all of frozen planet and knows all about sex.

naughtymummy · 25/04/2012 18:49

Thanks mousey mouse. I will re-watch it with him tommorow (dh out on the lash)

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 25/04/2012 18:52

Another fan registering here Grin ooohhhh I just loved the latrine section! A fantastic, engaging presenter and great subject matter. Struck the right balance between entertainment and academia, I thought

(LOL @ poster further up thread who said only way AAGill could have sex was by go f* himself! Though I would happily insert Roman tombstone up his ass for good measure)

bialystockandbloom · 25/04/2012 18:56

It's a brilliant series.

Mary Beard is a colleague of my dad, and I've met her

BananaGio · 25/04/2012 19:24

really want to see this - has anyone else living outside the UK been able to find it anywhere online? I live in Rome with a ds who has started asking a multitude of questions about ancient Rome so I can no longer hide my embarrassing lack of knowledge Blush.

MarysBeard · 25/04/2012 19:24

I like her so much, I changed my nickname :)

ColinFirthsGirth · 25/04/2012 19:47

I am also a huge fan of Mary Beard. Last night's programme was so interesting. Doing Classics at A Level was was one of the best learning experiences of my life - such a fab subject!

Can't wait for the rest.
